IDA ELLIS MRS. IDA ELLIS The citation, this year, is being issued to one of our long-time community educators and leaders, who has devoted many years to public service and is still, today, devoting her time and services for the benefit of the public and community. TO WIT: MRS. IDA ELLIS graduated from the Iowa Nor- mal School. She taught 24 years in the Oak Knoll School fnow Cottonwood Union School Dis- trictj and in the Barry School, as it was called, but its legal name was Cottonwood Elementary- Tehama County, Know the Evergreen Union School Districtl. She came to Cottonwood in 1912 and began teach- ing in the Oak Knoll School, which is the Grange Hall building today. Mrs. Ellis taught grades 1, 2 and 3 and had fifty students in the three grade levels. Then, she taught the 7 and 8 grades in the same school for three years. During World War I, Mrs. Ellis taught in Brent- wood, Contra Costa County, while her husband served in the Armed Forces in World War I. She and her husband moved back to Cottonwood in 1919. Teachers were very scarce during this period. While working in the Butter De- partment in their Cottonwood Creamery, Mrs. Ellis was contacted to do some substitute work in the Barry School, legal name at that particu- lar time, Cottonwood Elementary-Tehama County, now the Evergreen School. As some substitute positions turn out to be long-termed, this particular position turned into being a very long-term substitute, because Mrs. Ellis taught 18 years in this position. Some of her former students while teaching at the Oak Knoll School were: Bernice Rose, Earl Shammy Stewart, Lucy Jones, Fred Staser, James Buz Morgan, John Erickson, Nadean Phibbs, Fredia Hamilton, Mary Coker, George Baker, Alfred Seale and Robert Kloose. Even after Mrs. Ellis retired from the teaching field, she tutored many students individually in the Cottonwood area. She has always been very interested in the progress and welfare of stu- dents. She is truly a dedicated person. In 1960 Mrs. Ellis was appointed to serve on the Cottonwood District Cemetery Board. Members today are: Mrs. Rosemary McCabe, Mr. Vern Williams and Mrs. Ida Ellis. Since this board has taken over, we are sure you have noticed many improvements. This cemetery was formed in 1873. During its early formation, many records were not very adequate and most were destroyed by fire. Since Mrs. Ellis was on the board, she has spent many hours of work doing research. Today, maybe with the ex- ception of one, all graves are identified and com plete duplicate records are kept. The Cotton- wood Cemetery was formed as the Cottonwood District Cemetery in 1943. The first board mem bers were: John Krumwide, Rose Dubecker and W. E. Morgan. Mrs. Ellis knows her local history and always enjoys sharing her knowledge about historical sites and facts. She is interested in education and is a strong supporter for Cottonwood to have its own high school. This feeling is very strong among the community leaders and it is hoped the day is not too far in the future when Cottonwood may have its own high school so our students can remain in our community, instead of being hauled to Anderson w h e r e t h e y lose their identity. In view of the above services rendered to the public and community, the Faculty and Student Body of the West Cottonwood Junior High De- partment award and dedicate the 19th edition of the Chief to Mrs. Ida Ellis, a true com- munity leader and educator. Washington, D.C. 20203 ,. s , L. , 5 . rw, .M AQ 2 THE PRESIDENT'S PHYSICAL FITNESS AWARD PROGRAM Established by President Johnson, the Presidential Physical Fitness Award Program honors students who demonstrate exceptional physical achievement. It is designed: C13 to motivate boys and girls to develop and maintain a high level of physical fitnessg C25 to encourage good testing programs in the schoolsg Q0 to stimulate improvement of health and physical education programsg and C43 to provide additional information on the physical condition of America's youth. The President's conviction of the importance of physical fitness stems from his own experience as a school principal more than 30 years ago. His first paycheck was used to buy a volleyball and net for the playground use of his pupils. The Award program was conceived by the President's Council on Physical Fitness, and program details were developed jointly by the Council and the American Association for Health, Physical and Recreation. The Program is administered by these two organizationsfl The importance of fitness of the individual in relation to mental productivity was not first conceived by the President of the United States. But it is the first time any President has seen fit to personally honor those students who have worked hard to develop themselves to be physically and mentally alert. The Cottonwood Schools have operated under a similar testing program years before the Award Program was initiated. We have found our Physical Education? rogram to be a fertile field in which to develop attitudes and self-discipline as well as fitness of the body. We heartily endorse the cooperation and concern of our President with the Physical Fitness Program ofthe Cottonwood Schools. 4Bulleting President's Council on Physical Fitness and the American Association for Health'Physical Education and Re- creation. ik f -:gp Wfffllllfllali -R S gfgiy r 143 1214 fRight Picturey Steve McCar1ey scores another point for the Chiefs. fRight Picturey , Scott Westphal scores with a lay-up shot. fTop Pictureb V Merle Hunter showing follow-through on a one-handed shot. . , W V, , ., .. .,.., ., -1' ' P ,- slffxf--1 f - V 2 - Q 1 , H Q, V.,,,i,..,,t,,,,w.f.i W...-..W....,....y-.mg ,i.,.,.,WM...!.,.,,w.v . -M QM Y,,,,,,.,,,,,.:..,,. , ,. ,.,,. ,, ...e..vmus,-491. 6 ,, J iw? , Anyfa' 'Tv azsif 7.5 V55 gg K.
