With genuine pride we dedicate this book to a rnan of such World-renown, Whose flawless record in the service of his country resulted in his appointment as Chief of Naval Operations two years ago and as Commander of U. S. Naval Forces Operating in European Waters in 1942. V6 Six In reply refer to Initials and No. Op-10-MD NAVY DEPARTMENT OFFICE or THE CHIEF or NAVAL OPERATTONS WASHINGTON March 16 , l9L+2 Dear Mr. Graham: Of course I am more than willing and feel highly honored that you should even think of dedicating your Year Book to me.. Nothing goes home quite so much as things from home, and I am really deeply touched that you should desire to do this. Thoughts come thick and fast when I think of the Hilkes- Barre High School and I can jump back over the years as though it were yesterday - to the foundation I obtained Hin my teensu, not only from books but more particularly in character building from the associations with the teaching staff and with classmates, I wish every student could realize while he is at school, from the lower grades all the way up, that it is what he does today which fits him and her for tomorrow. So often we are prone to think overmuch of the future and what we want to do and what we want to be, to the obscurement of the realization that life begins each morn- ing and it is the way we concentrate on the tasks of today, no matter how inconspicuous, that determines what we will do and what we will be tomorrow. I believe it was old Rip used to say - Hwell, I won't count when we have our lapses, are prone this oneH, but our inner makeup is is recording it and registering it character and our future. Van Winkle who, in his drinking, this one.H In a measure we all, to say - Hwell, we won't count counting it and our entire fabric and chalking it up against our If I could leave a thought in the year book which I could hope would be a lasting one, it would be that it is today that counts and it was well expressed by William Dewitt Hyde who stated: WTO worry about tomorrow is to fail of devotion to the tasks of today and so to spoil both days.H And again as expressed so beautifully by - WToday well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope.N I might add one more - NThere is no substitute for hard work and common sense.H My sincerest good wishes to you all. Mr. J. W. Graham Coughlin High School Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania Seien Eight Contents Dedication - Foreword - - - Iames M. Coughlin Presentation - Administration - - Faculty - - Mr. Super's Message Senior Class ------- The pictures appearing on the Senior Pages were taken at the Senior-Iunior Outing of Iune 5, 1941. Some were taken on the train to New York, and the others were taken while on the boat, going up the Hudson River to West Point. Captions were avoided in view of the flag layout. Senior Class Song - - Under-classes School Life - Board of Publications Athletics - - Index to Advertisers - The composite picture on the division pages was made in part from an Official U. S. Navy Photograph Foreword CHOOL life in the past year has been anything but normal. Members of this year's graduating class will look back on their senior year as one which saw many changes in the usual routine though fore- most in their memories will be that day in the midst of the term when hostilities began between the United States and the Axis nations. The Breidlin, in its capacity as a complete record of the year, will be helpful in recalling these events, so it is only proper that the general tone of our yearbook should be in accordance with prevailing conditions and reflect them. With this in mind, we have selected a generally patriotic theme and, more specifically, a nautical one. The stirring silver battle-cruiser, standing out against the sea of blue on the cover, reminds at once of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Philippine waters. Following is the dedication to Admiral Stark of the United States Navy, who is now serving in London. Immediately after the Pearl Harbor incident and the active participation of our armed forces, there followed an increased activity on the home-front. This is shown next in our book by the pages devoted to the activities of our teachers in the registration, rationing, and spe- cial courses. The senior panel layout is suggestive of our beloved flag which, for so long, was kept flying gallantly above Bataan Peninsula and other places in the Philippines. In contrast to the troubled waters of the Pacific are the scenes in the field of the flag, taken at the Senior-Iunior outing of last Iune, up the peaceful Hudson River to West Point. The next section is called Off Duty for it is devoted to clubs and the diversions of the crew aboard the U. S. S. Coughlin. The navy theme is continued throughout by the write-ups in nautical style and by the captions also. At the conclusion of the Sports Sec- tion. the picture of Old Glory shows that the Breidlin ends, just as the war will end, with the Star Spangled Banner being raised on high. Coughlin, for whom the school was named. The gift will be cherished as a reminder of the man who so faithiully devoted his entire life to the advancement ot education. Mr. Cough- lin's abilities were recognized far beyond the boundaries of our community. and he was offered many opportunities in larger cities but chose to remain here until the end of his career. He was appointed Superintendent of City Schools in 1891, at which time the community was served by the old Wilkes- Barre High School now called the Union Street Building. It was during his administration that the present site was selected in 1909. Mr. Coughlin es- tablished a reputation as a brilliant educator. His association with the schools ended with his death in 1918, but his influence continued to be felt. In 1925 the Wilkes-Barre High School was re-dedicated and formally named the lames IVI. Coughlin High School in the memory of Mr. Coughlin. Thus it has remained as a tribute to the professional work of a man whose public life needs no other comment. It is with a deep feeling of personal pride that the school accepts this portrait made all