',i'1 F1..,'f fx-lil' SINAITH MILLS CLASS HlSTORY Of the present senxor class of fxfteen boys and f1fteen gxrls thlrteen of them came from the Smxth Mllls Dxstrxct Nxne of these are g1rls and four boys Somewhere along the l1ne 42 boys and g1rls have been lost from the class Because there were 54 fxrst graders entermng Sm1thM1l1s school on September 6 1937 wxth Margaret Gabhart r1d1ng herd One of the clauns to fame IS that most of us passed from the fxrst to the second grade wxth Mlss Margaret Crenshaw as teacher and on to the thlrd grade wxth Mlss Elxzabeth Gabhart teacher The fourth grade IS memorable to us for several events lncludxng mak xng weekly book reports compxlxng aweekly newspaper art traxnxng and a May Day celebratlon due to the planning of Mrs Agnes Lee Culver Our flfth grade year we recall as the year ln wluch the war started Our war act1v1t1es for the succeedxng years were dxrected by the teachers Mrs Althalene K Porter Mrs Agnes Lee Culver and other Junlor l-hgh teachers The classes partxcxpated xn scrap 1ron and scrap paper drlves and the gather ing of mxlkweed pods food conservatlon drxves and sunxlar act1v1txes Mxss Georgene Crawford was prxnclpal durxng our seventh and eighth grade years In the seventh grade our war act1v1ty was the producmg of an lndxan play for the benefxt of a Red Cross Drxve lt was xn our Freshman year that Mr Lewis N Johnson became prlnclpal The class of fifty four pupxls whxch en tered the fxrst grade had now dwmdled to forty two The next year brought dxsaster to the communxty mn the form of destruc txon of our school by fxre lt occurred durlng the flrst month of school and w1th1n the next two weeks the County Board of Educatxon had decxded to send the nxnth tenth eleventh and twelfth grades to Corydon to school lt was with much uncertaxmty and apprehensxon that we entered a new school VN e wxll always be grateful for the kxnd receptxon we recexved and we are proud to be graduates of thx school 18 .1 r 1 1 n 1 ' .
