Table of Con ten M ADMINISTRATION Board of Education-Supervisors Faculty-Maintenance CLASSES National Honor Society-Senior Classes-fHomerooms-Candids ACTIVITIES Publications-Drarnatics-Clubs- Outing- Music -May Day SPORTS Football-Basketball-Wrestling - Baseball-Track-Girls' Sports ?v vd In a recent issue of the Saturday Evening Post, in one of a series called The Face of America , was pictured a great black oak grown from an acorn which fell to the ground soon after Columbus came to the New World. The description goes on to say that the tree was already ancient when the Dutch traders came to New Amsterdam and when Thomas Iefferson signed the Declaration of Independence. By World War I, the oak was five hundred years old. It is a magnificent specimen, ninety feet high with its bole nineteen feet, nine inches around. The sight of this great tree prompts us to say that, indeed, great oaks from little acorns growvg and the picture of its greatness makes us feel ambi- tious and humble. May we compare the class of 1958 to the small acorn when, in 1946, the members of the class entered first grade. Through the twelve years that have fol- lowed we have grown like the oak reaching upward and outward. We have grown physically, mentally, and spiritually. A well-planned curriculum, fine buildings, skilled teachers and administra- tors have helped. We hope that the class of 1958 has been worthy of all the influ- ences that have helped its members grow. We go out into a hectic and turbulent world knowing that our roots have been firmly planted in the good soil of a fine education, which will certainly be the influencing force in helping us to understand the challenges and chances of this modern world. We are young and ambitious and will endeavor to fulfill our dreams. But we are also humble, as those must be who realized ,how wide the world stands out around us and how great are the challenges which we must accept. As time goes by, it is hoped that this book will become a source of happy reminiscences of the years of growing- the green yearsf' May we who have had the pleasure of producing the Breidlin wish all of the seniors the very best in life as you grow like the great oak in strength, and dignity, and peace. Princqzal Mr. Francis T. Truscott A fine school is many years in the making. The foundation and structure can be laid and built in a few months, the material and the furniture can be bought for money, the name on its wall, inscribed in large letters, spells out james M. Coughlin High Schoolv. These letters, too, Were had for money. The structure of Wood, steel, and stone took only a short time to buildg but the school has taken many years in the making. Our school is built on a foundation of strong character. And strong char- acter has a powerful influence over others. Mr. Frances T. Truscott and his prede- cessors have built our foundation. Our principal has helped build a structure made of trust, loyalty, honesty, sincerity, and dedication. He is a builder with these qualities which, in turn, per- meate the faculty and student body. If these qualities were not part of our school, surely it would crumble. Coughlin has, indeed, taken many years in the making. It is made of the finest materialg and it is kept strong by Mr. Truscott, one of our finest builders. 14AAiA tant Princqnaf Mr, Thomas E. The flaming torch, a symbol of knowledge and the light of truth, describes a pin that will be worn with pride by the seniors who have maintained the highest averages during four years of high school. The Class of ,SS is proud to have thirty- one students as members of the National Honor Society. Members consist of the upper quarter of the class limited to fifteen per-cent. Since the year, 1923, when the National Honor Society was founded, it has been the tradition to choose its members by the four ideals: leadership, good char- acter, scholarship, and service. Each year a day is set aside to honor the members of this society. On this day the members are awarded pins, and a program follows with the participants being members of the society. We hope that this yearis representation in the National Honor Society will serve as an incentive to the future graduates of Coughlin High School, and that they strive to earn membership in this honorary organization. In these great halls of fame Memories will live. Students and teachers dear, Weill always treasure you. With colors red and blue, Coughlin, live on. C7444 Song by Annette Barbini '58 Tune CNow and For Alwaysb Ever, forever, Friends we will always beg And, as we sal good-bye, Dreams will live on. Ever, forever, Coughlin, we're leaving now. Onward to other fields We must depart. What will our future bring? What e'er our destiny, Throughout our lives, We'll hold thy memory. Our hearts are saddened now As we part from school. So, Class of Fifty-Eight, We say farewell. Open Zetter To The Senior Cla As you approach the day of graduation from high school, we rejoice with you in seeing your dream come true. For this aim your parents and your teachers have hoped, have planned, and have worked with you. Now, ou are leavin school in an a TC when man has made tremendous ro- fu gress in science. With atomic power he has sent rockets into outer space, travelled in jet airplanes, invented terrible weapons for war, and discovered wonderful and useful things for the purposes of peace. You, as members of the Class of l958, may have a less laborious life because of these great innovations. lVly prayer is, that while you enjoy these scientific marvels, you will not forget the human values that give a richer and a fuller life. Life gains meaning from the way people live together-in the nation, in the commu- nity, and in the home. Each individual person influences and is influenced by every other individual. By our conduct toward each other, we ourselves determine whether life is worth living. We must know, as we face lifeis problems, that no one can be self-sufficient. To live for oneis self brings only unhappiness. We must share our joys, our sor- rows, and our hopes with others. Only in this way shall we live a truly happy life. We trust that here at Coughlin we have helped you to start in the right direction toward a successful life. With interest we shall watch as you pursue your course along the various roads that lie ahead. lVlay God richly bless your lives. tmwa twenty-three Give a careiul accounting. twenty-four The printed page is the result Be sure to hit the right key What are you testing for? M. Coughlin has, throughout the years, ob- tained fame for publishing excellent editions of the schoolis magazine and yearbook. Again, as usual, this year was no exception. The editorial staff, under the expert di- rection of Mrs. Margaret R. Evans, is