Gussie Wise EVOII Amlflk Edifgy Business Manager GOLD NUGGETS If you were crossing the plains in a covered wagon in the year 1849, full of hope and confidence for the future, your most immediate concern would probably be that of making a living or setting up a business or assuming the responsibilities of a family. Your days of freedom and childhood would be on the brink of disappearing. In those days at the age of ten or twelve a child suddenly became an adult and was forced to accept the problems of adulthood. Today times have changed. During our years spent in high school we have a golden opportunity to add to our store of knowledge and to enrich our whole lives, if we wish to take advantage of the facilities. Now when we travel, it is usually for a vacation or special business. Few hardships await us. Ease, comfort, and recreation are all around us as we travel. We are not expected to reach adulthood until we have completed the teen years. Schooling is offered as a life-term opportunity with junior colleges, universities, night schools and special training schools ever- beckoning to those with ambition. While a first glance at the comparison between 1849 and 'I949 seems to swing the pendulum toward the earlier date, a closer scrutiny proves the fallacy of first glance. Sober reflection makes it readily apparent that we Modems have greater opportunities and wider horizons than our counterparts of a century ago.
