SUPER AT WORK Principafs Message OMMENCEMENT time is drawing near and again it is my duty to write a message of farewell to the graduating class. Farewells are usually sad things, but as a class is graduated from a school both faculty and pupils share a feeling of pride in past accomplishments, and the prospect of the promised adventures of the future for which their education and more mature years have fitted them takes away much of the sorrow of parting. , Your teachers have tried to give you many things that are very important for you personally and which will fit you for citizenship in this country. We have striven to give you every possible opportunity to lay firm, deep foundations on which to build the large and useful structures of your lives. We trust that you have leamed to value properly the American democ- racy in which we live, to appreciate the importance of religious tolerance and of the opportunities of character enrichment in a search for truth, goodness and beauty which it affords us, and to understand the sacredness of human personality which it exemplifies. With this thought in mind their enthusiasm was boundless, and soon every activity at Coughlin picked up as a result of such spirit. As the time for senior elections drew near an atmosphere of suspense seemed to spread through the halls as each person wondered if his or her favorite candidate would pool the necessary majority. Finally on Friday, March 8, this suspense ended, for three of Coughlin's best-known and best-liked students had been elected: Ioseph Jones, Ann Drugan, and Iohn Reiser. HROUGHOUT the United States there are many high schools which yearly receive a small percentage of their upperclassmen as members of the National Honor Society, an organization corresponding to the Phi Beta Kappa of colleges and universities, which aims particularly at the recognition of outstanding work in scholarship. Members are chosen by Mr. Super with the aid of the faculty and are judged not only upon scholastic standing but also upon character, leadership and service to the school. The lucky members are announced at the close of the fifth interval and are officially recognized on graduation night when their names are again read by Mr. Super. Certifi- cates are given to each member as Written proof of his accomplishment and all are able to purchase the keystone-shaped pin bearing the Words National Honor Society over a torch of knowledge. Anywhere in the United States, this pin is recognized and respected. Many Couqhlin organizations claim the people of this society as officers and many of its members star in the various dramatic productions of the school. Several are on the Board of Publications, both as Writers and ad gatherers While others more musically-inclined claim singing or playing as their chief interest. Every field of Coughlin's activities seems to meet when this group is gathered. What better inspiration could the younger students desire, than the example set by this year's Honor Society? These students attended their first cheer prac- tice and their first chapel exercises and beamed with excitement as they took part. They became members of different organizations and, in time, became leaders of these clubs. In their sophomore year, they saw the championship awards for foot- ball and track presented to the school, a memory which they can never forget. 'A A JU IOR CLASS . , 1 Y , 'rev ,,,, Y The Lower Classes OR the freshman, Coughlin High School is a new adventure, the beginning of a new life. The first few weeks are a time of mix-ups and settlements, of changes and more changes. Slowly a routine is established and a feeling of belonging is gradually secured. The freshman year is a basic year for most students and the habits fonned then generally pervade the minds of the scholars throughout the rest of their stay at Coughlin. The addition of one seventh and one eighth grade this year does not change the freshman attitude, but rather has a tendency to strengthen it. The sophomores, on the other hand, start their year with a feeling of renewing a familiar occupation. The standing which they enjoy seems much greater than that of the previous year: their responsibilities increase, and they acquire a greater sense of loyalty. This year usually begins a period of branching out into the activities of the school and of making more and more interesting social contacts. The sophomore is well-established with a year of high school behind him and more glorious years ahead. VERYONE has had, at some time in his life, an urge to travel, but few are fortu- nate enough to be able to indulge in this pleasurable pastime. The students of Coughlin High have, however, ample opportunity of learning customs and modes of living of the various peoples in other parts of the world through the medium of the Geography Club. This club, besides bringing the instructive and educational aspects of geography to the fore, also shows the interesting points of life in distant lands and in different parts of the United States in a vivid manner. This .is done by moving pic- tures, post-card tours, and best of all by lectures given by various members of the faculty who have obtained their information at first hand. This year talks were given by Mr. Zerbe, Miss Ritchie, Miss Gillespie, and William Gorski. One of the most in- teresting programs of the year was Guess Where Contest. A loud speaker was erected in the meeting room with the microphone in the Physics laboratory, where Wil- liam Gorski, acting as announcer, questioned twelve members of the club and later on an additional five. The questions were clues from which the contestant was to gather enough information to locate certain spots on the globe. The program was pronounced a great success by the critics: and there is reason to believe that they will also give favorable reports on this year's outing. It will be held, as usual, at Hendler's Quarry, and this year Mr. Hensley, indulging in his favorite hobby will take motion