Yv-.J .-- -....w-..,..P.,-..1...-.- ,--1.-.f--7--,WJ if -A .-.- -V U 1-,, ,, ASKETB LL OF 1939-1940 The 1939-40 basketball season has been one of the most outstanding in the history of Coshocton High School Shaking off an early season slump the Red Clads began staging last minute rallies to pull vlctory after victory out of the fire They climbed to a first place tie with Marietta A last league en counter with that team shattered the Red and Blacks hopes for a conference championship Basketball titles in the conference have been ex ceedmgly difficult for the Redskms to capture al though they have gained a lion s share in football Joining the Cential Ohio Conference in the early 20 s Coshocton waited nearly twelve years to take over the baskelball throne They won theu first hardwood title in 1935 going on to the finals in the state tournament They won the league t tle again in 1936 On December 12 in their opening game the Red skins went down to defeat to a Bridgeport quintet Although the Braves showed promlse the Brldge port team was too speedy and the game ended with Coshocton on the short end of a 39 29 score In then second non league encounter on Decem ber 15 the Coshocton Redskins defeated Uhnchs ville 31 28 On December 20 the Braves met the Xenia team After trailing all through the first half the Skins came back and won by a score of 40 29 On December 27 the Red and Black went down to their second defeat Martins Ferry 24 28 In their Central Oh1O League opener against Lan caster s Golden Tornadoes the Redskms came through to win by a narrow margin of 30 29 On January 9 the Redskins journeyed to Zanes ville where they went down to defeat by a score of 34 32 Although the Red and Black outscored the Blue Devlls in action they were unable to sink more foul shots On January 12 the Coshocton passers rushing madly from behind and making two baskets ln the last forty two seconds of play whisked through with a 43 41 vlctory over the Newark Wildcats Again on January 19 the Redskins raced from behind and nosed out the Cambridge Browmes 24 On January 26 the Redskms met the Marietta Tigers Again a rally in the last seconds produced a win for the Braves With only a minute and fif teen seconds remaining, Coshocton was holding l62l precariously to a 31-29 lead.
