Words really can't describe our friendship, but always know I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! Don't forget Tesh LOVE: BER TESH The Door This poem is about that great big Door, That we've all been preparing for. Some teachers taught well, and were very cool. Some teachers were bogus, and tough like stool. Some females were friendly, - actually nice, Others were wenches, and had eyes cold as ice. Some guys were nice, didn't care what you wear, Others are cocky with their noses in the air. Some of us liked to party others just played sports. Everyone had their own thing, hobbies and clubs of all sorts. We waited for Fridays, and used them well. We hated those Mondays, especially first bell. We'll all remember those times, both good and bad. Remembering the Good ole days will make us all sad. But nevertheless. and all the while, As we walk through that Door, let's remember to smile. TAKE CARE, Bobby CHS is a great school, and this has been a wonderful year. LWA IWLYFEIAS. Suzanne, you've been a great friend, and I am glad forthe time we've shared. The Spartans not only remained undeafted in the Valley League for the second year in a row, but also maintained the number one position in both the State and Valley League rankings before losing to Mountain View in the second round of the State Playoffs. Coach Gary Beck, who recieved the honor of Valley League Coach of the Year, was pleased with the efforts of the players and especially those who made All League. He felt leading the team offensively were Matt Williams, Derek Heyden, Brian Champion, and Dan Blus. Doug Silbernagel, Brian Hortch, Ron Burchard, and Mike Hedges were noted as the defensive leaders. Commenting on the year as a whole, Brian Champion felt, We accomplished several goals by winning the Valley League and being undefeated, but our quest for the State Championship was stopped short by the one point loss at Mountain View. As for next year's prospects, Coach Beck feels, We have a good ' group coming back that contributed a lot to this year's team. 1. Dan Blus concentrates while letting the defense take a turn. 2. Fisher stated, this year there are several differences in the Student Council. I feel we're acheiving more concrete things and by the end of the year I hope a difference will be noticeable. Future projects involving Student Council include: different sorts of assemblies, programs, dances, and a bonfire. Also, the members are trying to install clocks in a few halls and are proposing the idea of expanding the student parking lot. Its adviser is math teacher Paul Ashdown, who says all he really does is super- viseg the older members teach the newer members what to do. The main job of the Fire Squad is to make sure all rooms are empty and to find out which alarm was pulled. 'They also make sure that students exit the school in an orderly fasion. There were 14 members in the Fire Squad this past year. The President was Gary Tiscornia, whose main job was to set meetings and schedule fire drills. He accomplished this with the help of Vice-President Richard Tomschin and Secretary Melanie Smith. The club met ap- proximately once a month. Its purpose is to develop personal character and leadership qualities in its members according to Student Store is business, friendship My favorite thing about working in our student store is having everyone come to me to talk. It's a great way to see lots of people, commented senior Jayne Eckhardt. The popularity ofthe store comes as no surprise to anyone who heads in that direction during breaks or after school. There is usually a mob crowded around it, with each person pushing their way to get the can- dy, soda pop, fresh pop corn, T-shirts, mugs, cups and other Spartan paraphemalia they desire. Due in part to the demanding crowd and in part to the tight schedules of the seniors, there are four workers helping out this year. Gina Thompson, Annie Brown, Jayne Eckhardt and Pam Sanders assist manager Kristin Eves in running the store smoothly. The store workers are fun to be with, and the job gives me a different atmosphere to see my friends in, said Eves. Besides providing a place to socialize, the store gives seniors an opportunity to learn about the business world. It's fun interacting with everyone and being a manager - it's a different experience, ex- pressed Eves. Supervisor Larry Turner further commented that the student store workers are the most interesting and most challeng- ing of all the people who work for him. UNI'- adviser Paul Kovash. The spring play, The Solid Gold Cadillac, is a mid-50's comedy and a popular broadway play. It is about a little old lady who goes to a stockholders meeting and unintentionally disrupts the whole company. Wallace explained his three reasons for choosing this particular play. First, the fall play Q Antigone' 'J was a tragedy, so he thought a balance would be to direct a comedy. Secondly, in order for the actresses! actors to learn more about acting, he likes to choose plays with different styles and histories. This year silk screening T-shirts has been greater than in the past because of the availability of them. There have been no major changes in the AV Department recently, since the basic policies have been already established, Brown said. He added that the classes run smoothly when everyone follows the rules. Senior Randy Arnold said, It's a great class. You can work on projects by yourself and have that satisfied feeling when you're done. 3: Freshman Mike Lovelady prepares to make a print. 