to be congratulated on all their extracurricular Work done on this year's publications. Little is known of all the writing, scheming, plan- ning, proof reading, headaches that go on year-round in the Iournal Room to make each edition of the Journal a masterpiece. The editor-in-chief, Malca Gershen, and her assistant editor, Frances Knasiak, have f ity-six Frances Knasiak Assistant Editor Ioumal made possible this yearis five issues of the journal. This magazine has become a so Well-loved tradition that Coughlin students eagerly look forward to the days when it is distributed. In its thirty-fifth year of publication, the Breidlin has once again maintained the high standards of excellence. This was largely brought about by the efforts of Iohn Beck and Marie Danilack, editor-in-chief and as- sistant editor. The Work of Mr. Booth and his staff is not to be overlooked. They have very cap- ably taken care of the business pertaining to the publications. lames Heston Art Editor .amy 5 i lean Macarelli Business Manager We take pride and pleasure in publishing, fafitorial Staff First row Cleft to riqhtj: Glomcm, O'Brien, Zcrletcl. Senior F ay On Friday evening, December l3, l957, the Senior Class presented a comedy in three acts en- titled, Time Out for Gingerf' The play was un- der the direction of Miss Myvanwy Williams and told about a typical American family. Well, not quite typical! The Carol family had one big problem-their daughter, Ginger. It seemed that fourteen-year-old Ginger, was more interested in playing football on the school team, than she was in the usual teen-age topics. When Ginger finally did make the team, her whole family disapproved, except Mr. Carol. lVlr. Carol was quite delighted with the situation. Many problems arose from Ginger's unusual in- terest. But the Carol family met its problems and came through with flying colors. L'All,s well that ends Wellu, and the play did have a happy ending. Hard work, time, and patience went into the production of this play. It was a splendid per- formance and enjoyed by everyone. Boola, boola, Carol, you're a foola. Just what do you mean by that? Variety was the theme that shone through this colorful May Day program. Starting the program were tumbling and trampoline teams composed of hoth girls and boys from the gym classes. Dancing was also highlighted that after- noon. Different kinds of dances were demon- strated, such as modern dancing and folk or square dancing. Sprinkled through these group activities were solo numbers in tap and ballet done by talented performers. The girls danced around the May Pole. Bouncey Joe on the trampoline. The program, lasting several hours, was highlighted by the long-awaited crowning of the May Queen. Her identity was kept secret until the moment of her crowning. The students an- xiously awaited the selection of the queen as the president of the class moved the silver crown from one lovely head to another. The one whom the crown fitted per- fectly was a popular senior, Irene Verhitski. She took her place as the head of the court to reign as Queen of the May, 1957. Conference C'laampionA ?oot6all The year 1957, is one that will be remembered for a long time in the hearts of each Coughlin football fan. For the second straight year, Cough- lin repeated as Wyoming Valley Football champs. Coach joe Peel's Crusaders started the season off with a defeat at the hands of the Plains Red Raid- ers by a score of 7 to 0. The game was nip-and- tuck with both teams fighting hard. Ioe Perkow- ski did most of Coughlin's work but had to leave the game late in the third quarter because of a leg injury. But, after the first game, Coughlin became alive and scored l93 points in the next seven games. As the season moved along, Coughlin and Kingston shaped up to be the two powers, and on Thanksgiving day the championship would be de- cided. The turkey day crowd got its money's worth as the two powers battled to a scoreless tie. Both teams played a hard gameg and, as a result of the tie, Coughlin was awarded the title. During the season, Coughlin was lead by Tiger Ioe Perkowski who scored 10 touchdowns and was ninety-two named the most valuable player of the year. He was also named on the All-Star, All--Scholastic, and top 33 in the state. He broke the all time scoring record in the Wyoming Valley Conference. Along with Joe, Big Bob Mitchell was also named to the All-Scholastic Team. Bob Ankudovich was voted a member of the All-Star Team. Iohn Decker, one of Coughlin,s breakaway backs, was given honorable mention on many of these teams because of his outstanding work. The East VVest game is the battle between the teams on the east side of the Susquehanna River and the teams on the west. This game is played in August, and representing Coughlin will be Mike Kozemko, Bob Mitchell, Bob Ankudovieh, Mike Sralik, Ioe Perkowski, Charles Grzezdzinski, and Iohn Decker. Returning next year are Lyons, Dale, Terpak, Dechman, Krum, and Petroski. We wish these boys the best of luck, and we all hope that Coach joe Peel,s Crusaders will bring home another championship. Leading the team were Don Smacher and Ron Barovich at 95 and lO3 lbs., respectively. Smaeher,s first year at varsity was Very successful as he won l3 matches of which ll were won by pins. Some of the equipment used in Coughlinis new gym are the trampolene, spring board, horses, parallel bar, high bar, flying rings, and a variety of mats used for tumbling. The boys have a chance to show their stuff to the whole school on May Day. They may also tour other schools and show them what feats can be accomplished outside of classes. Most of the practicing is done on the boys, extra time. The team is open to any boy in the school who can handle himself on any one of the apparatuses mentioned above. Butch Thomas and Red Russell handle the high bar and the ropes, and Artie Poole and Rich Iones startled the crowd on the parallel bar. Meanwhile Toe Sehiel and Ron Barovich kept the fans in good humor with their perform- ances on the trampolene. Mike is one of the best pole vaulters that ever came out of C.H.S. Last year he took first place in the District Track Meet and did a good job in the State Finals. As the season closed in '57, Mike was vaulting close to twelve feet. But, Mike broke his arm during football season this year and whether the vaulting record might have been broken will never be known. Dombek hurls the javelin. During the season, Coughlin came up with some good runners. Paul Krum and Bernie Dech- man led the team and won many events in the mile and half-mile relays. Meanwhile, Paul Gib- bons and Charles Sahayda kept points coming in the high and low hurdles. Larry Dombek, Lee Lyons, Jim Doyle, and Iohn Makaravitz led the team in the field events.
