It was a season of surprises and upsetsg and, the Crusaders, under the expert guidance of their coach, Mr. Peel, played an interesting season. The most outstanding game was played against an undefeated GJ-LR. Eleven. The Red and Blue entered this contest as the underdogs. However, a determined backfield and an unflinching line brought the crowds to their feet cheering as the Coughlin Squad took command early in the game and through constant plugging toppled the Grenadiers to the tune of 20 to 7. Of the nine games which were scheduled for the Red and Blue in the Wyoming Valley Conference, five end- ed in our favor. This percentage entitled the Crusaders to third place in the Valley Conference listings. The city title broke in a three-way split. Sam Carpenter, one of Coughlin's outstanding line- men, represented Coughlin on the All-Scholastic Foot- ball Team. This team is chosen by prominent figures in the local sports world. The members of this team are chosen for their ability and are picked from all schools in the Valley Conference. We Want to thank the team for their fine work and Wish them and their coaches an equally successful Season next year. First row lleft to ri-ghtlz Linker, M. All these girls are members of Cough- lin's Y-Teens. They share many experiences and activities during the years. Social func- tions are also included in their program of activities, The annual weiner roast was the first major event of the year, Perhaps the gayest and most talked-of social events of the year are the proms, At Christ- mas, Irem Temple was filled with Y-Teens in their lovely gowns with their beaux. And, in May, there was the Spring prom. Such excite- ment is never seen as that which fills the weeks before the Y-Teens' prom. Yes, the Y-Teens sponsor Coughlin High Schools proms, and its members can often be heard whispering among themselves, 'Did you ask him yet? or, Did he say yes? Since most of Coughlin's junior and senior girls join this active organization, Miss Dixon, the club adviser, has quite a job on her hands. For, not only do the Y-Teens sponsor social Y-Teens functions, but they give the members oppor- tunities to share many profitable experiences. For instance, at Christmas time, the girls gave a party for underprivileged children, and, later in the year, they joined with Y-Teens all over the world in sending gifts to the Orient. A Mid-Winter Conference preceded the Spring prom. The conference was a three-day event held at the local Y.W,C.A. To this con- ference Coughlin sent eight delegates who represented Coughlin Y-Teens well, Fin!! row fleft to riqhtli Babula, Chronowski, Brennan, Conwell, Olsakowski, Pyatt, Nielsen, Minemier, Lesko, Kutney, Brown Almasie, Clunf-, Czarnota Second row: Carey, Gammaitoni, Horny, Iackiewicz, Brandt, Budzyn, Albrecht, Baliit, Adami- tis, Bone, George, Chase, Cvurf-wich, Cooper, Danilack, Brozinslci. Some ot the programs included: Sleepy-Time Time, A'Young Abe Lincoln, St Patrick, 'Cfood Manners, and a most wonderful May Day programs. Some ot the members ot the Stuf dent Council have read the Honor Roll in chapel, so everyone could hear who our bril- liant students were. Summing up all our pro- grams they contained singing, dancing, and instrumental music. Everyones knees shook, and some thought they could not go through with it, but, they did, and we appreciate their courage to go on. The teachers have spent time, effort, and put in hard work to prepare these programs tor us. We are very much interested in seeing the seventh and eighth grades put on programs in chapel, and hope they will continue. We enjoyed them very much and are glad to know that We have such splendid talent in our Iunior High School pupils. Twist? The seventh and eighth grades think of us as the Little Big Bosses of the Iunior High--but the upper classmen never think about us. All joking aside, we're a serious group of performers, athletes, and scholars. This is evidenced by the many activities in which we participate, To mention a few of the activities we enioy- ed most and it's hard to do, for there were so many good onesfthere was the l-lallowe'en Party, the Iuriior Majorettes, the lunior High Orchestra, and Freshman Assembly. The amount we can do is pretty well limited, but members of our class represented us in all the sports. We think that in the next few years we ought to have top teams. As scholars we take our work seriously knowing that the right combination of work and play will help make us to be better school citizens. There isn't much more we can do, but wait till our chance comes to show the Senior High just what we're made ofe-ethen they better hold on to their laurels. This ring signifies much more than graduation from high school, It means that we at Coughlin hope that you will carry through life the many lessons you have learned while here. If you know the meaning of honesty, if you cherish the charm of courtesy, and if you know and practice the Golden Rule, you indeed have the right to wear the ring of Coughlin High School, As you leave Coughlin High School and start your journey through life, you will find many guideposts along the way. The decisions you make as you come to these crossroads will determine your way of life. Your life will be a symbol to others as it bespeaks good or evil, honesty or dishonesty, fairness or injustice on your part. We, at Coughlin, trust you will make decisions that will give you a richer life, many friends, and many happy and joyous years. Always remember that actions speak louder than words , and you will, as graduates of Coughlin, make your actions reflect the pride that Coughlin High School has in its graduates. Because of its great importance, a new tradition has been established at Coughling that is, National Honor Society Day. One day is set aside during each school year to honor the members of this society. A student assembly is held at which its mem- bers are awarded pins, and an interesting program is presentedg the society members take part. The National Honor Society has been a tradition at Coughlin High School for many years, since l92-4g and, the Class of 1954 is both pleased and proud of its representation in this national organization, We hope that membership in this society will serve as an incentive to the Class of l955 and to all of the classes to follow them. The emblem which is pictured above is very significant. The keystone shows the way virtue holds our education firm and true to life's purposes. The flaming torch symbolizes our purpose: to bring forward the light of truth. The class rings! Seniors left their class rooms and hurried to the office- thriled that, at last, the rings would actually be theirs. The class ring is the symbol of all that is best in school life-the symbol of the successful completion of twelve school years of work and play. lt is worn with great pride. The ring has no great intrinsic value, but that which it symbolizes is beyond price. Its simple'design represents all the fine traditions of our school. All the traditions of good scholarship, the development of youthful leadership, fine character, acceptance of responsibility, and willingness to serve the school. It also represents a fine relationship between students and faculty. We are proud to wear this ring, as seniors, and we shall continue to realize its importance as a symbol after graduation. It becomes a bond between those who graduate this year and all those others who have worn their class rings with pride-and those who will wear such rings in the future. Each time we seniors look at our rings we will be reminded of care- free school days that were filled with fair dreams. All our rings will be the symbols of all good things upon which we hope to model our lives. 6 five FX ADMINISTRATION Board of Education- Supervisors-Faculty- Maintenance CLASSES National Honor Society- Senior C1ass-Hornerooms- Candids ACTIVITIES Pub1ications-Outing- Senior P1ay-Clubs- Music SPORTS Footba1l-BasketbaI1- Wrestling-Basebal1-Track- Girls' Sports-Swimming .- 7716 Wrezkiflh 1954 Volume XXXI JA ' lanes H.C9ughlig Wilkes-Bdiireg Member of N.
