With a great deal of pleasure we turned to the first of these-the Freshman Initiation. After introducing the freshman properly to our school traditions and student body we treated them to refreshments as a reward for being good sports. Our class generously supported the Iunior Bed Cross contributing more than any other registration class. Now we are looking forward to using our artistic abilities in decorating the auditorium for the graduating seniors. On the honor roll appear the names of many members of our class and in athletics, several of our boys represent us in football, basketball, and baseball. STUDENT BODY NOTES We consider this a very happy and successful term in our Courtland High School Student Association. The students have proved, by their cooperation at our meetings, the desire to keep Courtland a pleasant place to be. The accomplishments of the officers and members have been many. At the monthly meetings entertain- ments have been successfully staged under the direc- tion of Elena Cortopassi and a committee of students and faculty. The student body gave sweaters to La Verne Cunha and Ardell Goodman, our yell leaders, and lack Edinger, our athletic manager. Final approval was given by the student body to grant sweaters to the boys on the C basketball team. Carrying on Christmas season customs at Courtland, a Christmas tree adorned the main hall at the school. The elected officers for this year are: Elena Corto- passi, president Alvin Ostman, vice-president, Louis Furushiro, secretary, Laura I-ling, treasurer, lack Howard, collector. O . E rto assi Alvin Ostman Louis Furushiro Laura l-ling lack, Howard l Any old business to bring up today? Any. new business? r i Entertaining plays: Suppressed Desires and Thursday Evening. Clever dancers: Lillian and Ardell. An interesting Armistice Day program. STUDENT BODY ENTERTAINMENT Quiet please, the show is going on. Up comes the curtain and the action begins! This year short programs were introduced in student body. They have fulfilled a double purpose of adding interest to meetings and giving the students an opportunity to use their talent and hobbies. Each month a committee of two people under the guidance of a teacher, scouted around for entertaining talent among the students. We have had tap dances, Chinese and lapanese native dances, singers, community singing, one- act plays, instrumentalists, games, and speakers. We Want to thank these students for their time and effort in giving us inter- esting assemblies. Nice sharp razor, Smart little irosh, Put the two together Outcomes the starch. THE SENIOR PLAY Bright lights, make-up, nervous actors, commotion, and last minute preparation. A typical scene on the night of the senior play, Lady of Letters. This play is a comedy based on a college group. The wife of a professor, longing for popularity, publishes in her own name a book that was written by a poor author. It becomes a best seller and accordingly she becomes the dar- ling of the college. The authorities are forced to support this deceit to save their own faces. Complications of a very amusing sort are started, making for much laugh provoking comedy. FOOTBALL lt is said that every dark cloud has a silver lining and if this is true, then this year's football season wasn't so disastrous as the scores would lead one to believe. Build for the future was Coach Quinn's motto and how well the foundation was laid for our 1937 Varsity can be guessed at by glancing over the list of returning players. Only one regular and two substitutes will be missing from last year's squad of twenty-six. Sam Tsuruta, fullback, lchiro Arimoto, substitute halfback, and Kenneth Buckley, substitute tackle will be missed, but their understudies should be able to fill the vacancies in a satisfactory manner. Although our Varsity team did not make an outstanding show- ing during the past season, they did, however, show enough class to make them serious contenders for next year's championship crown. Since our coach chose to play boys who were either freshmen, sopho- mores, or juniors, it indicated that his thoughts reached into the future rather than the present. With ten vet- erans returning for next year's campaign and an equal number moving up from the B squad it begins to look as though building for the future isn't such a bad idea after all. Unable to use our diamond for batting practice, our team will be forced to play its first league game with no preparation.
