oyce Kirk Awarded As Humanitarian A humanitarian is a person devoted to promoting the welfare ofthe human race. Joyce Kirk is a person who has shown special concern for the welfare of the human race and this year was awarded the Humanitarian Award. This deserved annual recognition was started this year by lVlr. Garland Sprick, a teacher at Cheldelin Junior High and a Corvallis High graduate, who felt the need for some student or adult to be commended on their help toward others. A senior at CHS, Joyce gave many hours of her spare time helping mentally retarded children. She did this through various projects and organizations. Representing Benton County, at the National Association for Retarded Childrens' First National Youth Conference in lb Portland, Joyce discussed volunteer work for the mentally retarded with 150 nation-wide represented youths. She spent much of her 1967 summer vacation helping retarded children in a swimming program and also taught at a summer day camp for the retarded. This small Corvallis school was organized through the YIVICA and BARC lBenton Associa- tion for Retarded Children.l Under this same group of people, Joyce took some youngsters to Portland for a day at the zoo. Once a month, she taught Sunday school to retarded children in an interdenominational church class. Joyce did all of these services in a very unselfish manner and through higher education plans to specialize in teaching the mentally retarded.