the more intimate because it was painted by Mr. Cough- lin's daughter, Mildred, whose artistry has received world renown. W g , Z., , , Qui' Captain Speaks! Members of the Class of l942: When a young man enters the navy nowadays, he is seldom put aboard a ship immediately but is sent to a training center sometimes far from the sea. Among the many things that he is taught there apparently un- connected with actual naval service are body building exer- cises. Although one man may later serve as a carpenter on a battleship, another as an electrician on a submarine and a third as a gunner on a freighter, all receive the same important exer- cises. MR. J. H. SUPER Coughlin High School has followed somewhat the same lines in preparing you for the voyage of life. You have had some liberty in selecting subjects to fit your individual needs as you had planned your life, but you have been given certain essen- tials which every well-rounded man and woman must have. Your life will show how thoroughly you have made this a part of yourself. It will be most difficult if not impossible for you to be a trustworthy and reliable workman after commencement if you have not been one before. Your training represents a great investment made by your parents, your fellow citizens, and yourselves, and you have an obligation to show yourselves worthy of 'the care that has been given to your training by proving yourselves better than those who have not had such advantages. lf you do not attain the highest rank possible for your individual powers you are a failure and money has been wasted in your training. We expect you to keep growing and advancing as long as you live. Bon voyage through life, class of 1942. Though the pleasant mem'ries will all leave too, From our high school friends, we will soon be parted. Still here's one thing we say to you: Class of '42, now that We are leaving. And the time has corne to be on our way. There are many others to take our places, But here's one thing we Wish to say: CHORUS As years pass by, and we've drifted apart. We'll still remember your name. Often We'll dream and pretend that we are At Coughlin High once again. Again We'll see each face, That once we held so dear. For time can not erase The ties that hold us near. So: Although we part, still we can not forget: lVlem'ries of you will remain. -William Gudaitis, '42 Sgnlfblf V SUCCESS SENIOR TEA A SPORT DANCES WELL RECEIVED Socialltes unior Cfficers Stanley Bilski President Jeanne Rowlands Joseph Segar Secretary Mantle Orator u n1o r U s h e r s FFICIENCY cmd scholarship are two char- also possess qualities of leadership, personal- acteristics found in any member of the ity, and character. The club takes its name from the Greek letters, Alpha Rho Tau, which spell art. Besides doing the advance publicity for Coughlin's social events with colorful posters, the club was recently represented at the ex- hibition of oils and water colors at Bucknell University lunior College. The meetings, which are usually held in the Art Boom, usually include interesting talks by various members on different phases of art and their de- velopment. The members vary their activities by holding frequent meetings at which they draw, paint, or sketch. At Christmastime all made greeting cards. Seven decorated the Art Hoom for the Christmas party, given by Miss Evans. They painted Christmas scenes on the windows and black- boards and hung gaily-colored lights. A Keep 'Em Flying is the motto of these future air cadets, who are making government models. Sixty-six Beautiful Seascapes, landscapes, and practical poster designs arc cxccuted by our artists. Aviation Club LL you mates with modern ideas and an eye to the future step right this way. We'll take you along with us to a meeting of the Aviation Club. As we enter, we find one of their semi-monthly meetings taking place. We soon discover that the airplane model contest, which had become a regular institution to the club, has been laid aside this year in order that the boys might devote their full attention to the defense pro- gram in constructing just as many government models as possible. The Club stands strongly behind all other students making such models and is always ready to give practical aid to these amateur Wright brothers. The highlight of this season's meeting they'll tell us was the presence of Douglas I. Simons, an officer in the R. A. F., who spoke on his experiences in the present war. A girl from this organization always finds a bright spot in any illness she may have by the flowers or other suitable remembrance from the G. A. A. To be eligible for membership, a girl must have had active participation in bas- ketball, volleyball, table tennis, or any other girls' sport. Hats oft to this club and its adviser, Miss Daley. The club is not primarily a social organization but one which gives gener' ously of time, effort, and money to help those less fortunate. The group was formed four years ago as the Freshman Girl Reserves with Miss Rita Carlin as adviser. Because of the many students desiring membership, require- ments are necessarily strict in order to weed out the inactive. Although social Work takes considerable time, Girl Reserves still find op- portunity for mock trials, panel discussions, and dances for the Red Cross. A Sea of Trouble is brewing as Rifkin gives HJudge't Lawlor a hot-foot while prosecutor Boback looks on. Seventy-six F statistics can be depended upon, in a few few years most of the landlubbers will be bounding around on the waves or shoulder- ing muskets for Uncle Sam. Until they will be needed, the members of Hi-Y are occupying their time in becoming Air Raid Wardens, at- tending First Aid classes, cmd performing other patriotic non-combatant duties. Needless to say, the Hi-Y believes firmly in the old adage, All work and no play -as witnessed by their numerous Scavenger Hunts, and Sport Dances. Highlights of their year's social events were the projects planned with the Girl Reserves, which included the third annual Hi-Y-Girl Re- serve Dinner-Dance, the Mock Trial, and the panel discussions. The Hi-Y is definitely im' portant in Couqhlin's school life, for