Mr. John Sariehs is serving with the navyg Mr. Chester Hine and Mr. Hobson Zerbe with the army. We at home have done our part by contributing all of our facilities to the advancement of the 'war effort. DVar training classes and e.1'tra-curricular activities are jvreparing our students for better service to their country. By fvurchaising Vlfar Bonds aud Stamps we have also aided our government in financing the war. llfith all these war activities our school has changed greatly but has been of greater benefit than ever. Among these were Pre-F light Aeronautics. taught by Mr. West and Mr. Hensley: Automotive Mechanics. by Mr. Pendergast: and International Morse Code, by Mr. Connor. These subiects deal with the fundamentals basic to further training and are useful to those people going into the serv- ice. Out of every one hundred men inducted, sixty-three are assigned to specialized training. Those who know fundamentals of electricity, auto mechanics, and radio are essential to the Army programs. The auto mechanics course included sixty hours of theory and one hun- dred and twenty hours of practical work. The automobile which was dismantled was con- tributed by the Iunior Chamber of Commerce. The letters contain news of the school and community, sub- jects the boys always like to hear about. Mr. Super does the actual writing: mimeoqraphing and mailing are handled by a committee of five. CPage 531. GH it 1+ -11. -L -'L AIR-MINDEDNESS I The above is a typical air raid drill which is held at least once a month. The students are all ready to evacuate. The students below are surveying model planes, the finished products of many hours of hard work. Each plane is exact in its proportions as required by the government. Proper food and its preparation are stressed as the girls learn the essentials of planning, preparing, serving, and, yes, even cleaning up. The above picture and the lower one on the next page, show the girls taking part in the Nutrition Exhibition. A HELPING l-LZXND C Coughlin's contribution in answer to an appeal for old clothing for poor children in Kentucky and for the Children's Federation in New York is shown in the picture above. Clothes given were in excellent condition: many were new. FANECK TUNE- As Time Goes By There comes a time when high school days Must fade into a mem'ry: These days so bright and carefree Bring thoughts so very happy. And although we say farewell now, Leave fair and honored halls. As thy portals open wide And we fare forth to seek new worlds. One truth burns in our loyal hearts- No use now to deny- The Class of '43 will e'er Remember Coughlin High. 'Y CHORUS Our schooldays now are through- a fond goodbye to you. v A teardrop dims our eye: We'll always cherish days we've spent At Coughlin High. The friendships that we've made will never, never fade As future years go by. Our hearts will always linger here In Coughlin High. Each happy moment. not a thought of care. Ioys that are boundless fade into the air: Visions so clear of times we used to share Now dim before our eyes. In days that lie before us, Reflections will inspire us With memories that tie - Our hearts with all the days of gladness At Couqhlin High. Y They Shall Have Music Wherever They GO A Cappella Choir The A Cappella Choir. made up of seventy- two, members. is continuously gaining praise and renown. The choir was well-received at performances for Parents' Night, the Kiwanis Club. the Y's Men's Club. the Community Sing. the Quota Club. and the Home Economics Con- vention. ln March the choir gave a perform- ance lor the Mothers of Servicemen. The high- light of the musical year was the concert given in May with the Senior Select Chorus. All these activities were made possible by the complete cooperation and faithful practice of the mem- bers under direction of Miss M. Arline Weiss. Senior Select Chorus Most important event on the calendar of the Senior Select Chorus was the concert they gave in May. with the cooperation of the A Cappella Choir. Their part of the concert was composed entirely of famous Victor Herbert tunes. including Kiss In The Dark. Romany Life. Thine Alone, and Italian Street Song. Solo parts were sung by George Zeisner. Wil- fred Feldman, Grace Tierney, Mary lean Kipp, Dolores Kresge. Frank Considine. and lack Walsh. Clever dramatizations of some of the songs added to the pleasure of the perform- ance. Miss M. Arline Weiss is director. Band Coughlin's sixty-five piece band is always eagerly awaited by the spectators at football games. Under the direction of Mr. Paul B. Lewis. they present unique formations and drills and play their collection of fight songs. Their activities. however. do not stop when foot- ball season ends. This year they have made frequent appearances at honor roll dedications. Red Cross meetings, bond rallies. and parades. Besides