National Honor Society It is only when the torch of Knowledge serves to kindle the flame of each, that we can be securely lighted along the road that leads to progress. The flaming torch, a symbol of knowledge and the light of truth, describes a pin that will be worn with pride by the seniors who have maintained the highest averages during four years of high school. The Class of ,SS is proud to have thirty- one students as members of the National Honor Society. Members consist of the upper quarter of the class limited to fifteen per-cent. Since the year, 1923, when the National Honor Society was founded, it has been the tradition to choose its members by the four ideals: leadership, good char- acter, scholarship, and service. Each year a day is set aside to honor the members of this society. On this day the members are awarded pins, and a program follows with the participants being members of the society. We hope that this yearis representation in the National Honor Society will serve as an incentive to the future graduates of Coughlin High School, and that they strive to earn membership in this honorary organization. Open Zetter To The Senior Cla As you approach the day of graduation from high school, we rejoice with you in seeing your dream come true. For this aim your parents and your teachers have hoped, have planned, and have worked with you. Now, ou are leavin school in an a TC when man has made tremendous ro- fu gress in science. With atomic power he has sent rockets into outer space, travelled in jet airplanes, invented terrible weapons for war, and discovered wonderful and useful things for the purposes of peace. You, as members of the Class of l958, may have a less laborious life because of these great innovations. lVly prayer is, that while you enjoy these scientific marvels, you will not forget the human values that give a richer and a fuller life. Life gains meaning from the way people live together-in the nation, in the commu- nity, and in the home. Each individual person influences and is influenced by every other individual. By our conduct toward each other, we ourselves determine whether life is worth living. We must know, as we face lifeis problems, that no one can be self-sufficient. To live for oneis self brings only unhappiness. We must share our joys, our sor- rows, and our hopes with others. Only in this way shall we live a truly happy life. We trust that here at Coughlin we have helped you to start in the right direction toward a successful life.