when boys get together, they either wreak havoc or do something constructive. The worthwhile is the l aim of Hi-Y. The monthly meetings are always of interest J .W 'YP im.. HE first and third Mondays of every month find vari- ous members of our ship's Geography Club hurrying to cabin 45 where our meetings are held. Perhaps, through the medium of movies, we take a trip across the United States or visit a village in South Africa. Sometimes we prefer just to sit and test our knowledge of geo- graphy by an informal quiz, conducted by our chief officer, Mr. Hensley. These programs whether formal or .informal never fail to be a source of en- joyment. Each spring our en- tire club forgets its cares and goes all out for a wonderful time. We hike through the sur- rounding countryside and, when we reach our destination, because of the carefully planned programs. These include talks, mo- tion pictures, and educational quizzes. BOARD the U. S. S. Coughlin, captained by Sidney V. Tomkiewicz, on the evening of Fri- day, March 20, was to be found a great deal of merriment, as officers, shipwreckers, hornpipers and the crew banded together to present the an- nual Coughlin minstrel show. Under the most cap- able direction of F. H. Super and P. B. Lewis, the boys presented two sides of life on the Coughlin : on board and on shore leave. HE power of music has been praised by many illustrious poets and musicians. The magic of music is quite evident. When our band strikes up, the whole crew sits on the edges of their seats. A football game, Varieties, or Minstrels, without a per- formance of our band, would be as empty as a Thanksgiving dinner with- out turkey. With the help of their ex- cellent conductor, Mr. P. B. Lewis, this musical organization produces many types of music, from a football fight song to a patriotic hymn. Each fall the spectators at the football games, await with eager anticipation the familiar ap- pearance of the band in their conserva- tive blue and red uniforms. Their forma- tions and marching on the field are of as fine a quality as their music. We, the crew of the U. S. S. Coughlin, salute the band! We're proud of you! PENING the current season on their own floor, the Coughlin five ran rampant over the Plymouth Indians by a 35 to 25 vic- tory score with forwards Elko and Williams playing a fine game. Coughlin then left home port and went down the valley for a stop at Nanticoke and a defeat although our set-shot artist, Bilski, was sinking baskets from all an- gles. A stop at Hanover brought a defeat de- spite the efforts of the giant center, Puckowitz. Back home again their challenge to the Meyers five proved a real thriller, but they lost even with floorman Mullins' snagging every ball. In- vasion by the Berwick five, as usual, gave more than enough thrills. The final whistle blew with the Berwick boys sinking the Red and Blue however. Elko set the pace. Then the boys went right out to give G. A. H. one of its hardest games although they lost even with the Whole team up on its toes. The Newport five came to stage a spectacular exhibition of fancy ball handling and tricky shots to win the game. And again Elko set the pace. A stop at the Kingston port gained a defeat notwith- standing Mullins' handling of the ball. With Plymouth anxious to revenge their earlier de- feat, they played a terrific game to Win al- though Becker gave his mightiest. The Nanti- coke five sailed up to Coughlin's port and handed the home team a loss regardless of the One Hundred Six Basket' splendid work of Bilski and Elko. Next with a stop at Meyers's port, Coughlin five lost in spite of the efforts of Williams. Hanover visited the local floor and a hard-fought game was wit- nessed With Hanover Winning heedless of Bil- ski's tries. With a hard clean game, G. A. B. finally nosed out the Coughlin boys despite the efforts of Williams and Puck. The Kingston foes came to Coughlin's floor and barely won with the Reserves playing most of the game. Elko starring. Both teams played well and both showed fine examples of sportsman- ship especially Coughlin when defeat came with the first game of the season. Exeter was next in line and fell beneath the power of Coughlin's nine and Bianchi's accomplished hurling, which he excellently portrayed by crediting himself with fifteen strikeouts. G. A. WE ROLL DEM BONES One Hundred Twelve HE goal of the ancient Spartans -a sound mind in a sound bodyfis likewise the aim of our physical education department. To attain these, students take part in such sports as volleyball, bas- ketball, table tennis and badminton, all of which require physical as well as mental agility. The high- lights of the program have been the various tournaments played. While the seniors were victorious in volleyball, they bowed to the juniors on the basketball court . . . The ever popular table-tennis tour- ney began with 79 teams partici- pating, the winners being Dolores Reilly for the girls and Ioseph Han- non for the boys. A new kind of reward is being given to the win- ner of the badminton tournament. It is a red, white, and blue pin, bearing the inscription, Scholastic Badminton Champion, from which hangs a gold shuttlecock. Physical education classes feature drills and marches in military nature. The girls themselves are the best proof that the department is living up to its aim. This group, organized by Miss Gerald- ine Daley two years ago, takes the place of girl cheerleaders and has the distinction of being the only corps of girls in the valley to take part in the sport activities at halves of football and basketball games. Each girl must have definite physical qualifications and also good posture. Their costumes set them off as one of the most outstanding groups ever trained here at Coughlin. They are all dressed uniformly in white skirt waists, white pleated skirts, red knee socks, saddle shoes, and last but not least, red and blue streamers, the school's colors, which hang from their white caps. These girls, together with their leader, Ann Hurley, have set an example which many other local high schools are planning to follow. One Hundred Fourteen The Majorettes ln ? -- fb .