they gave their annual concert at the Varieties and played for departing Coughlin inductees. Neither rain nor sleet. or cold nor heat. prevented the members from playing. y eight Varsity Orchestra Any morning about 8:25. anyone near the auditorium can hear the Varsity Orchestra tuning up for their daily chapel appearance. At 8:30 the players are off under the direction of Mr. P. B. Lewis. At rehearsals every Wed- nesday, they try to prove that practice makes perfect. The Varsity is always on hand for the Senior Play. Christmas Play, and other school presentations. They contributed to the success of Minstrels by their playing. They also played for Class Day and concluded their services for the year with an excellent performance at Commencement. Reserve and Freshman Orchestras The iumping-off place to the Varsity is the Reserve Orchestra. This group, under the leadership of Mr. Francis Truscott. practices each Tuesday for their chapel programs. the music varying from snappy marches and smooth waltzes to operatic and symphonic gems. But newcomers to Coughlin are not for- gotten either. The Freshman Orchestra is com- posed of freshman who hope to advance to the Varsity. Led by Mrs. Nan Walker Connaugh- ton. this orchestra plays for the Freshman Assemblies. After polishing up their best numbers, they present a chapel program. Geography Club The Geography Club, under the direction of Mr. Hensley, is one of the most popular clubs this year. During the meetings. there are speakers on interesting places of the world. There were very interesting films on all parts of the world and one especially enioyed by the club was the one on the tour of India. which is so timely now that our soldiers are stationed there. On another occasion. Mr. Super spoke and showed slide films on his tour of Canada and parts of Europe. Some- times the club held quizzes and games on cur- rent events and these were always enioyed. r:. Members of this talented group are the cynosure oi the school students for there is scarcely an enter- tainment in which they do not participate. Almost every member of Masquers has taken part in some public entertainment. Short plays. pantomines, and other performances, under the guidance oi Miss Myvanwy Williams, aid considerably in the preparation for Christmas plays, Varieties and other shows. The most outstanding contribution of the Masquers is its presentation of the Senior Play. The Speakers' Club The Speakers' Club, an organization oi seniors with Miss Williams as adviser, meets semi-monthly. The club's aim is to aid mem- bers in improving diction, poise, and self- reliance. Every year each member delivers short campaign speeches for the Iouma1 and Breidlin . In preparation the club collectively discusses the problems of the assignment. Often members address the school assembly on anniversaries. Much praise is due to Miss Williams and the cast for a fine performance. Due to the lack oi small boys in the school, the cast included two boys irom North Street School. They did a grand iob and were a big asset. Lobbying For The-ir Hobbies Art Club The Art Club. under the direction oi Miss Florence Evans, has done much ior the school. The members have made posters for all school aflairs. They have helped in decorating the building at Christmas time for years. They decorated toys for the Iunior Red Cross to distribute to needy children. They helped make one thousand favors and crossword puzzle books which were sent to a hospital in Ireland. At meetings members of the club give talks on art subiects. This year they took a trip through the Record plant. At another meeting winning contestants in a quiz on the Fa:mous American Series received stamps. Another interesting subiect consider- ed was perforations and water marks. Club members saw water marks in the form of stars. crescents. and turtles. Homemakers' Club Making scrap books tor soldiers was one of the war activities oi the Homemakers' Club. but learning how to look after home problems in wartime was probably their most important. The main social event for these girls was the Christmas party at which they exchanged ten- cent gifts. Also during the Christmas season they made and sent individual boxes oi cookies to the Sutton Home. As one of their proiects, the girls visited the cafeteria and kitchen of Percy A. Hi-Y Every two weeks the echo of a gavel, re- sounding through the Home Roome of the Y. M. C. A., has announced the opening of a meeting of Hi-Y. The members, under the leadership of Mr. Anthony Ruddy. have engaged in varied activities. Whenever possible, they had graduates who are in the armed forces give short talks. One evening they debated the important question, Should India Be Given Full Dominion Status? with members of the Scholastic Club of the Y. M. H. A. They formed a basketball team. They also