Strict in having things done in the right way, fair in all of his dealings, understanding of the problems of youth, he has been a guiding light for many successful classes of the Courtland High School. The La Perita Staff with the help of other co-operative students have worked hard in order to cover the phases of your school life. We have divided the book into four sections which we hope will adequately cover your high school days. ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ACTIVITIES SPORTS Gussie Wise EVOII Amlflk Edifgy Business Manager GOLD NUGGETS If you were crossing the plains in a covered wagon in the year 1849, full of hope and confidence for the future, your most immediate concern would probably be that of making a living or setting up a business or assuming the responsibilities of a family. Your days of freedom and childhood would be on the brink of disappearing. In those days at the age of ten or twelve a child suddenly became an adult and was forced to accept the problems of adulthood. Today times have changed. During our years spent in high school we have a golden opportunity to add to our store of knowledge and to enrich our whole lives, if we wish to take advantage of the facilities. Now when we travel, it is usually for a vacation or special business. Few hardships await us. Ease, comfort, and recreation are all around us as we travel. We are not expected to reach adulthood until we have completed the teen years. Schooling is offered as a life-term opportunity with junior colleges, universities, night schools and special training schools ever- beckoning to those with ambition. While a first glance at the comparison between 1849 and 'I949 seems to swing the pendulum toward the earlier date, a closer scrutiny proves the fallacy of first glance. Sober reflection makes it readily apparent that we Modems have greater opportunities and wider horizons than our counterparts of a century ago. Aflminzsfrafxnn K 1 X., . THE WORLD WE FACE The school year will soon be ended, and the Class of 1949 will take its place in our memories alongside of those other classes which have passed in review through the years. These students, assuming their new stature as high school graduates, will be facing a world vastly different from that of their immediate predecessors. It is undoubtedly a challenging world. Two vast economic systems glare at one another across the Earth. For the first time in many years highly paid employment is not readily available to anyone seeking it. Most of our boys have the prospect of at least one year's service in the armed forces. High profits, high wages and general boom conditions seem to be leveling off as most of our economists have insisted they would. Looked at purely on the negative side the picture may seem gloomy. On the brigher side, however, our graduates of this, and probably the next few ensuing years, have tremendous things to look forward to. New fields of endeavor, atomic energy, radionics, television, and plastics, to name only a few, have captivated the minds and imaginations of us all and hold out great promise for a brighter future. Once again ,as employment slackens, the man or woman who comes to a position or iob with know-how , initiative, resourcefulness, and dependability can count on an ever-increasing advantage in the labor' market. Industry, agriculture, the arts and the professions always have room for the really qualified practitioner. These conditions should bring home to you students the importance of grasping the maximum out of your present experiences, whether these experiences are in the high school or at a more advanced college or technical school or in the difficult but effective school of hard knocks . The opportunity is ever-present. Parents and taxpayers have provided the wherewithal. Your future depends upon the uses you make of these opportunities. igflflulfg 2500 . 6,5 rf Q6 '6 964, N., 1 QV ga- Q f J: sung 0' ..,-, x9 9 e x-X Sf 'bo Cy GJ' KO Gb 60, Q4 Qf' 'V P51 STUDENT BODY OFFICERS Top row: Beverly La Guerra, Joe Gwerder. The annual initiation of the Freshies planned by the Sophs was held early in the fall on the ball field. The barn dance was held on March 25. A record crowd drank cider from the cow , danced by lantern light, sat on bales of straw, chose the longest beard and departed at mid- night broke from buying rattled cake, but happy and duly farmerized . Under the able supervision of Mr. Milton, Mr. Newman, and Miss Davis, a very co-operative group was organized. The officers include: Henry Lee Go, president, Helen Castanho, sec- retary, Reginald Jang, treasurer, Mary Ellen Leary, representative, and Bob Fukushima, pub- licity director. After a fairly rugged initiation the class was officially a member of the stuzlent body. March 31, 1949, the Courtland C.S.F. took a field trip. Early in the morning the fifty-one students clambered