The things We learn are constantly build- ing in us ideals, characteristics, and principles which will affect our whole lives, therefore We have chosen building as our theme. Before a structure is built, there must be a design or plan for it. Only when this plan is perfected is the actual building begun. There are many different things that go into a building-materials such as bricks, cement, Wood, nails, and glass, and also the abstract but important things such as Work, patience, and the pride of the Workman in the symmetrical beauty of the finished structure. Learning can be compared to building in all these Ways. The adminis- tration and faculty members plan classes and Ways of teaching them that are most productive. The building takes place in the classroom, in the halls, and at the extra-curricular activities. The student learns not only the prin- ciples of learning but also forms the basis of his characteristic traits. He 'lil-'nds his ability to get along with other people, to co-operate with his fellow-Workers, and to contribute his individual accomplishments for the good of his community. Shuga, Eustice, Teslichlco. Coughlin opened the l950 track campaign at Kirby Park with an 86 to 4l rout of their arch rival, Kingston. Cyrana in the l00, Price in the mile, Kutney in the 220, 440 and the broad jump, and Dysleski and Mahal in the shot put and low hurdles, respectively, showed the way. The high man for Coughlin was Kutney with l5 points on his three first places. lt was a case of experience and inexperi- ence as Coughlin humbled Hanover by a ring- ing 108 to 2l count. The Hawkeyes were never in the meet, and after C. H. S. took the first three places in the high hurdles, there was no contest. Coughlin had no trouble with Meyers as they triumphed with ease by an 89 to 38 count. The boys from South Wilkes-Barre were no match for Ioe Peel's undefeated tracksters. Mahal took the hurdles, Kutney the broad jump, 220, and 4405 and Prico, Kwak, and Monico swept the mile, shot put, and 880 to help pile up the points. lt is interesting to note that Coughlin has not lost a dual meet in four years. Seniors who are making their last showing in the scholastic sports field are: Price, Monico, Mahal, Dysleski, Kwak, Cyrana, Gasper, Lehet, Mosley, and Tereshinski. 1949 TRACK SCORES 1950 TRACK SCORES District 2 oi PIAA April 26 May 21 Coughlin .... ,,,., 86 Dunmore ..... ,,,, . 46 Kingston A 41 Scranton Centrcd . . 41 May 3 Kingston A nulunv H H .37 Coughhn . ....,.,,, .,., . . . 106 Coughhn , . .... .. , 36 Hanover ' 21 May 10 City Meet Coughhn .. ......... 89 May 25 Meyers .....,. .,r.,.. ..., ..,... . . 3 8 Coughhn .,,,, .. ..r.. ........ . ,.,.,,, 4 4 1X3 May 16 G. Kutney on the leap Over we go fifty-seven Girls Ver Active Spread Eager and active, the girls ot Coughlin are all good sports, especially those who partici- pate in sports. The newly organized girls' Swimming Club has made a great hit with the girls. Iunior girls applied for admission but as there were so many girls asking, preference was given to the seniors. Every Monday after school, they held their weekly meet at Meyers High School and had a great time swimming in the Meyers pool. The club is under the excellent leader- ship ot Miss Dorothy Smith. Girls' gym classes are ottered opportunities to join in all types of sports and related ac- lilty eight Stretch tivities: modern dancing in combination with the boys' gym classes, basketball, volleyball, deck tennis, baseball drill to music, and also relay races. Next year the plan is to resume all former girl sports schedules and activities. Rumors have been going around concerning a Boots and Saddle Club for girls. It has not been formed as yet, but it will probably be in tull swing next year. This year, supervised by Mr. Hen- sley, the boys assembled their cheers and music with the necessary routines into a pep booklet and stenciled the sweaters they wore at basketball games. An additional sight at football games is, of course, the Majorettes. The girls make a pretty picture in their White outfits, high plumed hats and military boots. At every football game the Majorettes can be seen at the head of the band, twirling their silver batons and cheering the boys on to victory. First Row fleft to right: Podgorski. Of course it wasn't a new building or that longfawaited football field, but every day they could see the newest members of C. H. S,, the seventh and eighth grade stu- dents. They occupy homerooms in the Union Street Building and the Old Building. Their first year at Coughlin was probably a little hard to get used to. The older students, in getting acquainted with them, lcidded tliem a lot just as they did the freshmen. Undaunt- ed, these members of the lunior High went on Tfith their studies' and worked their way into the curriculum and activities until it seemed as though they had always been there. Tho seventh and eighth grades have indeed proved themselves worthy additions to Coughlin High Schools student body. Farewell to the Class ol 1950 When we consider the theme of this issue of the Breidlin, Education is Building, we must think of education as something more than schooling. lt must include everything that you have learned since your birth, from your parents, your associates, your church, as well as from every experience that has touched you. All these things have built you into the person that you are today. Your ability to learn from these experiences shows your character quite truly. For the highest type of human being is one who gains most from his own experience and from those of other people. From both these he learns what to do and what to avoid doing. When a similar circumstance occurs later on, he is at once conscious that this is something to be sought after or avoided. And now that you have reached a certain definite goal in your life span and education-your graduation from high school-it is fitting that you take time to consider where you are, for your growth and development has by no means stopped. We hope that for all of you during these formative years only a foundation has been laid-that the structure of your lives will be so large that the seventeen or eighteen years that have passed have only been sufficient to start the building and that you are going to keep placing a much larger edifice on what you have built so far. So, Seniors, as we bid you farewell, your teachers join me in hoping that we have contributed something towards the building of the lives that you are erecting so that they will be large ones, adorned with many pleasant experiences and with what we call the finer things-lives that are of great service to society, full of success and happiness.
