We take great pleasure this year in dedicating LA PERITA to our fellow classmate, Darlene Giovannoni. Darlene, who was undoubtedly one of the best students of her class, was stricken with Infantile Paralysis at the beginning of her junior year and has been confined to her bed since then. During the long months she has shown unfailing courage, cheerfulness and a smile for everyone. Despite illness, pain and discouragement, Darlene has kept up with her studies and will graduate with her class. It is her dearest wish to participate in person in the graduating exercises and to receive her diploma with her fellow students. In this wish the entire Senior Class joins, for we feel that graduation would not be complete without Darlene. Dennis Noble, La Perita Business Manager, Jo Ann Wiedmann, La Perita Editorg jo Ann Gentner, La Perita Co-Editor. Edifo ia! Another fun-filled year has passed and though we, the Senior Class, will be leaving. there will always be a place in our hearts for good old C.H.S. We will never forget the fun we had at dances, games, and class activities. Upon leaving our school, we know that the next class will take our place, assume our responsibilities, and carry on the traditions of Courtland High, as will the classes in the years to come. The sole purpose of this book is to capture the many events that have happened this past year. It would be impossible to record all the little things that made this year such a climax for us, but we have tried to catch the highlights and the things that we think are of importance so that, in the years to come, we may look back and reminisce over the wonderful times we had during our high school days. Many laborious hours have been put into this annual, there were pictures to be taken, pages to be laid out, ads to be sold, and deadlines to be met. We have tried to be original in putting this book together and, like the staffs before us, we take great pride in pre- senting this book to you. Our only wish is that you will get as much enjoyment out of it as we have had in putting it together. If you do, its purpose has been attained. , m......i 1511 rd nf Zfrustees A, Members of the Board: Mr. Mark Sullivan, Clerk of Bates Grammar School Boardg Mr. Reuben Gentner, Mr. Donald McClain, Members of Bates Grammar School Boardg Mr. E. Hmm 4 J rr During this past year, you students have been privileged to, witness a -great national election. From the color of the convention, throughout the constantly increasing tempo ot' a spirited national campaign, to the day of the election inself with the solemn busi- ness of voting in the new or retaining the old, tremendous coverage by all the means of communication at our command kept you informed of the candidates, the issues and the parties. ' Many people in foreign lands cannot understand how we can reach such a high level of excitement in our campaigns up to and including election day, and still accept the verdict of the majority, roll up our sleeves, and all work together for the good 'of America. This, of course, is no surprise to us. This is the spirit of America. This is the intangible thing that has made democracy live. .All of our education trainstoward this end whether it be in the fields of scholastic proficiency or athletic endeavor. W'e'com- pete with all the resources about command-wwe try to win by all the fair and ethical means possible but, in losing, we respect and worlewith the victor. Let us hope that this spirit never dies in our great land. Let us rather hope that it extends itself to other lands, for in such an extension lies one great possibility for real, I...-AL... ...fn-l.1 ,-f...,',. Zzculfy MRS. Our ll ar ,flcfizfific When we reached our Senior year, we found ourselves in the midst of a great many activities. Our first big project was our Magazine Sale, which was a tremendous success. Obtaining 10096 participation from the class, we broke all past records, achieving a goal of 352,224.40 The high salesman was jo Ann Gentner, who received a small radio as an award. The Senior play was another success chalked up by our class. The play was well chosen and the cast gave a fine performance. As usual, our Senior Prom was most enjoyableg it was beautifully adorned with vivid and colorful decorations, And we mustn't forget to mention what a terrific time we all had on the Senior Ski Trip- throwing snowballs at our advisors! Unfortunately, all good things come to an end, just as we ourselves have come to the end of our cherished high school days. Yes, graduation has caught up with us. Reluctantly, We leave old Courtland High, having reached our goal as graduates. In closing, we stress the fact that all our school-day activities, big and little, are what helped to mold us into the strong class we are today. So now, as a small but mighty class of forty, we advance on our own into the future. in 1 ar L 'H- figfifx Smmr 611155 Ofhfers JO ANN GENTNER .....,...YY,,........,,, Serum' Repreyeufatzzfe ALICE SUEN .,...........,.,..,.. ,........,...A.,..........,,. The Sophomores entered C.U.H.S. this year with a more exuberant attitude towards their school life. This class, lead by a very capable group of officers, started their year's activities by receiving the Freshmen and making them feel at home. Then, very excitedly, they chose their class rings, which everybody liked. Next came their annual dance, with a very different scene, Under the Big Top. It was a great success and enjoyed by all. Robert Okamoto, Coach Goodridge. 6 Umm Due to the loss of many of our former Cs, our team this year was comgosed mostly of last years' D's and a few Freshmen. In spite of lack of experience an height, the team members fought valiantly. Top row: R. Okamoto, R. Malcolm, B. Burch, J. Sullivan, R. Batten. Bottom row: T. Maeda, D. Carr, D. Smith, B. Yabu. High- point-man Ralph Rose was backed by a very spirited Charger team which showed their opponents plenty of kick, Although Coach McVicker's boys lost a co-championship by a few games, it must he noted that these were lost by a very slim margin.
