FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORE YEARS The class of '56, newly arrived from Richboro, entered their freshman year full of anticipation and pride at really being part of the Senior High two separate homerooms elected officers, Bill Caul as President, Bob Bishof as Vice President, and Joyce Koyen as Secretary-Treasurer for one room, Albert Stockholm, President, Bob Traub, Vice President, and Mary Lou Neal, Secretary-Treasurer for the other room. Our class officers, advised by Mr. Feaster, Miss Wagner, and Mr. Wickel were: Bob Kench, President, Warren Hogeland, Vice President, Jean Bellmeyer, Secretary, Joan Keller, Treasurer. We made a good start on our fund for the Washington trip by selling candy to the hungry upper-classmen. We sponsored the Freshman Hoedownf' a square dance with George White as Caller, and a Bonfire, which the whole school enioyed. Other activities were the All-Freshman Talent Show, guidance trips, and our contributions to the school fair. Janet Luff, Betty Ann Reed, David Bottke, and Fritz Riley represented us in A.A. and Pam Conrad, Gerry Tomlinson, Bob Bartholomew, and Sidney Peer saw to freshman interests in Student Council. We accomplished a lot as sophomores under the able leadership of Miss Wil- liams, Mr. Kershaw and Mr. M. Miller. Mr. Kershaw's ability with floral arrange- ments was a great help on the Sophomore Flower Show. Aided by an excellent executive committee of Bill Caul, President, Bob Bishof, Vice President, Joyce Koyen, Secretary, Phyllis Maholm, Corresponding Secretary, and Jean Bellrneyer, Treasurer, we wrote a class constitution, selected red and white roses as our class flowers, black and white for class colors, and Duty is ours, Results are God's as our motto. We called our Halloween dance Spook Trot and selected Mr. and Mrs. Chaurer as Square-dance callers. Music was supplied by our own Dick McGee and his Off Beats. We also took an educational trip to Philadelphia. Gerri Tom- linson, Irene Walter, Joyce Feaster, Sidney Peer, and Bob Kirk vehemently ex- pressed their opinions in Student Council, while Alida Voorhees, Dave Bottke, Fritz Riley and Janet Luff lent able hands to A.A. projects. 4I Come on! Hustle ihose bags. All tips gratefuly accepted! BELL HOPS-B. Caul, T. De Young, B. Traub, A. Stockholm. ln l954 we entered the new school and took over the cafeteria duties, led by Bill Caul, which added a whopping amount to our treasury. Our class set a tradi- tion for our followers-the election of a gridiron sweetheart with nominations by the football squad. Our sweetheart was Pam Conrad as Mr. Kratz announced at our pep-rally dance, the Bonfire Boogie. Happily we got our class rings before Christmas. We decorated the cafeteria for Christmas without forgetting our home rooms. Decorations in the cafeteria in the spring for the Senior Breakfast, managed by lrene Walter, helped to make the breakfast the most spectacular one in history. The new cafeteria could accommodate the whole faculty besides seniors and lun- iors. After the bell-hops stowed the last senior bag on the bus, we went to class and slept. Another responsibility placed on our shoulders was monitor duty. Headed by Albert Stockholm, and selected solely from our class, they started duty when the seniors left and continued until our Washington trip the following year. Our officers, selected the previous year, were:Joe Stidham, President, Dave Bottke, Vice President, Joyce Koyen, Secretary, Sandy Davis, Corresponding-Seo retary, and .lean Bellmeyer, Treasurer. The crowning event of the year was the prom, Melody of Roses. 1 K Q C Q ...IN Ig -yr X LB: L !r , 7-fflllllui' 42 X ! -' ' Zj, l X Surrounoed by steam, we cooked happily on 4 4 , 4 if erve lunches in the cafeteria kitchen. That year Laverne Benner, Janet Luft, Albert Stockholm and Alida Voorhees, helped raise money tor AA. and Bob Bartholomew, Bob Bishot, Kathy Bodnar, Warren l-logeland, Gerri Tomlinson, Jane Tomlinson, and Irene Walter contributed their efforts to Student Council activities. FOOTBALL DANCE - PROM Since the opening of the school year, the Juniors were seen working hard in the cafeteria. Each week according to a set schedule certain students took over assigned iobs. Everyone took part during the year. Besides working in the kitchen, students work as cashiers and take care of the candy and ice cream counters. This project provides good experience for the Juniors as well as increasing their treasury considerably. The cafeteria was not the Juniors' only proiect. The all important event in a high school career happened to the