lleclic ation Costa MeSa'S answer to John WHYDS You say there-'s a sailboat on the football field? Because he is a cheerful person and enjoys working with young people, one of the most popular figures around our campus is Coach Don Burns. His ever present smile and sincere interest are just two of the reasons why comments such as He's a terrific guy and Coach is just great are heard so often. Donald Edward Burns was born in Santa Ana in August of 1926. He graduated from San Diego High and then served two years in the Air Force. Returning to school after his military service he attended Santa Ana junior College and the University of California. After receiving his B. S. , he started teaching in the Los Angeles School District in 1951 and taught there for three years before moving to Harbor High. When Costa Mesa opened he transferred here as a member of the teaching and coaching staff. Mr. Burns now attends Chapman College and is working on his Master's degree. During Easter and summer vacations Coach Burns can be found most often at the beach where he has worked as a lifeguard for fifteen years. He also finds time in between coaching after school sports and going to school, to participate in his favorite hobbies, surfing and sailing. Along with being an excellent teacher and coach, one of Coach Burns' most notable qualities is his genuine concern for youth. He enjoys working with teenagers and has devoted much of his time to the young people of this area and because of this he is respected and admired by all who know him. We, the Roundup Staff of 1965, would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Burns for his many contributions to the community, the school and its students, by respect- fully dedicating to him, the 1965 Roundup. j 5