pictures of the interesting events of the day. These will be shone to the group before the close of school. Sixty-six UDGING from the increasing membership of the Science Club, there surely must be a strong drawing card among the many en- terprises of this group. Celebrating its sixteenth year of establishment, its original aims of encouraging sci- ence out of the classroom still furnish a beam to guide inquiring boys to possible solutions. Through motion pictures, lectures, and quizzes to- morroW's Edisons are able to broad- en their scope of scientific applica- tions and principles. Their semi- monthly meetings are generally adapted after programs which ap- pear in The Science Leaflet, a publication of the National Students Science Club to which this club belongs. The main purpose of found- ing any such organization necessi- tates first, the most active interest of a strong nucleus of boys, Willing to further easier methods of obtain- ing answers to the whys which con- front them: secondly, the effective continued interest of such a group. BOUT a month before the time for the Iournal, frequent appeals are made from the platform in Chapel, requesting that all Iournal notes be turned in. In order that these records of everyday occurences in classes and the activities of the clubs are in the best presentable arrangement, the Journal Reporters' Association, primarily de- vised to enable its members to gather col- lectively to confront a mutual problem, has been organized. At its meetings helpful sug- gestions and hints are made as well as possible lectures on some phase of journal- ism. The incentive of the reporters toward more complete information is its publication in the Iournal. The members of the Iournal Reporters' Association are therefore induced to do better composition work along such lines as neatness, sentence wording, and variety of thought. The success of the Asso- ciation lies in the fact that its members are elected by students who naturally choose their most capable representative. Sixty-n ine VERY morning in chapel, and every year at the Senior Play and at the Min- strels, the Varsity Orchestra provides musical entertainment and accompaniment. This select group of the finest instrumental talent in Coughlin plays a prominent and necessary part in high school life. Now in its twenty-eighth year of organization, the Vars- ity Orchestra has been the crack filler in Coughlin's log-cabin of entertainment ever since its beginning. Those producing the Opera, Varieties, and Amateur Show all ex- press their appreciation of lVlr. P. B. Lewis's orchestra, which he has been directing for the past seven years. The group includes both classical and swing numbers in its repertoire. The classical orchestra was or- ganized when lVlr. Davies was heading music in Coughlin, and incidentally, though Mr. Davies has graduated from active musi- cal service in school, he often returns to give advice. It has been only in the last two years, however, that a modern swing orches- tra was formed. This added feature of the main orchestra has exhibited its talents in both the Minstrels and in the Amateur Show and has found a place in the favor of the students. The rollcall of musicians in the orchestra is everchanging for each year, as the senior members graduate, new under- classmen have to be chosen. A try-out is held at the end of each school year, and those showing most ability and talent are selected to fill in the places left vacant by graduation. Thus the orchestra is kept well- balanced. Near the end of the school year, the annual banquet is held. The members and their boy or girl friends are the only ones entitled to attend this affair which is chaperoned by Mr. Lewis and another fac- ulty member and their wives. Following this. the orchestra winds up its full year by offer- ing its services in the Class Day and Commencement exercises. Francis Truscott. This group is placed second only to the Varsity Orchestra since it is composed of the less-experienced musicians of the upper three classes. Al- though it does not see much active public service, each member practices faithfully with the expectation that he will be called to fill the vacancies which may occur in the higher orchestra since the Reserve forms the chief source of material for the Varsity. The purpose of this organization is to bridge the gap that exists between the Freshman and Varsity orchestras. These versatile musicians are called upon once or twice each year to entertain the school with their delightful and varied programs. WATCH YOUR RHYTHM Seventy-one The Music Makers Cf The Freshman Assembly HE Freshman Orchestra, which is composed of boys and girls of the Freshman classes only, prepares those talented young musi- cians who have studied music in the elementary grades, to con- tinue their work in more advanced organizations. It also enables them to play in ensemble, to cultivate a deeper love and appreciation of the beautiful in music, and to become better acquainted with some of the Works of the masters. This club meets every Tuesday under the able leadership of Miss Nan Walker. One of the big events of this orchestra during the school term is its chapel program when the Varsity Orchestra takes the day off so that these versatile musicians can display their musical skill before the school. This program is usually featured by solos and by various string and brass duets, trios, et cetera. Last fall, Mr. Super inaugurated freshman chapel programs. which were held once every month, and selected the Freshman Orch- estra to furnish the music for these occasions, thus affording this little group added opportunity for pleasure and incentive for more intense and interesting Weekly rehearsals. EBI-IAPS the most colorful musical aggregation in Coughlin is the Band. After it has been speedily re-organized and Whipped into shape each fall, it presents a familiar sight in its red and blue uniforms to hundreds of spectators as it marches up and down the field sounding those