aboard a Courtland High bus and headed directly for Berkeley. When they arrived, a group of college students met them and showed them around the university grounds. As the campus is very large and spread out, it took the whole day to tour it. Late in the afternoon they again boarded the bus and returned home. FRESHMEN OFFICERS Top row: Bob Fukushima, Henry Lee Go, Lawrence Chee. Bottom row: Reggie Jang, Mary Ellen Leary, Helen Castanho. This organization encour- ages all boys to participate in various sports. Before a boy is recognized as a member of the Block C , he has to undergo a period of probation. But once a boy has become a member, he has the privilege of wearing a green sweater with gold stripes. Each stripe represents one year in the organ- ization. This year's lettermen were led by: Goro Kawamura, president, Meade Simpson, vice-president, and Eddie Giovonnoni, secretary-treasurer. BLOCK C OFFICERS Cum li.iwnmurn, lfddic Gimwrnmmi. Writing features, editorials, :l news articles along with 'recting, interviewing, mak- I illustrations, and planning 'outs were all part of the wrnalism students' jobs. With ch new issue came a differ- t editor, chosen by Mr. salernos. This was done ll that each member of the staff ld have chance to demonstrate his ta ents. Goro wamura, the permanent artist, drew the :tures on the covers and the cartoons. Typing the typists of the iournalism class with the le assistance of Miss Davis gave the finishing :ch to the well-organized class. lil ri l MUSIC Under the capable supervision of Mr. John Newman the music department this year reached new highs. lt would be indeed difficult to list all the achievements for there were so many activities in this department. There was a continuation of the dance band which had been organized the year before. A Valentine Dance and also a St. Patrick's Dance were presented by the dance band. ln addition the band was featured in the Variety Show and the Band Show. This year the outstanding students in the music field were Bob Fukushima, Loren Harter, Crystal Peterson, Harold Charamuga, Henry Andruccetti, and Joyce Lee. Bob did an excellent job playing the clarinet and saxophone. Crystal played the French horn very capably. Both Henry Andruccetti and Harold Charamuga showed real skill on the baritone horn. Joyce Lee not only excelled in voice, but also played the tympani and piano. Loren Harter performed extremely well with his saxophone. It is also fitting to mention that Joyce Lee and Bill Riddle handled the dance band vocals in a professional manner. Joyce and Bill were spotlighted for their fine Boogie work on the piano and string bass. Some of the highlights on the band's program include the Christmas Concert, San Jose Music Festival, Parents' Night Concert, and Second Annual Band Festival. S 'ii Swv- v I 0 AX! Scnio ' all Snow Valley Inn was the theme chosen by the Seniors for their Ball. Snow lined the walls with Christmas trees decked in snow and sparkling tinsel. A ceiling of cool blue and white paper hung from corner poles colorfully wrapped. The stage was made to represent a snow lodge. Music was provided by Dick James and his orchestra. Refreshments were served and every- one danced until 1:00 A.M. The Seniors were very industrious in pre- paring their dance. Mr. Morrell and his shop class did more than their share in supporting the Seniors along with the co-operation of two wonderful advisors, Miss Cubicciotti and Mr. Desalernos. The Seniors' thanks and appreciation go to all. Ito The Courtland Football Team under the capable leadership of Mr. John Desalernos and Mr. Ray Milton, had one of its best seasons in a number of years. Though outweighed by every team they played, they were never out-played. In league competition, Courtland defeated Galt 20-14 in a rugged hard fought game. The Folsom game gave every member of the squad an opportunity to play as the score was kept down to 28-0. El Dorado eked out a 14-13 win. The score at half time was 14-0. The second half found the Chargers roaring back to score 13 points. In this game the entire line played a good hard-charging game. Aki Fukushima was the sparkplug for the backfield. Goro Kawamura had a field day from the QB spot. The Elk Grove game was another hard-fought game with our opponents winning a game that should have been Courtland's. The Charger led at half-time 14-0 largely through the efforts of Fukushima, Kawamura, Uyeno, and Kinoshita in the backfield. In the line the midget guards A. Ohara and Hamatani turned in a good game. Tom Brown and Shig Ohara turned in a great defensive game up to the time they were removed because of iniuries. This was the beginning of our downfall with the team falling apart. The final score was 21-14. Courtland 13 El Dorado 14 Courtland 20 Galt 14 Courtland 28 Folsom 13 Courtland 14 Elk Grove 21 7, A-L Q,-o... .V - Y X S 1,9 A ff f 7 ,ff ff f' yf 5 C ij!
