For more than a year the staff of the '58 Councilor has been working to bring you a complete record of this high school year. We have tried to in- clude every phase of educational and cultural development. We hope that upon turning the pages of this book you will feel that we have succeeded. If so, this success can only be attributed to the invaluable help and guid- ance we have received from our faculty and fellow students for which we are truly grateful. 745014 Oh! These are the ele- mentary schools where many of us began to build a foundation for high school. Richboro Elementary School Washington Crossing Elementary School 'zamf772,.. A school was founded in Newtown by Andrew Mc- Minn in 1772. This was held in the inn owned by An- drew and his wife, Nancy. The first paid schoolmaster in Newtown was Hugh Thompson. He bought some ground, presumably on the southeastern corner of Court and Penn Streets, and built his. school. However, no one is sure of the exact location. About 1830, a boarding school for girls was built and run by Ann Buckman. It was abandoned later. Then, in 1873, a stone building was constructed. A fire destroyed the office and many records during 1914. With a large addition in 1918, and more rooms which were added in 1931, the school continued to grow. Meanwhile, in the neighboring town of Richboro a similar scene was taking place. mile The high school, founded in 1896. was on the second floor of what was then the fire house. It offered a two- year course. Thomas Bock was the first principal and only teacher of the school. ln 1927, the school changed to a four-year course. The first unit of four rooms was huilt during 1928. Witli the addition of 1934, the last of the one room schools in the district was closed and in 1938, with the help of the P.W.A., another addition was made. In 1946, the two districts consolidated, and in April 1953, the ground was broken for the present school. We moved in during the fall of 1954. What does the future hold? An addition of 29 class- rooms and an auditorium has heen planned. We, the class of 1958. thank the School Board for making possible the advantages that have been ours during four wonderful years in high school. The twenty-five members of the School Board represent five school districts. The Executive Committee consists of two board members from each district. The Com- mittee meets each month to conduct regular business of the operation of the school. Often the students do not realize the important part that the School Board plays in our education. Now, particularly. as the much-needed addition to our school be- comes a reality, we are more than ever aware of the tremendous amount of planning and work in the running of a school. Om 1' Meeting during club periods and after school. the STUDENT COUNCIL tackles many important jobs. Meet- ings are called to order by President John Jackson who is assisted by Vice President Dick Lawrence. Treasurer Nancy Gorski, Secretary Judy Jewett, and Corresponding Secre- tary Dorothy Null. The Council is composed of two representatives from each Senior High Class plus five officers and one honorary member under the leadership of Mrs. Gaither. The Coun- cil has various committees for its activities: The Exchange Committee, which holds the annual exchange dance with George School: The Assembly Committee. which plans the assemblies for the yearg The Public Address System Committee, which announces the student bulletins each morning: and the Student-Faculty Committee. The Coun- cil works with the P.T.A. in the planning of programs and attendance drives and sponsors S-Day. when students are elected to take over administrative jobs. The JUNIOR HIGH STIQDENT COUNCIL is composed of two representatives from each homeroom under the direction of Nlr. Houpt. This group represents students to the administration, sponsors Junior High activities. and welcomes new students to C.R. Another project of the Junior Council is the C.R. Booster Pin Club. This Club helps improve school spirit and attendance at sports func- tions. These students are getting valuable lessons in lead- ership and planning. The Officers are: President, Donald Schaffer: Vice President. Ralph Espositog Secretary. Judy Randall: Treasurer. Cheryl Smith. No one can be prouder than the students are of the ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION at C.R. Through this organi- zation comes a chance for each student to work for his school. The fans will tell you the new fence around the football field is Nswellfi No one can disagree. for each student helped to buy it by selling magazines. The sports activities at Council Rock are supported. not by taxes. but by the money raised each year through the efforts at the A.A. and the student body. In addition to the annual magazine drive, the A.A. sells programs at football games, runs the student store where one can buy school and gym supplies. and produces a gym show every year. Qfappq Wasted When school opens. the Senior High Chorus, under the direction of Mr. Bacso. starts practicing for its first appearance. a Thanksgiving program. The activity of the Chorus accelerates as Christmas Concert, exchange pro- grams with other schools. Spring Concert and Commence- ment follow in quick succession. Some of the Chorus members have the privilege of singing in the Bucks County Music Festival. Also. several of the members have the honor of being chosen for the South-Eastern District Chorus. Seniors, who have been 72 in chorus for three years, receive awards at the end of their final year. One event. eagerly awaited. is the Chorus' annual trip to New York. Last year the group visited the lfnited Na- tions Building. the Museum of Natural History. and Radio City. It was the main topic of conversation for manv days afterward. The Senior High Chorus is one of the representatives our school sets before the public. We can be proud of our Music Department and the fine job it does. There is a hushed silence in the gy m. A chord is struck on the piano. Forty voices hurst into song. This is the JLNIOR HIGH CHORIS. Chorus members from grades seven to nine concentrate on material written for the unchanged voice. Negro Spirituals are done especially' well hy this group. Learn- ing to work together is another important phase of this department's program. Before the seventh grade. some work is done with different voice parts. hut not on a partic- ularly large scale. Now. comes the task of carrying a part. and the ex en more difficult one of hlending individual voices into one vast choir. A knowledge of reading music must he gained if the student is to appreciate his experiences with the group. Junior High Chorus participates in the County Music Festival. Outstanding mem- lmers from each voice