old familiar tunes during the halves in football season regardless of weather conditions. This year the familiar Red and Blue marched in the Armistice Day Parade as representatives of Coughlinp and in the Varieties, they contributed concert numbers with some novelty acts as their share of the entertainment. When the Band was organized in 1915 by Mr. Gwilym Davies, it consisted of only fifteen players. Since then it has grown by leaps and bounds until now, under the supervision of Mr. P. B. Lewis, it boasts a membership of seventy- four players and enjoys an enviable reputation in Wyoming Valley. The full uniform consisting of Capes, caps, sweaters and trousers was acquired in l938. These youthful musicians meet every Friday to rehease, for behind all successful public appearances there must be hours of hard work and practice. HE Senior Select Chorus was established at Coughlin in 1935 with the purpose of developing part singing and arousing in its members the enjoyment of good music. Their outstand- ing performance this year, The Flower of Venezia, an operetta, Friday evening, February 9, was a tale of a beautiful but dis- obedient daughter and a poor but patrician father, a sea-faring hero and a band of peace-loving assassins. This group now makes numerous public appearances before charity and club organizations and has Won thereby high esteem. On Satur- day, April 13, they were invited to sing for the Kiwanis Club at the Hotel Ster- ling and that same evening they broad- cast over WBAX on the school program. A Cappella means the singing of selections without accompaniment, always a difficult procedure for a large group. Miss M. Arline Weiss directs the successful activities of this group. AY back in 1922 A. D., the Bank Cashiers' Association came into ex- istence at Coughlin. In that year, the Educational Thrift Service, through the Miners Bank, included Coughlin in its roster of schools Whose students bank money in school accounts. The Miners Bank considers it a civic duty to take charge of the school accounts, even though it does so at a yearly financial loss, because of the valuable lesson of thrift taught by systematic saving. The tact that the Cashiers' Association has been thriving for nineteen years proves that stu- dents are still saving money. This organiza- tion, sponsored by Miss Walsh, its adviser, is composed of two students from each class, elected to take charge of the banking. Coughlin's Hi-Y has been active for almost twenty years, and Hi-Y may well recall the accomplishments of these years With pride. The membership today totals ninety. With Mr. Ruddy, their faculty leader, the club has conducted several interesting programs at the regular Friday night meetings. Outstanding among the enter- tainers this year were Warden Healey, whose topic was Crime Does Not Pay, a subject which all present agreed was of vital importance to a growing boy, and Sergeant Connolly, a state trooper, who spoke on Safe Conduct On the High- Way, stressing the fact that courtesy and care of motorists could reduce the number of fatalities due to recklessness in driving. Reverend Mr. Tait of St. Stephen's parish, discussed Share Croppers of the South. The boys found themselves eagerly attentive to the problems of this oppressed class of persons and to Reverend Mr. Tait's presentation of their plight. Among the purely so- cial events of the calendar this year, Hi-Y lists a very successful Christmas Holi- day Dance, several joint meetings With the Girl Reserves and with the Inter-Club Council of Girl Reserves. The latter group joined with the council of Hi-Y in planning a snow frolic at the Y. M. C. A. camp last February. An outing at the Y. M. C. A. in the spring proved a fitting climax for the 1939-1940 year. Gracious In Manner-- UST sixteen years ago last September, a Girl Reserve Club made its initial bow before the senior girls of Coughlin. Since then, it has progressed by leaps and bounds, and its name is now synonymous with fun and friendli- ness. Along the line of fun, there have been two ten cent dances, a skating party, a Weiner roast, and a joint social meeting with the Hi-Y. As for friendliness- Well that is expected the whole year 'round. After. one of Peplin's bi-monthly meetings, Mr. Edgar Hill from Kingston, discussed beauty problems concerning nearly every girl. Don't think his hints didn't register either, for the next day several timidly blossomed out in the new hair styles which he had recommend- ed. At a later meeting four girls of different types were made up and their hair arranged by him. From these models each girl was able to get a general idea of what would look best on her. Last summer, three of Peplin's members at- tended the Girl Reserve summer conference at Lake Ariel, and when they re- turned, Were so full of ideas, that it was almost impossible to control them until the clubs started in October. Several also went to Allentown in February for mid-Winter conference, and returned with lots of new friends and lots of new ideas. Both the president and vice president of Inter-Club Council came from the ranks of Peplin, which also has three additional members who help to de- cide general policies for all. They Cut And Stitch EN years ago, an ambitious group of girls organized the still existent and Well- named Service Club. In the course of these years, Coughlin's organizations have come to recognize this club as one of the most progressive and essential in school life. The dramatic department looks to the Service Club for a Well-turned-out job of costume-making. Then on the nights of the performances in which these cos- tumes appear, the girls of the Service Club lend a hand again, this time assuming responsibility for the systematic care of the garments worn on the stage. The athletic department is grateful for the Willingness and reliability of these girls in rolling band- ages and ankle wraps for use in minor accidents in contests. A baby layette was recently finished and presented by the girls for