four Lessons in Leadership The whole is equal to the sum of all its parts - so goes the theorem. ln this book, we have recorded the events of a school year, and it is our intention to prove that all phases of school life are contributing factors to the development and continuance of the school--and that no one factor is more essential to the life of the school than in good leadership. Youth is malleable, and the influences exerted dur- ing the formative high school years are of tremendous force and incalculable value. The student must be led to make wise choices, to exercise good judgment, to ac- quire the knowledge necessary for the performance of his future life's Work. Here at Coughlin, We have been fortunate in our principal and faculty. From them we have had Wise and constructive leadership. Because of this high quality of leadership, We have learned to know the good that comes from instruction. In the democratic society of a public high school L55,53-,45-,g.i,',fga5, every student finds the joy of companionship with those of his own generation. And, as the four years of the high school cycle turn, out of all the companions of joyful school days, there appear, sometimes as if by magic, persons qualified to fulfill the position when the need for leadership arises. From the school group, there come-the class officers, the club president, the athlete, the actor, the editor, and all the persons who contribute their share of young strength and enthusiasm, intelligence and humor to the life of the school. These young people exemplify all that is best in life. For example, the athlete has learned to value the game beyond the prize, only because his leaders have taught and personified good sportsmanship, The lessons in leadership have been many, and well taught.