4: Megan Noak checks her project status. PE, Health offer variety, basics There was a need for more Slimnastics classes, and I thought it sounded fun, stated Barb Locey. The different seasons determine which P.E. classes are highly enrolled. Since Slimnastics is popular year round, Locey was asked to teach it two periods, while English teacher Blou Carman still teaches one class. The P.E. department offers a great variety of sports and activities, so one can choose the sport he likes. It was a fun class fbasketballl, but its too bad Mr. fGaryQ Beck always had to lose in Horse, commented senior Derek Heyden. The P.E. department includes Beck, Carman, Department Coodinator Mike Doherty, Locey ,Judy Lovre and jack Pinion. The focus of Home Economics is changing from cooking and sewing to preparing young people for their future lives. Such areas include consumer education, nutrition, and family life, stated one of the two Home Ec instructors, Barbara Stalick, The ways in which the Home Ec classes have differed from the 1, past years is that they are working toward the future in ways we can a use today. They use a computer much more for storing menues, Library sees increased use Librarian john Rawlinson is happy with the great use of the library this year. - Reorganization of the library is in process. The stall' is putting on new spine labels, changing card catalogues, ordering new magazines and is now working on analyzing books on plays and making author in- dexes. Our library is greatly improved in the last three or four years: lots more teachers, a lot more students, and the people using the library are more serious than before, commented Rawlinson. He likes noting the fact that at some breaks and during PAT periods, the library is packed, and hardly a seat can be found empty. This makes him feel that his resources are being put to good use. As for his assistant, Pat,Miller, Rawlinson claims, You couldn't ask for a better one. Senior Thor Stadsvold said, Auto Mechanics is a very important . Dept. sees new Mac, dual goal In the Computer Department, a new MacIntosh caused a lot of excite- ment because it represents a new generation in computers, commented Department Coordinator Dennis Cor- liss. There are two major goals of the Computer Department, according to Corliss. The first goal is to teach the use of computers for solving pro- blems. The second goal is to use computers to help people learn other things than computers. Many teachers from other deparments use programs relating to their own subject matter to enhance teaching. Computer was a tough but fulfilling class because of the long hours spent on each project, said senior Cindy Schaumburg. The two teachers in the Computer Department are Corliss and Bob Anderson who is teaching computer for the first time. 5. Senior Andrew Fluharty 4. It was a time when people took pride in their schools, commented Rick Wallace. To that end, some of the graduates of Corvallis High School have returned to work with all of us young adults. This is, of course, after completing a few endeavors of their own, from marriage and divorce to trips overseas and working at Crescent Valley. So, on this 50th Anniversary of Corvallis High School, we present to you seven individuals of a previous generation. The eldest, and most likely the wisest, is the Monster of the Snack Shack, janet Burgess, from the Class of 1963. We had a good time. We didn't know what the word 'bore' meant... the most mischievous thing that I ever did was try to get drunk on Coke and aspirin. All I got was a bloody nose when I went to the drag races. Burgess added, ' 'I had jim Withrow for Driver's Ed. CWCJ used to drive him bananas by shaking year celebration W . M... W, ,........ . . . A , , ...atm - V r I . . .......n R Q 3 4 our charm braclets. She concluded, The kids you thought were being snobbish and stuck-up were actually very shy. Now that I'm forty I know that. I loved all my years in high school, even the ones I'm working now. Next up chronologically is Rick Wallace, Class of 1966. He graduated, ...at the begining of the time the establishment, if you will, came under a great deal of scrunityf' School was the center of people's activities. Very few people had jobs. Fashion was beginning to change, I remember the first kid who showed up with what was then considered long hair... so it was a time of transition. i Remembering Corvallis Wallace said, Corvallis was still very much a small town. The college was the primary force, I think, in the community. This was the tail end of the Civil Rights move- ment. It really was a time of change in the country, but it really heck of a guy and he made a lot of sense. Whatever he says, I'll second. He concluded, I