DON BURNS 1516? 50 xi X5 Q f F X lleclic ation Costa MeSa'S answer to John WHYDS You say there-'s a sailboat on the football field? Because he is a cheerful person and enjoys working with young people, one of the most popular figures around our campus is Coach Don Burns. His ever present smile and sincere interest are just two of the reasons why comments such as He's a terrific guy and Coach is just great are heard so often. Donald Edward Burns was born in Santa Ana in August of 1926. He graduated from San Diego High and then served two years in the Air Force. Returning to school after his military service he attended Santa Ana junior College and the University of California. After receiving his B. S. , he started teaching in the Los Angeles School District in 1951 and taught there for three years before moving to Harbor High. When Costa Mesa opened he transferred here as a member of the teaching and coaching staff. Mr. Burns now attends Chapman College and is working on his Master's degree. During Easter and summer vacations Coach Burns can be found most often at the beach where he has worked as a lifeguard for fifteen years. He also finds time in between coaching after school sports and going to school, to participate in his favorite hobbies, surfing and sailing. Along with being an excellent teacher and coach, one of Coach Burns' most notable qualities is his genuine concern for youth. He enjoys working with teenagers and has devoted much of his time to the young people of this area and because of this he is respected and admired by all who know him. We, the Roundup Staff of 1965, would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Burns for his many contributions to the community, the school and its students, by respect- fully dedicating to him, the 1965 Roundup. j 5 I ' kj . af'!ijfff'MJ 'V KKK Q Aw QM XM' My Vw ,ffl 7 ' ff Qbjfx ! ,1lJ,P 0, Q ,J X, ,y M Ny J Y ff +7 if X ffr lf!! jf! Our extra-cu rric- ular program has been expanded and the curriculum more interesting. Our student Council and Congress have initiated new programs which have been met with en- thusiasm bythe Student Body. In the future, new obstacles will present new challenges, but without question C.M.H.S. will use the challenge and continue as one of the top schools in Southern California. Q-fix, za serif! PRIN CIPA L As our school has matured, changes have come. We have undertaken changes in class organization such as team teaching and data processing, student government and student activities. These developing ideas have in- creased the responsibility and participation of the entire student body. We have also undertaken an evaluation of our entire pro- gram which will provide the insight to con- tinue growing. Change, growth, maturity, we have all contributed and benefited. KW BOT S VICE PRINCIPAL The paramount objective that has dominated my planning for this school year has been the development of student leadership at all levels. Emphasis has been put on building the school to new heights through stressing a greater sense of student responsibility in the solution of campus problems. f- GIRLS VICE PRINCIPAL Accomplishments at Costa Mesa High School have been many over the past few years. Team Teaching, Data Processing, and The Work Experience program have been newly introduced while recognition has been given to many students for their outstanding work in science, math, and agriculture. These accomplish- ments and many more have con- tributed to make Costa Mesa High the outstanding school that it is today. Q l DISTRICT ADMINISTRA TION MAX RUSSELL DR. Presi- dent, Ted Bandaruk, was known to the students of Mesa High for his friendliness and schoolspirit As Student Body President he had many duties. Each morning he lead the entire school in the flag salute and many times gave the first period announcements. His mos t important job was being head of Student Council, which controls nearly all student acti- vities and works with the admin- istration. During the past four years, Ted participated in many eXtra-cur- ricular activities. In his Fresh- man year, Ted went out for jun- ior Varsity baseball, but as Ted put it, I was number nineteen and there were only eighteen uni- forms. As a sophomore he played Bee football and was on thejunior Varsity wrestling team . A s junio r Class President of 1963-1964 he initiated many new ideas. Under his direction the junior Class of that year organ- ized and held the first Marty's Corral and the first Powder Puff football game. Also during his junior year Ted played Bee football. In his Senior year he played o n the defensive black team of the Varsity football squad . Following graduation, Ted plans to attend California Western University at La Jolla. After two years at Cal Western he plans to transfer to either a Dental or Veterinary School. TED BANDARUK CABINET The A.S.B. Cabinet was not a part of student government in itself but its members held various positions within the struc- ture of our student government. They were elected along with the A.S.B. President in the spring elections. The Vice- President presided over the Student Council in the absence of the President and was the President of Student Congress. The Secretary took minutes at Council meetings and conducted all correspondence. The Treasurer kept all records of finan- cial matters. The Student Court judge presided over the Student Court and was in charge of Student Control. The California Association of Student Councils Representative fC.A.S.C .1 attended meetings with all high school councils of Orange COUHW and was a member of the Student Council. The Cabinet members were a vital part of our Student Government. VICE PRESIDENT King Fitch TREASURER c.A.s.c. Read When the 1964-65 Student Council first met, it Was in a unique position because not one of its members had previously served on the Mesa High Student Council. Its main traditional purposes are to manage the ASB budget and to foster and support extra -curricular activities. Two big pro- jects of this years' council were the creation of the Inter-Club Council and Student Code of Con- duct. Mesa's Student Council and Student Congress Worked in conjunction on the formation of the Student Code of Conduct. In addition, the council established traditions concerning Homecoming Activities by adding to the number of princesses and devising a new method for their selection. It also changed the charity collection from Total-All-Giving to the United Fund and