Sendai: 01644 I9 , 1945 The red and white of Main Hall has an expectant air about it. The tangled mass of green ivy that invaded its every nook and cranny nods in the brisk March breeze. The beautiful old building is even more beautiful in contrast to the many modern structures on adjacent blocks. One of these, the large, imposing looking building across from P. If O.. is the classroom and administration building. There is another dorm to the north of the administration building which houses 250 girls. Behind P. E, O.. built on what was formerly the athletic field, is ,i small chapel-its Gothic architecture is the delight of every Cottey girl. Behind the chapel is faculty row. a court ot small white cottages, The new athletic tield is on the block where the first Cottey Inn had been many years betore. At the far end of the field. there is a small field house and then a not-quite-so-small stable. hous- ing a mount for every girl. Moonlight trail rides have become the favorite pastime of the Cottey students of llltii That first Cottey Inn has been replaced by another on the corner where there formerly was a small grocery store But the student Union Building is the pride and joy of the campus? The bowling alleys. game rooms. libraries. cafeterias. parlors. dance floors and lounges are entirely at the students' disposal. But to get back to Main Hall, XVhy is it wearing its know-all air? XVhy does it seem to smile. as if expecting some new jewel in its old crown of memories? Perhaps the crowded auditorium filled with older women. the bewildered look on the faces of juniors. the excited chatter of seniors talking to some girl who look as if she might have been a Cotteyite way back when, may explain it. Uh huh! You've guessed itl It's Foundet's Day. Xlost of the Class of '-45 are among the hodgepodge of faces. The honking of horns and the shifting of gears announce that still more of them are arriving. Some of them are even returning by helicopter. They land quite nonchalantly on the athletic field and smile understandingly at the harrassed juniors meekly directing trathc. l.et's follow this tall, raven-haired, sophisticated women as she walks over to the Student Union Building. I-Ier long. loose strides take her to the lounge designated as the meeting place and general headquarters for the alums of '45, Her hand hesitates tor the slightest moment as she reaches towards the door that will unveil old memories and acquaintances, Then she looks up eagerly. smiles. opens the door and enters the room. The sonata of high pitched voices suddenly stops in the middle of the allegro movement. Isn't that? I'm sure it isf It must be--it is' I.ouf Lott Jamesf XVell. all of you that have lived through a Foun- ders Day know what that means. -Rather than make rhyme or reason from the babble which follows let's wait until it quiets down. This conversation should prove interesting. Lou is seated on a lounge, her long legs crossed, hands folded. lshe has given tip the nasty habitl. deep in conversation with a slim school-teachcrish looking XVOITIJH. Reeves.i' starts Lou Ellen. Not Reeves. interrupts the light-haired woman. Chadwick. Yes. it's Mrs. Dean Chadwick now. Not Dean. Rosemary .... Oh. this is too much! I thought you were teaching at Northwestern. I am .... Of course. I missed a few years while th: children were young, but now that they're in school I've begun to teach again, 'Northwestern just gets in yotir blood' I saw in the Bulletin alumni news that you were living in New York this winter. 'XVell. I suppose you would call it living there. XVe call it our home address anyway. But John is gone much of the time. and my work keeps me so busy that we hardly see the penthouse, VW manage to take time to leave the hum-drum of the citv for a few months' travel each year. We're especially fond of the South Seas ..., although the Mediterranean is fascinating. Life isn't too boring, I guess. Have you heard who is to be here today' I know that Toni can't make it. Shes in the middle of her 365th week as star of Reading Vogue. her latest thing on Broadway. Confidentially. the great Neutonis plans to settle down with her fourth husband after this play. Says she intends to give up the stage permanently. Rosemary chtickled at this. and said, I really doubt if she'll give it up. don't you? Have you heard that Vis is managing the Duck pond at the 1065 St. Louis Exposition? As a decoy she uses a faded blueajean jacket . . . it's out in the show case in Main Hall now .... the big attraction in the Founders Day display of 'lirsts' at Cottev, Through the years, Vis has developed a more sympathetic understanding and tender treatment of young ducklings. Now and then, you even see Caretaker Jennie Claire take the wee weh foot in her motherly hand to determine any pttlse abnormality, She attributes her success to her rigid nurses' training. Speaking of Vis reminds me of Mini Do you know '.... 'H Yes, interrupts I.ott quickly, 'Ive heard the 'golden-voiced wren' on her 'Swoon-Soon-Moon' program. It must have been that lrium smile that landed the job for her. Not only does her telephone ring twice every night. bttt by accentuating the positive she successfully succeeded Tawrence I.ibbet on the Pit l.arade sponsored by Punks Irlybrtcl Ci Thats real Iowa corn' Speaking of Iowa and corn. what do you hear from Doherty? Reeves. Mrs. Chadwick tsorry. Roscmaryl settles back in the cushions of her chair and begins. Doherty and Bob tinally managed to get married. But all they went through' Shes still waiting for him to pass his very last test to enable him to get out of the Navy, In the meantime she's whipping the six little Hatchs into nrst class condition as a last-moving. fastathinking basketball team. In fact, they've got a fighting chance to cop the Iowa state finals Speaking of tinals , Have you seen Crothers on campus I managed to see her long enough to gather that she's still teaching athletics at Cottev. At present shes in the process ot grading her waitresses on their tap routines Singing waiters have become a part of Cottey-thanks to Mary. That crszy California suite' Doug really knew her stuff tho'. when getting her degree from Cottev. That duo-commercial and home ec course really came through. 'Hubby. eight little ones and Uncle Peter doing hnef she wrote in her last letter,