Class of '57. Class rings arrived -not the old ones but an entirely new style. Flashing fingers were noted on all the Juniors for many weeks afterwards. Plans for the Junior Prorn began early in the year and continued right up to the last minute as usual. Through the hard work of the Sophomores with the assistance of their advisors, the show was very successful. Day in and day out during the school year, visitors to Council Rock receive a cordial welcome from the receptionists. These receptionists are members of the Sophomore Class. This proiect is headed by a student committee. Besides greet- ing the visitors, the receptionists perform various other duties. It is their iob to sign the visitors in, and conduct them through the school if they so wish. They have been doing a good iob and per- form a great service for the school. .4 If lan .M 7, SX AJ rl i in - ' 6 L L 1 Y 5l x ' . - for l J R ' l l 14 L' ' ROOM l36-First row: J, Jewett, B. Meeting during lunch and at night whenever necessary, the staff and its committees have worked hard, particularly in meeting dead- lines. Miss Alice Wagner, faculty advisor for the yearbook, guided the staff. Her experience and guidance proved invaluable to the group. Early in the year Deanna Krusen, Carolyn Tomlinson, Polly Buckingham and Miss Wagner attended a yearbook conference at Columbia University. The information and ideas they brought back helped the staff to improve the quality of the COUNCI- LOR. Novv the work is finished, and the staff presents to you the i956 COUNCILOR. We hope you enioy it as much as we have enioyed work- ing on it. COUNCILOR EDITORS M. Van Hart, Literary, J. Albright, Art, V. Flatch, Boys Sports Q Porter Subscription D Krusen Editor in-Chief, C. Under the direction of Mr. George Thomas the Concert Band marched at many of the foot- ball games and also participated in other school and civic activities. Included in the school activities were the Christmas Musical, the Spring Concert and the Ex- change Programs. The Concert Band met three times a week and consisted of forty-eight mem- bers. The Band was a mother organization to many other musical organizations. One of these was the Dance Band. Led by Mr. Thomas they played for many school functions. In this their second year, their membership totaled thirteen. Still another, and even newer organization was the Girls' Orchestra. They par- ticipated in both the Christmas Musical and the Spring Concert. The twenty-eight girls met once a week for rehearsal. The Junior High Band offered a chance for twenty-six musically inclined mem- bers of the Junior High School to get band experience. They practiced together once a week. Following tryouts, our five maiorettes were chosen. With Louise Burns as head rnaiorette, they rrarched with the band at many of the football games. Also per- forming at the football games and some of the basketball games was another new organization, the Drill Team. Under the leadership of their executive heads, Lee Walker, Jo Ann Coffey, Joan Coffey, and Lyn Greim, the eighteen girls added cluite a bit of color to many of our games. 66 X . . Behind the bashful grins and youthful faces of these Junior High choristers lies the potential choral program of Council Rock. Aside from having fun, these young singers work hard to produce the kind of music that makes their audiences tingle. Yes, they might be off key, once or twice, or even have a little trouble with three part harmony, but only through practice do they learn to sing well. Mrs. Jeanne Anne Clcud, director, and Mr. J. Lawton Brown, accompanist, help the chorus over rough spots and dig into the files to find music which both the singers and listen- ers will enioy. Christmas is usually the first appearance of the chorus and they offer a variety of carols as well as folk songs. The next important date would be the Spring Musical in which they always do a fine iob. Singing in a chorus such as this offers to Junior High students the opportunity of learning to sing a melody against counter parts and those that can, will make fine Senior High Chorus and Bucks County Music Festival candidates. 