Rin-n-ng! There goes the bell, officially be- ginning school for the term of 1955-19.56. 11 mm! Let’s have a look. Yes, this school at Plain- field looks just as any other high school would look. Take the freshman class for instance. Thirty-four students eager and looking forward to their very first day of high school. This is what they have been waiting for for a long time. But this class is no ordinary class, it has something special as you will see. This class has not thirty-four students, but thirty-four individuals, each possessing a certain quality of his own, and all striving to be members of the senior class of 1959. Next comes their sophomore year. They ordered their class rings that fall and received those precious items of jewelry in the spring. That year was soon gone and now here they are as juniors. My how they worked. They won the maga- zine sales contest held between the juniors and sen- iors. Next they conducted a not-so-successful scrap drive. They decorated the gym beautifully anti even entertained Santa Claus for their Christmas square dance. “Desperate Ambrose” was staged in April and was a grand success. In May they honored the seniors with an all-night, prom with “Magic Moments” as the theme. And thus ended their junior year. This year 26 of those individuals have acquired the proud title of “seniors.” The food stand at the county fair was an important project this year. This required a lot of work but proved to be a lot of fun, too. The stage production this year was titled “It’s Great to be Crazy.” This was also successful. They sponsored several square dances during the year and were in charge of the concessions at the basketball games. The scholarship team that went to Denison each year always included several members of the class. They are also proud of the boys who represented them on the basketball and baseball teams and the girls who were on the cheerleading squad. Several presidents of the various clubs are members of the class. Also the co-editor of the school paper “The Inkspot” and the co-captains of the basket- ball team are seniors. They enjoyed the results of all their hard work in a trip to New York City and Washington D.C. Now they were very busy making graduation plans. “Forward ever. Backward never” was chosen for their motto. Scarlet and grey arc their class colors with the red rose as their class flower. Listen! You can hear the faint strain of Pomp and Circumstance the processional. They have their diplomas now and their high school days are over. “Surprised? No, I’m not surprised, I knew they could do it all the time.” 16 Faculty ROBERTA ASHCRAFT—Denison University. A.B. Majors: Latin. English, French, Biology. UNION SCHOOL The Senior Class of Union Local School feel they have accomplished much in their grade and high school days through hard work and co-operation. In our Freshman Year of School, we had forty-five students in our class. Now we have thirty-six, twenty-one of which have attended Union for twelve years, eleven who have attended through high school and four who have entered after the ninth grade. In order to raise money for funds and the Senior Class Trip, the class made and sold Christmas cen- terpieces, sold novelties, Christmas cards, maga- zines, supplies, candy and Stanley products, and have sponsored skating parties, dances and socials. We are proud of the boys in our class who have played on the baseball and basketball teams. Seven of the Senior boys were on the basketball team, five were on the baseball team and four of the Senior girls were the varsity cheerleaders. During the Junior Year we presented “Hillbilly WeddinY a comedy which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The class also gave a Junior-Senior Prom with the theme “South Seas” in honor of the Senior Class of 1958. Our class colors are black and white. The flower is the red rose. “Nothing Is Gained Without Work” was chosen as the Senior Class Motto. Our class looks back with many memories of good times; never forgetting our years together. But also we look forward to the trip to Washington and New York City, and further beyond toward rich and full lives. Executive Head WAYNE T. MATTHEWS—Executive Head. As I look around the table I see friends I haven’t seen for many years. First, there is Ixirry Fleming, who was always the quiet one in the class. He has just returned from covering a big news story in Europe. Next there are Donnie Moyer and Bill Donley, looking very sharp. They are bragging on the fact that they have finally paid for their own barber shop. Rod Albertson is really beaming over the fact that his basketball team just won the state championship. You can’t blame him. Next is Janet Roberts, Nancy Blake, Elaine Ugie Larr, and Betsy Rhinehart Griffith who just today opened up the Misty Sea Salon with them- selves as beauticians. Also there is Frances Foster who is head telegraph operator. She brought a tele- gram from Kenneth Wilcox, who is with the Air Force in Greenland, saying that he couldn’t come. Next is Phyllis Cox Sickels, who just got home from overseas with her husband and children. There’s Martha Emler looking very trim in Air Force blue. Also there’s Karen Balo, who is now head commercial teacher. Next is Keith Pepper, who is now head of the fire department. And there’s Gary Carson sketching pictures for the new homes he is building. Next to him is Francis Dawson who furnished the cokes for tonight since he owns the Coca-Cola busi- ness. Some faces are missing. I hear Susan Spencer is working on an experiment for the government. Also Pearl Jones Peters can’t be here since she just gave birth to triplets. As I look at the program then I see that Larry Endsley, the television comedian, and John Dovenbarger, the guitar player, will be in charge of the entertainment. Eddie Grace also can’t be here for his band is playing at Dream Inn in New York. Otherwise this ought to prove to be an enjoyable evening. Executive Head KENNETH C. ROSCOE In the year of 1956, a Safari of 29 members set out on a four year journey into the wild and strange jungles of education. It was a difficult struggle, 9 didn’t complete the journey, while one came aboard at various stops along the way. During our first year out, Mr. Brown became our guide. We selected as leader John McKee and his assistant was Donna Lowery. The first leg of our journey came to an end. The second year of our journey, Paul Miller was selected as leader with John McKee, Beverly Robin- son, and Sandra Stipes as our staff. Mr. Brown was again our guide. We became concerned with finances for entertainment on our caravan during the third year and for staging our final review and class trip. Now that all preparations were made we journied into our last two years of the Safari. John McKee was still our faithful leader, his pack was Joe Kirker, vice president; Beverly Robinson, secretary; Sandra Stipes, Finance Officer and Mr. Reifski, our guide. For entertaining the caravan a play was presented entitled, “Aron Slick from Pumpkin Creek.” A feast is held every year for the senior members on the Safari, being junior members we prepared a feast which was known as a Prom. As our journey entered the fourth and final year, only 21 members remained, 11 girls and 10 boys. Our leader once again was John McKee, under the agreement that if any tragedy occured Paul Miller would take over the leadership. During this year we had many adventures, such as time out for a chow stand at a big pow wow for all the people of that. land. The caravan acquired a cooler and served refresh- ments at the basketball games. After our journey on a safari into the fields of education, our members will journey into the ad- ventures of a new world of life and responsibility. Plans for the future will vary in many fields. As our journey draws to an end, our last adven- ture will be Commencement and a Class trip. Now that it is ending we realize just how important this journey has been to us and will guide us for the rest of our lives. 86 Faculty CLYDE OLINGBR—Muskingum, B.S. in Education. Major: Geology.
