Their first claim to fame was winning the annual student body ticket race. For this they got a free bus ride to the Albany football game. They had their skates potluck and picnic and a party given to them by the ninth graders. They also were the first class to have an eighth grade rally squad. In their second year they were under the able leadership of Alex Shevalier. The first thing they did was welcome the new eighth graders with a party after a football game. They had a couple of skates a picnic and a potluck. The big item in their sophomore year was the All-School Circus. Their class president Gary Thayer secured for them the pink lemonade booth which did a smashing business. Their lovely princess was Charlotte Ralls. 'They also had a sophomore assembly American in Paris the first of its kind. When they became iuniors they began to demonstrate their capability with our Junior Sales which under the leadership of Anne Smith and Jim Kurth set a new record for sales. The biggest and best dance of the year was Shangri- L the Junior Prom under the direction of Karen Hunter and Gary Thayer. They participated in the Junior-Senior play January Thaw directed by Mr. Reedy. They had a potluck and a picnic at Colorado Lake. Leland Hall wielded the gavel during their next to last year. For their biggest, busiest, and best year they elected Johnny Graham as class president, and for the first time in C.H.S. history since 1927, a girl, Carolyn Newton, was elected Student Body President. Their first class activity was the annaul spaghetti feed before the Albany football game. Along with the juniors they produced the play, Brother Goose. They also had a senior banquet and a picnic at Benton Lane. They ended the year with a bang-up all-night graduation party put on for them by the P.T.A. What kind of years have they been? Years like all years, filled with events that alter and illuminate our times, and YOU WERE THERE. If , X X, Senior bottlvs El9lWTl1 Gfaders car wash Block of Dmcs Teens against Polio was one of the most successful money raising campaigns ever carried out by the Student Body, and showed what can really be done when all the classes cooperate. The campaign was started with a speech, at a kick-off assembly, by Sharon Landers, of Roseburg, a victim of polio. With only one week in which to raise the money, there was plenty of concentrated effort by every class. Over S250 was collected at the coin toss during the halftime of a basketball game. The Juniors alone contributed 5134. The following evening the bottle and hanger collection began. Each class was assigned a district, and about 35250 worth of coat hangers and bottles was collected. Saturday Girls' League sponsored the Block of Dimes, and SMS in change was lined up on a downtown sidewalk. During the week requests had been sold for the Platter Parade at lO cents a piece. The program started at TO P.M. and con- tinued until 7 A.M. S128 worth of requests was sold, and money was collected in several other ways, such as a slave sale, shoe shine, car wash, and popcorn sales. Wind-up of the campaign was the March of Dimes Twerp Dance, sponsored by FBLA, which was ruled over by Miss March of Dimes, Meda Brandt, senior. The 31,400 turned over to the National Polio Drive was especially significant as it was the first all-out drive against Polio attempted by the CHS Student Body. JUDY YERIAN Editor I I I O With lack of experience and a new publisher, the Chintimini staff had some pretty hectic moments, but, with the help of Mr. Quale, everything worked out. At least, if practice makes perfect, we should be al- most perfect, because we've certainly had the practice. So, now our year's work is yours, and we hope you enioy it. This year Quill and Scroll became a better-known club, establishing itself by putting out, with the help of the High-O-Scope staff, the first school magazine. Due to our unusual weather, school was closed the day the magazine came out and copies had to be mailed out. The officers of Quill and Scroll were invited to con- duct the initiation of members in South Salem and this established a chapter of the organization there. MARY LOU NICHOLS President 2? JEAN SHIRLEY President BILL EDWARDS Vice President Waldaaaf cuadafz glance Sacdelq Chandelle, whose purpose is to promote scholar- ship, leadership, service, and character among under- classmen, was a very busy club this year. Two initi- ations were held, fall and winter, and every week they helped Vina Mosses of the Welfare Department clean out her storage room. Discussion groups were held in the grade schools to help acquaint the seventh graders with high school life. The social activities were a potluck and dance at the Federated Churches in the fall and a field trip in the spring. avi. Selection is still based upon the qualities of character, scholar- ship, leadership, and service but a student need no longer submit a petition. For membership selection, and as a service to the school, Torch now maintains a student activity file. This file, along with office grade records, is used to choose candidates for membership. Many members were able to attend the several state and district conferences because of the close proximity of the Oregon State College campus at which many of them were held. The formal initiation-banquet in February to which the girls' mothers were invited was undoubtedly the social event of the year. Income from their cake and eclair sales was, in part, contributed to the purchase of a Red Cross wheel chair. Officers: President, Jan Crawford, Vice President, Kathy Mosierg Secretary, Rosetta Brandtg Treasurer, Doris Ashton. 7.7,-4. F.F.A. is still the biggest club in C.H.S., financially. Their greatest income was from their TOO acres of farmland, but this was supplemented by the sale of popcorn, machine parts, and anti-freeze. The Parent-Son Banquet and Award Night were their main social activities, but their service and social ac- tivities were many. They cared for the cemetery, bought a wheel chair, hauled bleachers, repaired their shop and provided a truck for the Mary's Peak Trek. Our F.F.A. chapter has been active in the state or- ganization in demonstrations, vocational contests, judg- ing teams and fairs, and a valuable part of the whole community.