70 MUSIC IN THE AIR First row: N. Bishof, J. Albright, L. Adams, L. Smith, J. Jefferson, J. Kaiser, The auditorium is dimmed, into the spotlight walks Mr. John Bacso, director, he raises his arms and from out of 43 mouths wells harmony which fills every corner, casting a spell on the audience. The demand for choral music, especially at Christmas and commencement keeps the chorus continually practicing and planning for their next performance. The Spring Concert is still another time when the chorus is expected to have a fine program prepared. One of the rewards of singing with the group is being able to go on the annual New York trip. The young vocalists leave early on a bus bound for the city and spend one glorious day among the New Yorkers. ln the past years such places have been visited as Radio City Music Hall, the Metropolitan Opera House, the Empire State Building and the U. N. This type of group travel provides knowledge of places and peo- ple which can't be read from any text book. For the Seniors, these years spent in chorus will bring hope of soon joining college glee clubs, community singing groups, or church choirs. The Juniors will no doubt be looking forward to their coming year when they will be able to lift noses slightly upward when a Freshman sings a sour note. The Sophomores, the group with the most potential, who can take advantage of two more years of training, will be getting ready to give up their position to their future replace' ments, the present Freshmen. This circle has been in motion for years and only proves that the past, present and future of our chorus, has been and will always be one of which CR. can well be proud. 7l 'Q on -41, ELEVENTH AND TWELFTH GRADE NURSING CLUB-Seated: J. ABOUT THESE PROFESSIONS Nursing Club provides for Council Rock's future Florence Nightingales an op- portunity to discover the rewards and importance of nursing as a career. Due to the increased number of girls interested in the Future Nurses Club this year it was divided into two clubs, one lOth grade and the other for llth and l2th grades. Each club meets once a week in the Health Suite under the leadership of Mrs. .lean Schaffer. The purpose of the clubs is to inform the girls of the require- ments of nursing and to help them make a wise choice as to which field of nurs- ing they will enter. This year the club made cancer dressings, scrapbooks for hospitals, and visited schools of nursing. Through these and other activities, the girls become acquainted with some of the duties of practical as well as professional nurses. The Council Rock Future Teachers Association chapter meets once a week in the library, under the guidance of Miss Alice Wagner. Membership is open to senior high school students, These future Miss Brooks study, plan and practice various techniques of teaching. Students teach in the elementary schools throughout the district and in the high school. Movies, lectures, conferences and looking into col- leges in which the members have an interest are part of the association's plans. 73 sm' fi il -v . l Y 1 1- -' f.- 1 1 n ' 1' 'fr Jffwg .j'!, 7 a 'f Fwsr row. Most people like to take pictures and many with no training frequently are dismayed at the results of their efforts. Photo Club offers our students a chance to learn about and develop the art of taking better pictures. When the task of skillfully loading a camera is accomplished and the pictures are taken the Photo Club members buzz over to the dark room where they learn to print and develop film under experienced leadership of Mr. Leonard Dass. Our dark room equipment is quite extensive and is continually being in- creased. Through study and experience Photo Club members begin to understand principles of photography which will aid them each time they take a picture. A picture is worth a thousand words. This saying is confirmed each time the reels begin to turn and images race across the screens while a booming voice explains about atoms, France, current events, or airplanes. Visual Aids Club is the organization which trains young men and women to operate motion picture pro- jectors. Of course it takes time and patience for students to develop skill in this craft. Visual Aids Club provides the opportunity for both. The first task to learn is setting up the screen and audio equipment, then comes the task of threading the machine. This demands accuracy developed only through experience. It is a great relief for teachers to know that when they order a film it will be ready to be seen in a short time, with little confusion. Visual Aid Club members also learn the correct maintenance of equipment. Only through proper care will our screens and projectors last a long time. 75 .. 