For eleven years, she has been the very capable adviser of the school publications. Although she has resigned as our adviser, she has been most gracious in guiding and counseling us this past year. With sincere appreciation of her fine contributions as adviser and teacher in Coughlin High School, we dedicate this 1963 BREIDLIN to Mrs. Margaret R. Evans. WH' IVIRS. MARGARET EVANS R 'f fi'-. 5 Three FOREVVURD Throughout the centuries, the one vital factor that has made it possible for mankind to achieve the present level of civilization has been the God-given gift of curiosity. Curiosity is the foundation upon which edu- cation and advancement are based. This thirst for knowledge has become manifest in the many ingenious discoveries and in- ventions that characterize our modern world. If it were not for this constant desire to increase knowledge, civilization would stag- nate and die. But man has kept the flame of curiosity burning by never-ending research and discovery. From the invention of the wheel to intricate present day technology, the quest for knowledge has never ceased. And now, in the twentieth century, man has embarked on the greatest adventure of all time. He has raised his eyes to the stars, and has accepted their age-old challenge. He has finally set foot on the threshold of space. This first footstep is like the first cry of a baby, and it will some day develop into a resounding voice that will echo through the entire universe. We, the class of 1963, are a part of this first step. Upon our shoulders rests the task of upholding the standards that have made possible man's first ventures into space. It is up to us to keep the burning flame of curi- osity alive. It is our prayer that God may give man the ability, courage, and perseverance to succeed in the momentous task. AdlT1ihiSIl aIiOh MR. Ritchie Six Victor F. Baiz PRINCIPAL PRINCIPAL'5 MESSAGE A writer once wrote these lines, Youth is not a time of life-it is a state of mind. It is not a matter of red cheeks, red lips, and supple knees. It is a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions, it is a freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over a life of ease. This often exists in a man of 50 or more, than in a boy of 20. Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years, people grow old by de- serting their ideals. These lines are particularly significant to- day because in the rapidly changing world of today, in the struggles of human relation- ships, and in the chaos of national and in- ternational problems, we need more than ever to maintain worthwhile concepts and ideals. The dignity and respect of the in- dividual is just as important today as it was in the days of the formations of this country. Time runs on, and the graduates and un- derclassmen of today are the parents of the children of tomorrow. You are the ones who will inculcate in your children the standards of conduct and the ideals that should make this country and this world a better place to live in than ever before. Your teachers have tried to do their part, and you owe much to them for their patience and their persistence in giving you the best that was in them. To the Graduate-God Speed. To the underclassmen-Do the very best that you can, then do a little better. CO-ORDINATORS AND SUPERVISORS FIRST ROW: Mr. Schimmel, Mrs. SECOND ROW: Mr, Jones. Mr, Evans. Carlin. Mr. Super. Smmgt THE SENIOR CLASS - 1963 This June, two hundred and forty-one seniors will leave Coughlin High School, but we shall not go unattended. With us will go all the memories we share of the green years spent at our Alma Mater. This High School has been, for us, our own small ivy-clad community. To the democratic life of this school each senior has contributed a share toward the fulfillment of this community's most serious purpose-the education of each student, symbolized by the presentation of diplomas on Commencement to the members of the graduating class. Some members of this class have excelled academically, some have helped by stepping forward to lead clubs and or- ganizations in worth-while endeavors, some have become fine athletes who have evidenced physical fitness and exemplified ideals of good sportsmanship and fair play. Others have formed literary and dramatic circles. Without all these there would have been no scholastic honor societies, no school publications, no senior play, no chapel programs, no sports championships! Every senior has contributed, in his own way, toward the successes and accomplishments of this school community. The Class of '63 with its scholars, athletes, artists, writers-all good citizens- will go from these halls toward new frontiers. Having developed individual skills and achieved high school successes, and having learned to work together, the mem- bers of the Class of '63 will continue to make greater contributions to a larger life-remembering, gratefully, these high school years. Finally at 8:15 P.M. the lights dimmed and the curtain rose. The heroine of the play, Judy, seemed to get into constant trouble. She was forever poking her nose into other people's business trying to be help- ful. Through her antics she arranged a marriage for her Uncle Willis, got her father fired, while she and her friend Fuffy set the world straight. Judy wasn't her father's only problem, Lois' boyfriends were always cluttering up the house and had to be thrown out. Fortunately everything turned out fine, and Judy acted as though she had planned it that way. Sixty CAST OF CHARACTERS Harry Graves Joe Grace Graves Hilda Lois Graves Judy Graves Fuffy Adams ., J. B. BREIDLIN SKIT On March 19, under the excellent leadership of Miss Williams, the Masquers presented the annual Breidlin Skit. The play, Sir Coughlin and the Drag- on, was adapted by Albert Eddy from an old Eng- lish play, Saint George and the Dragon. In dire distress, Lady Goofus described how the dragon had eaten her BREIDLIN. Fortunately, Sir Coughlin and his two friends promised to save the day. A terrible battle ensued, and both attacker and attacked were slain. However, the trusty doctor soon appeared on the scene. The entire cast rose from the iaws of death and sang a stirring chorus of Roll Out the BreidIin . The play was enjoyed immensely, and was inter- rupted again ancl again by uproarious applause. This was the third consecutive year that Walter won top honors at the Science Fair. Walter also was awarded the grand championship at the King's College and the University ol Scranton Fairs, which en- titled him to enter his exhibit in the National Science Fair at Albuquerque, New Mexico. SECOND ROW: Kulikowich, Ken- nedy, Allen, Supinski, Borick, Shovlin Wychock, Yatko, Holthaus. The Coughlin Crusaders displayed a relentless fight- ing spirit throughout the '62 season. Showing continued improvement as the season progressed, Coughlin rounded out their schedule with convincing victories over Swoyer- ville and Larksville and a near win at Kingston. Though the team didn't cross their opponent's goal very often, their varied offensive maneuvers provided many thrilling moments during the past season. To illus- trate Coach lvloran's ability in teaching the team versa- tility, the snap of the ball was called from the straight T , the spread, and wing formations. Joe Stencik led the team in scoring with 24 points. Lou Blaum was second with 18. Stencik or Gryczko could pick up needed extra yardage by running through holes opened by Yatko, Kulikowich, Everett, and Huhn in the center of the line. The off-tackle plays, led by Wychock, Kennedy, Sweeney, and Burke were usually carried out by Phillips, Shovlin, Paciotti, and Borick. Black, McCarthy, Babuscak, and Su- pinski paved the way for Blaum's rollouts and Lazarski's sweeps around end. Credit should also be given to quarterback Koval, who did a fine job of filling in when needed, and to Bill Ashman and Jack Babuscak, who saw limited action because of leg injuries. THIRD ROW: Head Coach, Mr. Mor- an, Baltuskonis, Pryor, Everett, Mc- Carthy, Gildea, Babuschak, Kobuta, Davenport, Asst. Coach, Mr. Solomon. FOURTH ROW: Krute, Lazarski, Gryczko, Kane, Zych, Mack, Black, Burke, Sabatini, Freshman Coach, Mr. Kwak, Rosiak. The defensive line led by AI Yatko, was always ready to stop any opponent's scoring threat. Any loose ball was usually picked up by Kennedy or Sweeney, and opposing team quarterbacks had to be cautious when- ever they threw the pigskin, for any stray pass could be pulled in by Shovlin, Blaum, or Paciotti, The credit for putting together the football team goes to its three fine coaches, Mr. Moran, Mr. Solomon, and Mr. Kwak. Congratulations to Al Yatko on his receiving All- Scholastic honors and on his receiving Honorable Men- tion to Pennsylvania's Big 33 and the All-State Team. The team will have a host of returnees who saw plenty of action during the past season and who could very well lead Coughlin to Conference Honors next year. These include, Lazarski, Gryczko, Black, Burke, Pryor, Everett, McCarthy, M. Babuscak, Blaum, Huhn, Paciotti, Sweeney, and Kane. A few of the outstanding units of our school are the Cheerleaders, Strutters, and Majorettes. These groups add colorful highlights to athletic events and other activities in which our school is represented. The Cheerleaders, consisting of five Senior and four Junior girls, is a group in- tended to arouse school spirit and let the team know that they have the full support of the student body. During football season, the Strutters, with their entertaining routines, add color to the many activities in which they participate. The girls, in their brilliant red and white uniforms, can be seen marching in time to the music of the band. The Majorettes, with their twirling and dancing routines, entertain the crowds and provide a relief from the tension of the football games. These talented girls also participate in several of the cheer practices. These groups deserve to be commended for the fine work they have been doing throughout the year. The Coughlin basketball team, coached by Mr- Jack Jones, showed the Crusader fans good com- petitive basketball, even though their efforts aren't evidenced by their win-loss record. Led by Joe Stencik and Pat Kelly, the squad never let up on the opposing team. Anushko, Sprau, Blaum, Ashman, and Trethaway were always ready to rally the team and bring it closer to victory. It was often only a quick scoring spurt by their oppo- nent which brought them defeat. Returning to the squad next season are: Blaum, Trethaway, Norieka, Waskiewicz, and IvlacCarthy. They have accumulated a seasonal record of four wins and three losses, with one game remaining- The highlight of the season is the triple-play Coughlin accomplished against Wyoming Seminary. The play went from Spernoga, to Nemetz, to Was- kiewicz, to Montague. The team sluggers are Spernoga, Craig, and Sprau. Their hitting, along with Trethaway's and W. Smith's, give the Crusader pitchers the backing they need. The mainstay of the Coughlin moundstaff is Chet Rhodes, who is undefeated, and has gained all of Coughlin's conference victories. He had a high of eleven strikeouts against GAR. Best ol luck next season.
