FGREWORD NCE upon a time-which is how every real tale of Mother Goose should start-a large number of boys and girls discovered a new world. It really was not as spectacular as it sounds: they merely outgrew childhood and entered Cough- lin. The school was not unlike the old lady in the shoe when it gathered them in, for it already had many, many children. At first, they were bewildered and strangely awed by the crowds: but these feel- ings soon left them, and they began to feel at home. Passing days became years, and the years wit- nessed changes: the girls contrived fancy coiffures to take the place of pigtails: gradually, the male element bequeathed their knickers to younger brothers and appeared in long trousers. It was wonderful to be grown up! Life in the shoe was very full and exciting. There were classes, club meetings, parties, enter- tainments and countless other activities to occupy the happy days which fled by. The boys and girls were now quite matured- people called them Seniors in a reverent tone of voice-but in many of their activities, though prob- ably unnoticed, there existed some little phase reminiscent of childhood and nursery rhymes. There were some ten o'clock scholars who arrived late for classes: a few gullible ones joined the Boots and Saddle Club to ride a cock horsey: and as they twirled at school dances, the orchestra may have played A-Tisket-A-Tasket or some other swing classic taken from the pages of Mother Goose Rhymes. Four years have slipped away since these boys and girls first came to the shoe named Coughlin. Now they tumble out-and their high school adven- ture must become a composite group of happy memories to be treasured forever in the land of day- dreams. They take with them their Breidlins which, it is hoped, will preserve some of those memories in a tangible form. Because they have, unwittingly, been close to Mother Goose during their high school careers, the rhymes of that lovable lady have become the theme of their memory book. ..N Five
