When Life's noontime joy has vanished Lost in reverie, Like the glory of the sunset School-day dreams we see. ?v vd In a recent issue of the Saturday Evening Post, in one of a series called The Face of America , was pictured a great black oak grown from an acorn which fell to the ground soon after Columbus came to the New World. The description goes on to say that the tree was already ancient when the Dutch traders came to New Amsterdam and when Thomas Iefferson signed the Declaration of Independence. By World War I, the oak was five hundred years old. It is a magnificent specimen, ninety feet high with its bole nineteen feet, nine inches around. The sight of this great tree prompts us to say that, indeed, great oaks from little acorns growvg and the picture of its greatness makes us feel ambi- tious and humble. May we compare the class of 1958 to the small acorn when, in 1946, the members of the class entered first grade. Through the twelve years that have fol- lowed we have grown like the oak reaching upward and outward. We have grown physically, mentally, and spiritually. A well-planned curriculum, fine buildings, skilled teachers and administra- tors have helped. We hope that the class of 1958 has been worthy of all the influ- ences that have helped its members grow. We go out into a hectic and turbulent world knowing that our roots have been firmly planted in the good soil of a fine education, which will certainly be the influencing force in helping us to understand the challenges and chances of this modern world. We are young and ambitious and will endeavor to fulfill our dreams. But we are also humble, as those must be who realized ,how wide the world stands out around us and how great are the challenges which we must accept. As time goes by, it is hoped that this book will become a source of happy reminiscences of the years of growing- the green yearsf' May we who have had the pleasure of producing the Breidlin wish all of the seniors the very best in life as you grow like the great oak in strength, and dignity, and peace.
