Youth is malleable, and the influences exerted dur- ing the formative high school years are of tremendous force and incalculable value. The student must be led to make wise choices, to exercise good judgment, to ac- quire the knowledge necessary for the performance of his future life's Work. Here at Coughlin, We have been fortunate in our principal and faculty. From them we have had Wise and constructive leadership. Because of this high quality of leadership, We have learned to know the good that comes from instruction. In the democratic society of a public high school L55,53-,45-,g.i,',fga5, every student finds the joy of companionship with those of his own generation. And, as the four years of the high school cycle turn, out of all the companions of joyful school days, there appear, sometimes as if by magic, persons qualified to fulfill the position when the need for leadership arises. From the school group, there come-the class officers, the club president, the athlete, the actor, the editor, and all the persons who contribute their share of young strength and enthusiasm, intelligence and humor to the life of the school. These young people exemplify all that is best in life. For example, the athlete has learned to value the game beyond the prize, only because his leaders have taught and personified good sportsmanship, The lessons in leadership have been many, and well taught. Lessons in leadership! Each page and each picture is visible proof of our theme. We hope that We have thus succeeded in making the l952 Breidlin a memorable experience for everyone. X Q-rf . First, there was Mr. Iacob P. Breidinger, beloved of many generations of Coughlin students whose Wise counsel was an inspiration to every student who knew him. Then, as Mr. Breidinger's years as principal drew to a close, by his side there appeared another great man who was to take his place. In nineteen thirty-two, Mr. Iohn H. Super be- came principal. It was with a deep sense of loss that we saw Mr. Super retire in Iune, nineteen fifty-one. Each of our lives was enriched by this man who made education his life's work. In September of nineteen-fifty-one Mr. Francis T. Truscott became principal of Coughlin High Schoolg and, for the third time we have been unusually fortu- nate in our principal. During this past year Mr. Truscott has won the admiration and respect of the faculty and students. We have learned to seek his ' wise counsel and guidance. We have been deeply impressed by his friendliness, sincerity, and courtesy. With the hope that our appreciation of his leadership might be expressed more fully by some outward evidence, we, the class of ninetee fifty-two, as at symbol and token of our ap- preciation for his earnest en- deavors to help make our senior years a memorable one, do re- spectfully dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Francis T. Truscott. 3-I-:. if-i. .-.:,:,-.4:-:-:.:.- :.-.ne-214:-mf,f-.-'.-r.-.1.:.-.1 a.:--::,:.-.--2-E-I-.rf..f-r-1.1-rf-f 7 I' eight Aomnmuswmmom .--u A ' 'F -. ,,.f.1 - -1 .-I-I, , v. , ., . .N I. You and your parents have dreamed of the day when you would graduate from high school. But, since all good things come to those who wait, your day of realization has come. We have tried in Coughlin to point out to you those things that will count most as you travel through life. If you have learned that honesty, courtesy, and character are the important factors, we shall feel that we have accomplished our purpose. You will always be faced by a conflict between good and evil. Have the courage always to do what is right, and your life will be of benefit to yourself and your community. Young people of today are confronted with many ques- tions. Are We going to have another war? Shall I continue my education? ls it possible to plan my future? I wish I could answer those questions for you. But I do hope, whatever you decide your future will be, that you won't lose faith in yourself, your country, your God. Our country has gone through many crisesg and, mainly, because of the faith of our young people, it has always passed them safely. With your continued faith and confidence, I know we shall be able to solve our present problems and return to normal living. Now the time has come for you to go your various Ways in life. For some of you graduation will mean the end of your formal education. Others will go on to a more advanced phase. You all have been most fortunate in your high school years. Your lives have been enriched through your contact with a man of unusual educational stature-Mr. I. H. Super. His fine influ- ence will always be a source of inspiration to you. By Eleanor Kusyk '52 in X 041 Tune: I'll Walk Alone Dear School, to you To teachers, too, We bid adieu- We say adieu- And our hearts fill with sadness, Singing