raised funds for sending letters to soldiers, sailors, and marines. Girl Reserves Girl Reserves, which is affiliated with the Y. W. C. A.. has for its purpose, The building of a fellowship of women and girls devoted to the task of realizing in our common life those ideals of personal and social living to which we are committed by our faith as Christians. Miss Iule Prisbek is the adviser. Among the war activities of the group was the giving of ten dollars and a pack of cigarettes from each member to the U. S. O. There were also many social activities, ranging from scavenger hunts to dances. from skating parties to Friendship Banquets. The French Club The French Club. which was organized by Miss Toohey some years ago, is probably one of the oldest groups in the school. Made up of those French students who have a grade of B or better, it is also one of the most popular. The meetings. held on an average ol once every three weeks, are definitely intended to increase the members' knowledge of the French language. Any French Club member, for in- stance, understands that puzzling point of eti- quette, the difference between service a la carte and table d'hote. Miss Elizabeth McHugh is the adviser. The German Club Strains of Ach, Du Lieber Augustine, need not alann anyone passing the Old Building. The Deutscher Verein, which meets on alter- nate Wednesdays, always includes the lusty singing of folk songs as part of the program. This sixteen-year-old club is open to all upper- classmen who maintain a high average in German. lts purpose is to instill in members a genuine knowledge of and respect for Ger- man culture and tradition, according to Mr. E. M. Warmkessel, the adviser. For this reason the quizzes, songs, and games deal with the literature, art. and music of Germany. Minstrels-Amateurs The 1942-43 season found the Minstrels and Amateurs combined for one gala event. It had as its theme The American Patrol. The cast was clad in the uniforms of the different branches of service. Included in these were the Army, Navy, Marines, WAAC's, Red Cross Nurses, and Canteen Workers. The first half of the evening was a hilarious minstrel show. The second half was the Amateur part in which some of the minstrel cast re-appeared. The show was witnessed by a capacity crowd. In the second tilt with Meyers, a last- period surge by the Mohawks enabled them to win by a large margin. In another hard- fought contest the Red and Blue finally snap- ped its seven-game losing streak by nipping the Hanover outfit 33-32. The 1943 baseball season has rolled around, and once again Coughlin has come up with a tine crop ot ball players. Tony Ruddy has taken over the reins as head coach and the team seems headed for another fine season. The Coughlin nine, captained by Charlie fmistranski. opened its season against Meyers and emerged with a l-0 triumph. Carl Lock- man twirled the four hit shutout, while Russ Crispell broke up the game by singling home Ed Zapotoczny with the winning run in the last inning. In an extra inning ball game, the Coughlinites defeated the Nanticoke nine by a 3-l score. Ray Gerko limited the losers to lcur hits and an unearned run in racking up the win. With two out in the extra inning, Tippy Kozich sandwiched a double between singles by Zapotoczny and Crispell to provide the winning margin. Coming from behind, the Coughlin ball club battled its way on to a 9-6 victory over GAR. The home team hammered at three GAR pitchers and finally put the game on ice by scoring 3 runs in the sixth inning. Danny Dougalas and Russ Crispell tea- tured in the hitting department, the former driv- ing in three runs with a triple and single, while the latter poled out three one-baggers. For this reason a strenuous wartime physical fitness program was in- augurated last autumn at Coughlin. All boys who would reach their seventeenth birthday sometime before the end of the present school year were required to par- ticipate in this program. Throughout the winter months the boys worked out in the gym, using a set oi climbing ropes and horizontal bar along with calisthenics. to develop themselves. With the coming oi spring and warm weather, the classes were R353 shifted to the field, adioining the school. Under the direction of Mr. Iames Payne. these fellows have developed into harden- ed athletes. Among the different pieces of apparatus used in the field are the scaling wall, the horizontal bar, and the hurdle. Another feature of this program was the formation of a swimming club which is open to all senior boys who are non-swim- mers. Each week they travel down to Meyers where they receive competent in- struction in the art of swimming. Recently these fellows participated in several meets of the three city high schools and they did a very good iob in these competitions. HOW ABOUT A TUMBLE? GET 'EM UP!