use in the Homemaker classes in fu- ture years. The activities of the club include social features, however, as well as Ladies Aid. This year the members enjoyed moving pictures, a tea with the Home- makers' Club, and a Weiner roast with the G. A. A. The entire school should join in expressing its appreciation to the girls of the Service Club and to their adviser, Miss Gilchrist, for a commendable year of service. Eighty-four O develop initiative, poise, personality, and social grace is the aim of the Home- makers' Club, one of the newer organizations which has just completed its sec- ond year in the extra-curricular life of Coughlin. Further, it seeks to acquaint all girls with the value of the so-called homemaking courses, and by arranging a series of highly diversified programs to be given at each of the meetings, the club has tried to fulfill its aims and ideals. A brief resume of the year's activities will serve to dem- onstrate the success of these endeavors. In December, this group prepared Christmas cookies for the aged men residing at the Sutton home. A delightful afternoon tea was held in February, at which Miss Toohey and Miss Gilchrist poured. At another of their meetings Mr. Disque of the Percy A. Brown Company, this city, addressed the club. His subject was The Qualities of a Good Salesgirl. Several moving pictures on topics relating to home management were shown and a Weiner roast held jointly with the Service Club brought the year to a close. Realizing early the opportunities the field of aeronautics offered to young men, Mr. Henry Booth, founded the Aviation Club nine years ago, This group is engaged in promoting interest in aviation and in acquainting its members with some of the elementary principles of this highly-important subject. Eighty-six I OWLINGI This sport which is enjoyed by millions of men cmd women throughout the country proved a natural when in- troduced to Coughlin three years ago. The effort to inaugurate this popular activity was prompted by a desire to promote an interest in group bowling and to provide relaxation for boys not actively engaged in other sports dur- ing the long winter months. Yes, a consequence of much different nature results, for, after typing forty or more Words per minute, with five or less errors, in the Thursday fifteen-minute tests, the typing student is awarded cr certifi- cate and is then qualified for membership in the Typing Club. This, the only club of the Commercial Department of the school, was organized by Miss Durkin just one year ago, and it has proved to be a great success. Early every Sunday morning. forty or fifty of them go galloping through the country. Since the club is so large, they also ride on Tuesday and Wednes- day afternoons. In order to be enrolled in this club, the candidate does not have to be an expert rider, as one of the main objectives of this organization is to teach Ninety HI YO, SILVER, AWAY the inexperienced rider the skill of a good horseman. The club was organized by Mr. Casey two years ago and has attained an important position among the school clubs. Through its establishment great enjoyment has been brought to many lovers of outdoor life, as well as valuable knowledge of the art of riding. Ninety-two They Paint and Design 'R I-IE Girls' Art Club meets every Wednesday at noon in the art room under the direction of Miss Florence Evans. The girls gather to further their knowledge of art, to give more time to it, and to arouse more interest in the craft. There are no longer any eliminating requirements. Girls who are not in a regular art class are also admitted to the club. Up until this year the name of this club Was the Thursday Art Club, but due to uncontrollable circumstances, it was forced to meet every Wed- nesday and the name was changed to that of the Wednesday Art Club. The date of the establishment of this club is unknown, but its accomplishments are not. Members engage in quick quizzes, discussions, and the making of notebooks on their favorite subject. During this year they were also busy in making dolls for the Red Cross. Any girl who is interested in improving her Work or in learning should become a member of this club, Which Was founded With the idea of giving a broader knowledge in the field of art. Rarely has one gone through the halls and not seen some evidences of this club's Work. At each of their meetings they have one of their own members speak on his type of art. The purpose of this club is to give advanced knowledge of art to its members and to advertise all school activities at Coughlin. ANY think Biology is too dry, but the members of the Biology Club don't. The purpose of this club is to carry on Where their class Work leaves off and help to make this study more interesting to them. While in class, they study microscopic structures and seed germination: at the meetings they manipulate micro- scopes, make simple slides, and germinate, grow and transplant different plants Which they are allowed to take home. They also have moving pictures about birds, flow- ers and forests. Some of the more oratorically-inclined give talks. To make all this more enjoyable, Mr. Shaffer has made use of the school's amplifying system by using it to conduct some of their meetings as quiz contests. Members each year plant tulips in front of the building and, at Christmas time, give the halls and auditorium a very cheery aspect by their decorations. Despite one of the toughest sched- ules any school was ever required to play, the Red and Blue copped the decision in eight of its ten tilts and had the old injury jinx not caught up with them, they'd prob- ably have put their slate away still un- marked. But the teams need no alibis. The tractor like charge of its line and the blitzkrieg attack of its backtield made Coughlin the outstanding eleven of the Valley. Volleyball and basketball have always been the most popular sports with the girls. This is very evident in the fact that each year more and more turn out for prac- tice.
