Our first leader was Tom Hoyt. The biggest event of our eighth grade year was the field trip in connection with our Oregon History classes to Salem, Oregon City, and other places of historical interest. Our Calico-Cord Prince and Princess were Tom Hoyt and Jan Marquiss. We held a potlucklfor our parents, had a skate, and wound up our first year at CHS with a picnic on the school grounds. Our freshman year began with a dance we sponsored for the incoming eighth graders. This year a girl, Judy Walls, was chosen as our class president. The Won- derful Year was filled with good times and much excitement. We received our first glimpse of State Tournament action, for we went to State in both football and basketball. Our class led the school for top grades, the semester of l955, with 13 students receiving l's. We combined our talents with those of the Sophomore class and presented a most successful Froshmore Assembly . We chose Rex Newton and Jan Marquiss as our Calico-Cord Prince and Princess. Mike Myers was chosen class president in our sophomore year. A school tra- dition was changed that year. The school colors were changed from Maroon and Blue to Columbia-Blue and White. The Circus was another important event in our Sophomore year. We chose Jerry Terway for our class Princess. The Sling Shot and Bottle Booth was our addition to the success of the Circus. This year was also the first for collecting toys and having a Miss Merry Christmas dance with a princess from each class. Lynda Long was our princess, Calico-Cord Daze was a success and our Prince and Princess was Jim Fitz and Jeralyn Nibler. Closing this Wonderful Year, our class participated in a picnic. As Juniors our first big event was the Toy Drive. We selected Judy Edwards as our candidate for Miss Merry Christmas. She was escorted by our class president Gene Milbrath. Jan Marquiss won the Voice of Democracy Speech Contest and re- ceived a trip to Washington D.C. Our Junior Sales chairmen were Steve Roath and Maggie Kruger, with their leadership and the co-operation of the whole class, we broke the sales record! Calico-Cord Daze got underway with Dwight Hunter and Linda Feller as Prince and Princess. In the spring, we again traveled to Eugene where we participated in the State Basketball Tournament. The most important event was the Junior Prom. We selected Song of the South as the theme and Shirley Small as the general chairman. We began the last of our Wonderful Years by winning the student body tick- et race and a free bus ride to the South Salem football game. Queen Sue Martin I reigned over the numerous activities of Homecoming. During this week the annual Senior Chili was held. Next came the New Years Eve Formal with all its balloons and noisemakers. This occasion was reigned over by Gayle Mishler and Elaine Jorgenson. Then came the day when we were measured for our caps and gowns . . . . Graduation became a real thing and every senior realized that his high school days would soon be completed. Looking back we realize that these were really THE WONDERFUL YEARS .