think there're a lot of quality people that went through then, and I teach now because there are a lot of quality people now. Barb Locey, Class of 1970, said, Probably the biggest difference was, we had 1800 students... things were much more crowded. I don't think it was as party oriented as it is now. In the area of girls sports, The exposure and participation in sports is much more broad... We had four sports available to girls back then. I played football, basketball, baseball, so a great deal of my time was spent on athletics... Even though I enjoyed that a great deal, I wish now maybe I'd have gotten involved in some other things, said Gary Beck, Class of 1971, cooling over a Pepsi Free. Concerning clothes, Beck said, We certainly weren't as creative in our dress as they are today and I'm not sure if that's good or bad... You wore slacks and hard-soled shoes. Girls just started wearing pants to school. In the area of student-teacher relations, Beck related, I got along well with them, I think. I always had a lot of respect for them and did what I was told... Sather and all of us, we went through the tail end of those sixties, so it was a bit different. Seated by the periodicals, Scott Lasswell, the Class of 1971, began, The heater right outside the cafeteria was where the so-called jocks would hang out... that was ' the' spot lshades of Gary Beck1. Athletically, You had many more peo- ple participation in two or three sports. Lasswell said, On the weekends you'd put your girlfriend on hold and go play basketball at St. Mary's or go play miniature golf. 1 hadn't had much impact in this community. m From the Class of 1969 came Steve Locey, I was a jock, still am flaughsjf' What did you do for lunch, Mr. Locey?, ...Bob's, King's Table, and A 8: W. That was all we had. About the hot- test spot was Seaton's Barbeque Pit... now it's a paint store. It's across from Custer's. Custer's was always good. Locey used his free time for athletic pursuits. We'd play at St. Mary's or at the... Old Mormon Gym. We'd sneak into the Col- liseum. Played D.C. football... with Gary Beck and Donny Reynolds and all their families. Sather played that, too. We kept stats for our games. Back at school, There were about 2000 students ir1 school and we spent a lot of time squeezing through the halls. ' Uncle Ron Sather, Class of 1968, said, I played football and wrestled for the most part. The only club I was involved in... was a letterman's club. I knew Steve really well. He was the tight end and I was the tadcle on the same side. ...Steve Locey's a1 5 , ,W 1...M.- . really have a lot of potential. Fernjensen Office staffs keep school running Have you ever wondered what keeps CHS running smoothly? It's the CHS Administration - made up of the Attendance Office, the Main Office, the AthleticlActivities Office and the Nursc's Office. The Attendance Office, run by Shirley Cole and Val McCullough, is doing everything new this year based on a complete computer system. The system is faster and more accurate and helped create a more positive image of us with students and parents, explained Cole. The Main Office is running well considering the large personnel change-over, commented jan Walker. There is a variety of things that need to be done, but it's a lot of fun, added jane Hogan. The Athletic!Activities Office is the home of Athletic!Activity Direc- tor Larry Turner and deals with everything from athletic paperwork to fund raising. The office is doing ex- tremely well, 'according to jan Walker, who works in both the Main Office and the Activities Office. Working full time this year, Anna In- gram commented that, The 2 students I've come into contact with Custodians keep school in shape The custodians at CHS work hard to make the school and school grounds look presentable. The worst part of the job, says Grime Fighter Darlene Hackett, is the vandalism of windows being broken, lockers being written on, and writing on walls. There are ten custodians all together, and the jobs are split equal- ly among them. Other jobs done by the staff are repairing drapes, cleaning classrooms, cleaning carpets, fixing door frames and windows, and clean- ing stairwells. Cooks add 'Gertie, ' sundae bar This year there have been two major additions to the cafeteria. The frst addition is a new milk shake machine named Gertie in the snack shack. There was a narne-the-machine contest for CHS members and the secretaries chose Genie as the winner according to cook janet Burgess. The second addition to the cafetaria was an ice-cream sundae bar. The best selling items in the cafeteria are the warm chocolate chin cookies, said Burgess. Another favored item is the salad bar. 1: janet Burgess whistles while she works. 