THE WORLD WE FACE The school year will soon be ended, and the Class of 1949 will take its place in our memories alongside of those other classes which have passed in review through the years. These students, assuming their new stature as high school graduates, will be facing a world vastly different from that of their immediate predecessors. It is undoubtedly a challenging world. Two vast economic systems glare at one another across the Earth. For the first time in many years highly paid employment is not readily available to anyone seeking it. Most of our boys have the prospect of at least one year's service in the armed forces. High profits, high wages and general boom conditions seem to be leveling off as most of our economists have insisted they would. Looked at purely on the negative side the picture may seem gloomy. On the brigher side, however, our graduates of this, and probably the next few ensuing years, have tremendous things to look forward to. New fields of endeavor, atomic energy, radionics, television, and plastics, to name only a few, have captivated the minds and imaginations of us all and hold out great promise for a brighter future. Once again ,as employment slackens, the man or woman who comes to a position or iob with know-how , initiative, resourcefulness, and dependability can count on an ever-increasing advantage in the labor' market. Industry, agriculture, the arts and the professions always have room for the really qualified practitioner. These conditions should bring home to you students the importance of grasping the maximum out of your present experiences, whether these experiences are in the high school or at a more advanced college or technical school or in the difficult but effective school of hard knocks . The opportunity is ever-present. Parents and taxpayers have provided the wherewithal. Your future depends upon the uses you make of these opportunities.