praises forever- F or, the warmth and the gladness For the guidance you render, That you give we must leave- And the knowledge you share- Yet smile, not grieve. A gem, so rare. And, all of these rnem'ries We'll cherish through years, Though time will make us old. The fun that we had, Through all of these days, Will make us sigh For days gone by. The future calls Us, one and all- Chosen paths we must follow We'll not be here tomorrow, Dear Friends. Farewell! twenty-three CHARLES 1-'ERNNAND ACORE. S. QS S. Memorial, Col- lege Preparatory. The Red and Blue were in command through most of the thrilling contest. ln the next outing the Coughlinites subdued the Luzerne Lions by a 28 to 13 count. Ed Iohnson scored three TD's in the wild contest. The Plymouth Indians staged a goal line stand to deprive the Red and Blue of their third straight victory as the two elevens battled to a scoreless tie. Newport High School handed the Coughlin- ites their second straight draw when they battled the Red and Blue eleven to a 6 to 6 tie. Both had troubles in getting any kind of an offensive attack clicking. The Red and Blue next traveled to Nanticoke where they routed the home forces by a 21 to 0 score. Degnan, Gryczko, and Iohnson made long gains throughout the game. After that win, the Crusaders returned home to begin their quest for the City Championship. However, the Meyers Mohawks wrecked the Red and Blue's hopes when they scored a 13 to 6 upset . A heavy rain hampered most of the offensive play, as the Coughlin Crusaders and G. A. R. Grenadiers played to a 6 to 6 tie before about 4,000 drenched fans. All the scoring was done in the first half. This tie ended the Red and Blue's hope for a city championship. ln what many considered the hardest fought game of the season, the Coughlinites scored a 14 to 12 upset victory over the powerful Larksville Green Wave. The Red and Blue, sparked by the passing of Ioe Degnan, twice came from behind to win this contest. Two Degnan passes to Cashmere accounted for the margin of victory. On Thanksgiving Day, the Red and Blue end- ed their 1951 foot-ball season by whipping their rivals from Kingston by a 14 to 6 score. Ten seniors played their last game for C. H. S., as the Red and Blue climaxed a successful season. .svn-5 - K K A lt A .N.j3i:l.lr!,Z.Q'nP,'f7 ,- Tit. 5311.-'iimitfz-. 4H:...f' ' .'f: f' X F5 giggq Q Mghqgrr, , , 1: if , fn vi : gf'f'f'i'i-flk .,. The outstanding accomplishment of the l95l- 52 Crusaders was their 64 to 62 victory over the strong Hazleton Mountaineers. This victory was the first scored by the Coughlinites in their series with the Mountaineers. Although the Bed and Blue failed to score a victory in the Wyoming Valley League, they always gave a good account of themselves. ln fact, most of the contests were usually decided in the last quarter of this game. G. A. R, Nanticoke, Hanover, Berwick, New- port, and Meyers all scored victories over the Crusaders in the final two minutes of play. Yes! The Crusaders were in the thick of the cham- pionship race until the final game of the sea- son when they suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of G. A. R., thus giving the cham- pionship to Hanover. Coughlin's 1952 team was built around such veterans as Baran, who will captain the team, and other outstanding players as: Featherstone, Degnan, Kraynanski, and Ruddy. Coughlin started out the 1952 season at a terrific speed breezing by Newport with the score of 11 to 4. Leonard received credit for the win as he had complete control over the Newport team throughout the game. Batting star for the Coughlin team was Kraynanski who had three hits in four turns at bat, in- cluding two doubles. Newport, at no time, threatened. The final score was-Coughlin ll, Newport 4. In the opening game in the Wyoming Valley League, Coughlin opened against Meyers and was defeated by the score of 6 to 3. Wychock pitched an excellent game, but the team just couldn't seem to get their batting-eye and dropped the game by the final score of 6 to 3. In the second game the Crusaders traveled to Hanover where they were handed a decisive set-back at the hands of last year's champions, by the convincing score of 8 to U. Wychock and the boys couldn't get moving, and the boys from Hanover had their batting eyes with them throughout the entire game. In a game played at the Pine Ridge dia- mond, Coughlin gained a first win in league competition by the score of 9 to 1. Leonard was complete master of the game throughout and received good support from the rest of the team. The outstanding hitter was Degnan who had a triple. The final score was Coughlin 9, Kingston l. Coughlin's season is coming to a close and many seniors are now playing the final game for their Alma Mater. Among those who are playing the last game are: I.