donated S500 this year. One more complex undertaking by council members Was volunteering to plan and organize a dance called the Battle-of-the-Bands -Play-a-Thon for the three high schools in this area. All proceeds Went to the March of Dimes. It was evident that this year's Student Council was not handicapped by its initial inexperience, as it proved to be extremelyactive, creative, and completed its term with a long list of accomplishments. Student Congress Was composed of members elected by each English and Senior Social Studies class. Their purpose was to give the Student Body an avenue of communication with Student Gov- ernment. This year they Worked on the Student Code of Conduct, revised student elections and Worked on the possibility of a student store. STUDENT CONGRESS -1--: .l m fi 7 i 7' ' QQ K ani ROW 1: K. The purpose of Student Activities is to help set up new traditions and activities. The members are students interested in the improvement of our school and the development of pride and spirit. Their first project was the Homecoming Charity Dance and they planned Big Switch Day and a dance in the spring. The purpose of Noon Activities was to plan lunch-time activities which would appeal, and involve a large part of the student body. Some of this year's projects were: A co-ed tricycle race, a pie- eating contest, a hootenanny, Wrapping people as Christmas presents contest, a fencing exhibi- tion and many others . Their main job was to enforce the Student Code of Conduct, a set of ethical standards which all students are expected to observe in order to improve the school. The Student Court judge, Tom Read, was elected by the Student Body in the Spring. His job was to preside over the court While listening to cases. The members were selected on the basis of their grades and school participation. The court listened to cases and decided punishment in an effort to put some of the responsibility for discipline in the hands of the students . STUDENT LL,V Flying across the great Pacific fby jetl from Nagoya, japan on July 30, 1964 came Mesa3s foreign exchange student - Reiko Takahashi. Her new American family was the Brysons. Peggy, a junior at Mesa, was for- tunate in having Reiko as her sister while she was in America. Unlike Mesa, japan has no AFS committee in the schools, so Reiko, along with the 120 other japanese who were finally accepted, had to go through her city gov- ernment and take three different tests which enabled her to qualify. One of her obligations as an exchange student was to give many talks on japan and her ideas of America. Many trips, however, went with her responsibilities. She traveled to Sacramento with the YWCA, and also visited San Francisco, Palm Springs, and Disneyland. just before she leaves for japan, a three weekbus trip has been planned for her and the other exchange students to Washington and New York. The academic life in japan as compared to the United States, says Reiko, is em- phasized more than their social life. She took twelve subjects at her other school. Some of the subjects she had which were not offered at Mesa are Chinese classics and philosophy. japan's music program was not quite as extensive as ours either After returning to japan she will have to finish her Senior year, as this year does not count for her. She later plans to work with the YWCA and the AFS. Reiko expressed the desire to return to the U.S. but due to rules that the AFS has set up she will not be able to for at least two years. 73 JUNIQR Mr, P. Myers l Mr. I. Grothus PRESIDENT John Hutcherson The main responsibility of thejunior Classwas to raisemoney for the Prom. The traditional money raising projects sponsored by the juniors are Marty's Corral and the Powder Puff Football Game This year bothwere a great success . The fun lasted all day, starting in the morning with the Pow- der Puff Game, followed byMarty's Corral and then the Hootenanny and dance that evening. Later on in the year the juniors held a car Wash, February 27, and a dance in March. The theme of the dance was hillbilly and everyone dressed to play the part. The result of all this hard Work was the Prom, held on May 22, at the Lafayette Hotel in LongBeach. Music was provided by the George Liberache Orchestra. Everyone had awonderful time and the year ended as a success for the juniors . Do you think the Rams will sign us up? E ttl, Q, Smoke gets in your eyes. Irwin PRESIDENT Dan Hoey After the Freshmen managed to find their classes at the beginning of the year, they quickly be- came organized. They made a lot of money by rentingslaves at Marty's Corral. The slaves were all volunteers and the Freshmen showed quite a lot of spirit by getting out and Working for this project. By the end of the first semester, they were making more money than any previous Fresh- man class had made. They held a dance after the Mesa vs. Harbor basketballgame, February 26. The band was composed of Freshmen and the dance was a big success. Even their parents showed enthusiasm when the Freshmen tied with the juniors in the P. T. A. membership drive. ln spite of the difficulties of this being their first year at this school, the Freshmen have had an exciting year to remember. ISn't there an easier way to eat this? The boys had to letter in asport, accept the Letterman's Constitution, and pass the initiation to belong to the club. For initiation, which lasteda Week, the boys had to be slaves for a member. Many of the tasks the slaves had to do were em- barrassing but, all in all, they had fun This year the club had a dance with the Girl's Athletic A s s oc ia tion. They also had an Invitational Diving Meet at our school. Schools from all over came to compete. At the end of the season they had a Sport's Avvard's Night. You've had it buddy! 135 Oh yeah! They practiced from sixth period to dark every day at the Mesa Verde Country Club Where they also held their home matches. iv' Q BASEBALL Q 160 VA RSITT COACH PA RS ONS The 1965 Mustang Varsity came into the season with a good team but with little experience. They had at this time beaten Huntington and Bolsa Grande. The team had a few returners. Mike White, last year's leading hitter, looks destined for all league honors by his per- formance thus far. john Clay and Mike Madrid were two starting pitchers returning from last year. The outfield is dotted with returners such as Dennis Leyerly, Rick Oliver, and Randy Wilson. This team should go far this year with the talent it has shown.