section are sent to this event. Providing music for our Christmas and Spring Concerts is another challenge for the group. The leaders of ,Iunior Chorus. Smith. weetgf Everyone is familiar with Sousa's peppy marches and our BAND is no exception. This band. consisting of about fifty members, plays for assemblies as well as the school concerts. Not limited just to marches, the band. which becomes more versatile each year. has some fine semi-classical and novelty pieces in its repertoire. This group is on hand for all our football games, marching in interesting forma- tions at half-time. No football game would be complete without the backing of our band. and the Council Rock Fight Songw under the direction of Mr. Thomas. There are times when more classical music is needed. For just this purpose the ORCHESTRA was formed. Meeting to practice once a week. the thirty-one members work up interesting new arrangements under the skillful direction of Mr. Thomas. The Orchestra performs for the Christmas Concert. Alfred Wriglit. the group functions. keeping order in the halls and on stairs. The monitors leave class two minutes before the end of the period to go to their assigned posts. During the passing of classes. it is their duty to see that congestion is kept to a minimum. Joan Craser, and Mary Conway. SERVICE CLUB Teachers are busy people with many jobs that need to be done. Now Council Rock teachers have a first- aid station. our SERVICE CLIIB. Club members type reports. cheek papers. and make themselves indis- pensable to the teachers whom they assist. Club members are gaining val- uable experience and are able to lift a heavy bundle of clerical work from the shoulders of our hard-working teaching staff. The Council Rock Service Club has a unique purpose. indeed. and is one of the most useful organizations in 'FX our school. LIBRARY ASSISTANTS Looking for a particular book? One of our twenty-two LIBRARY ASSISTANTS will be only too glad to help you find it and check it out for you. The club meeting is held with the girls finding our temporary library quarters rather close. How- ever. when the addition to our school is finished. they will have plenty of room. Working with lVIiss Wagiier. the Library Assistants mend books and prepare new books for use, in addition to checking books in and out. Odom VISUAL AIDS CLUB Unlike many clubs, the VISUAL AIDS CLUB assists the school by performing the services of showing movies, running slide projectors, tape recorders, and record players. These Junior High club members are divided into four groups with a stu- dent instructor at the head of each, who shows them how to handle the equipment. Each member must pass a rigid test before he is allowed to run any of the equipment without supervision. Students and teachers alike owe a debt of gratitude to these club members, their director, Miss Wag- ner, and their sponsors. Mrs. Peiffer and Mr. Fineman. Tvnder the supervision of Mr. Kershaw and chairman. Peggy Hentz, the DECOR.-XTOR5 CLYB keeps the bulletin boards and show- cases up-to-date with seasonal activities. Long hours are spent preparing signs and displays: the decorations for all important school functions are the result of original ideas by club members. The Decorators Club seldom receives recognition from the student body who stops to read its bulletin boards but does not realize the hard work and ingenuity of these club members. Announcing sports events and school activities. these posters are designed to catch the eye of all who pass by Council Rock. Posters of all sizes and with various art styles are issued from the art room every club period by this industrious group. Although the Council Rock boys lost their first game to Lower Moreland, they did not lose their spirit. They kept fighting and came through with a victory over the favored Jenkintown Drakes. and a tie with Rordentown. ln spite of the fact that these first three games were not league games, they gave the boys additional practice and put them in great spirit to start the league season. The fellows lost their first five league games. But the C.R. Indians would not give up. and with a 14- 0 score, heat Bristol. This was their first league vic- tory since 1954. On Thanksgiving the team played the annual Turkey-Day game with Wm. Tennent. After a good fight the CR. team lost by a score of 27-6. From the beginning these fellows worked hard and cooperated as a team should. Many close games were won or lost by these boys in overtimes or by seconds. They met with a lot of rought luck during the season. but were able to break even. winning T and losing T. One of the most exciting games played was the victory over Charles Boehm on their court. After 4 losses in a row our boys came through with a score of 40-21. Twice our fellows lost by very close scores to last year,s champs. Ben Franklin. Ben- salemis court was the scene of a thrilling game. The last 2 seconds brought a 29-28 victory for our hard-playing Council Rock boys. Coaching this squad was head coach. The senior high fellows started practice toward the end of Noyemher. Practicing every night on the hard wood proved to he worthwhile to these eager lmoys. Mr. Bor- sayage. head coach. and his assistant. Mr. Schaffer. worked hard with these fellows. They were also guided lay their captains. John Jackson and Joe Harold. One of the most exciting sessions of the hasket- hall season was the overtime game played in the CH. gym against Bristol. it was a yery tight game all the way. The last quarter ended in a tie of 65- 65. ln the oycrtimc CR. scored ll points to Bris- tolis 5 points to end the game in a T6-T0 win for CR. Although the fellows didn't become champs they knew what team spirit and team work was. and deserve a lot of credit for their fine playing and display of sportsmanship. With a new coach, Miss Roadside, practice was begun on December 2. Miss Roadside cut the squad to 20 girls after several practices. She proved to be a fine leader and a good basketball coach. .-Xfternoon upon afternoon of practice helped the girls acquire the vital team spirit and cooperation needed for league competition. February 6 found a close. exciting game being played in the CH. gym with the Bristol girls. Bristol held the lead throughout most of the game. Coming through in the last quarter. our girls were able to beat Bristol by 3 points with the game end- ing I3 to -10. The varsity captains. Lee Yeager and Edna Fleer. were assisted by ,l.V. captain Virginia Blake and co-captain Linda Cray. This starts in the tenth grade with theory, which is taught from books and through rrmvies. When the student is of age, if he so desires, he may take practical work in the Driver Ed. car for about six weeks under instructors Mr. Borsavage and Mr. Spearman.