2: Cooks: Rose Gardner, Joann Kirby, Emily McCraken, janet Burgess, Lila Mason, jane Gorsuch. The new principal said he was impressed with the students' positive attitudes, the strong parent support and the excellent staff. One of Golden's goals is to main- tain equilibrium between academics, athletics and activities. We're look- ing at sample letters and symbols for the academic awards program, he said. That's beginning to take shape. Another major goal is to upgrade the facility, including painting and repairing classrooms. Golden also expressed a desire to see Earth Science incorporated into the CHS science program. Golden came to CHS directly from LaGrande, where he had been since 1975. Before that, he was a school administrator in western Illinois. Coming from a dry climate fEastern Oregonj, Golden said he has adjusted to the Wlillarnette Valley and enjoys the early springs and late falls. Of the rain, he said, I don't have to shovel it. Golden has a wife flrenej, a son fAlanJ and a daughter fAnnej. He maintains an active routine of rapid walking and thrice-weekly handball sessions. He also downhill skis, backpacks, hunts and fishes. On a more private level, he gardens both flowers and vegetables, as well as um- piring Little League baseball. He en- courages physical activity. In the evenings he enjoys watching high school sports and baking. I'm a pie freak and a chocoholic, said Golden. To him curling up with a good book means reading Uris, Follett or a historical novel. Assistant Principal john Pugh Assistant Principal john Pugh has served CHS for 15 years, working with five different principals and seven other assistant principals. Overall, he said, this is as good a year as we've had. One of Pugh's major respon- sibilities is the master scheduling of students into classes. In addition, he oversees the Course Description Handbook, data processing, discipline A-K, grades, registration, room assignments and the following departments: Library, Mathematics, Science, PE and Computer. Pugh pointed out that CHS is the pilot school in the district for a new, computerized attendance system. He credited the staff and students for the high morale at CHS. Assistant Principal Eda Soderquist Assistant Principal Eda Soderquist is starting to know kids and faces in her second year at CHS, and she likes what she's doing. As attendance officer, Soderquist is involved in the new computer system in the attendance office. She said the system will eventually include the ability to pick out kids who qualify for Saturday School and credit denial, but that working the bugs out of the system has been a monumental task. Soderquist is also responsible for student aides, junior Block and stu- dent teachers, substitutes, discipline L-Z and the following departments: AV, Home Economics, Nursing Ser- vices, English, Foreign Language and Fine Arts. ix .ax I Schan Alba Christa Allison Gordon Anderson Yo Atteberry Cory Badger josh Barnes Alcxio Baum David Belden Hillary Bell Bob Bending Chris Berry Jeni Birken Bonnie Block Lucretia Boissonou jason Bowling Lowell Bradley jessica Bragg Ann Brauti am l if l 419- A A, X PWS 5, Mw- , Martin Branarn john Bressler Regina Broich Stephanie Brouwer David Brown Monty Brown Cautrena Bullock Corey Burback Carolynn Burnett Mark Carpenter james Carr Thomas Casey jason Cerruti Alex Cerda Vanh Chachaleune Glen Champlin Siv-ing Chang Nicole Chorak jennifer Christopherson Paul Cihak Debra Cleveland April Cline Cary Cline David Cochran Anne Constantine jennifer Converse Donnie Cook Melissa Cook Thray Crawford Athena Cruse Jeanne Cullison john Cutting Jeannie Deagen Daran Deealesta Brandon Dominguez Peggy Donivan 'josh Dorn Christa Downard Abe Drabkin jason Dufault Thomas Dykes William Edmondson Michelle Eggers jennifer Eikleberry jay Ellett Valaric Escalon Margo Evashevski Sadhu Feibel Estevan Fernandez jim Ford jennifer Fowell jennifer Frazier Kelly Frazier Tammy Fuchigami Tanya Gale Michael Galvan john Gird Anne Gottensrrater Darby Grady Lithia Green 98 vi O' f' 7 .,....-1 W s,,m.sN-Ng 'lar-.... .hav '1 -...x ,Ii lk s ?L,.,1:y y U-T757 Tina Gmbbs Leonard Hake Amy Hansen Patrick Harding Sam Hardman Lance Harper Todd Harris Erik Hass Sabrina Haswell Lindsey Hathaway Mark Hawley julie Heath Kimberly Heilig David Hendercr Kirk Heyden Andrea Heywood Ana Hilde Barbara Hill Dennis Hill jenna Huber Troy Hoban jay Hobson Karic Holland Teri Horina john Hugo jason jack Polly janosik Bill johnson Raymond johnson Rod johnson Stafford johnson Kyle Kaagan ,Iurinda Kahl Dan Keeling Susan Kenncke Marci Kessell Marja Kibby jim Kittcrman Kara Koenitzcr Dennis Kohl Tami Koiva jimmy Labahn Pam Lammers Alex Larsen-Chamberlain Andrea Larson Elzunia Laver Sharron Lee Kyle Lemkc Sandra Lindberg Charley Linderman Andrea Lister 100 'Q' f Y x E AW' 5 a ww' w :S is W5 at 'f :SI I P 1 o jennifer Lloyd joshua Lonnquist Michael Lovelady jamie Lutz Michelle Madrid Douglas Maggard Denise Margeson jenny Marstall Kristi Martin Tricia Mattson Paige Mclntire jon Mclntosh Ruth McMahan Amy Metcalf Penny Mickel Bruce Miller Sharon Miller Stacy Montgomery jason Moore Karla Moore Pascha Naderi-Nejad Ellen Nagy Terry Nash Jeanne Nathman Karl Neyhan Nhu-Ngoc Nguyen Thao Nguyen Mclisa Nichols Laina Nixon Megan Noak jim Olds Lisa Olsen jason Olson Ben Orrman juli Oulerop Harrier Owen Kris Paronto Terry Pennington jefferson Peters Astrid Peterson Chris Pitcher justin Plackett Shad Pollari Lisa Pond jenny Potter Matt Rennie Ken Rhodes Joanna Rinker Eric Risen Richard Robideaux Lisa Robnert 102 ggi?