0 4' . . AID SCHOOL AND FACULTY A newly organized club has been started this year under the supervision of Miss Mary Williams. This club is known as the Service Club. Every Thursday during seventh period you will find twenty selected students busily typing, filing, and correcting papers. The main purpose of this club is to help different teachers with odd iobs. This club helps the students to be useful, and to improve their clerical skills. Due to the increase of the number of students in our school, monitors are needed to maintain orderly passing in the halls. The monitors are members of the Senior Class, who are selected by their advisors. They function under the supervision of Mr. Dominic Sagolla. Each monitor is assigned a post in a different part of the school. Besides directing traffic in the halls, monitors direct students to assembly in an orderly manner. Take one large room, fill it with piles and piles of books, newspapers, and maga- zines and hang a sign saying Library. As it stands, this room is of little value to students seeking information or pleasure reading, but with the addition of a filing system, it is transformed into an efficient research center. ln our library, Miss Alice Wagner is in charge of maintaining the order, the system of filing, and the condition of the books. This iob consumes many more hours than are pro- vided, and therefore, Miss Wagner trains a group of assistants to help in the library. Through this training which includes checking books in and out, keeping current newspapers and magazines on the racks, repairing books, and aiding stu- dents searching for certain information, they learn that efficiency is the basis for a well-organized library. 77 1 s -4 O., 37 Q I 5 sr ex' l ll swf Y J. The school supplies all the materials while the members make enameled ievvelry, plaster-of-Paris dec- orations and hot mats from cork. Some work in tempera paint and crayons on such subiects as landscapes and coats-of-arms. Each does vvhat he chooses and finds time to have fun as well as to make useful and decorative objects for the home. Every Tuesday afternoon a group of young scientists gather in the lab with Mr. Morrison Miller. The club's purpose is to further the scientific interests' of the members. The club plans a program and individuals volunteer to perform experi- ments and give reports, which are then discussed by the club as a whole. One experiment involved distilling hard cider into vinegar. There are T2 boys and one girl in the club. The officers are: Bill Smith, President and Phyllis Heusher, Secre- tary. This club, sponsored by Mr. Dale Miller, is composed of Junior High students. They study ornithology through field trips, motion pictures, and reports. A plan- ning committee organizes club meetings and reports are on a volunteer basis. Their purpose is to promote interest among the students in preserving bird life, and to lay the groundwork for a healthful hobby. The officers are: Blythe Danner, President, Pat Manicini, Vice President, Olive Steele, Secretary. 79 .-... nv 1. 'I if fflxx t First row: J. Solis, J, Muller, L, Greim, C. Gindhart, D. Montgomery. When Miss Williams is unable to be present the club is under the supervision of Nancy Satterthwaite, student teacher. There are twenty club members from grades ten through twelve. This year the Bible Club has a booming enrollment of 65, which is bigger than any other Bible Club in this area. It is sponsored by Mr. Burns and Harold Schmidt, affectionately known as Smitty, who comes to our school to lead each club meet- ing. He also leads other clubs in the surrounding schools. Its aim is to further Christianity in our school. The officers are: Connie Walker, President, Joan Lodge, Vice President, Laura Wilkes, Secretary, Ted Sasim, Treasurer, Don Sutton and Carol Pierman, Reporters. The club combines pleasure and religion in singing hymns, doing Bible quizzes, and group prayer. The C.R. basketball team participated in the Holiday Tournament at William Tennent. Although not victorious, they played had and displayed their best. With the good material coming along, Council Rock should have better teams each year. The sportsmanship this year's team displayed was up to the school tradition. This year was the first year of league competition for the girls' basketball team. The season had a good beginning when the CR. girls beat William Tennent. The high scorer of this game, and all other games, was Pat Derry. The CR. girls practiced hard under the direction of Mrs. Scott, coach, and Edna Fleer, the captain. This practice will pay off in future games. The Junior Varsity deserves credit for their spirit and fight. After each varsity game there is a J.V. game, so these girls had lots of practice. Both teams have a lot of pep and enthusiasm. This should take them far in their future battles toward a championship. MARJIE VAN HART PAM CONRAD Team Opponent W.
