Senior History Wide-eyed and eager, we entered the high school and took our place on the bottom rung of the ladder. Mike Weatherbee was elected our first class president. Even though we spent most of the year getting used to our new environment, we managed to have several skates and a class picnic, at which many of us were bad little kids and went boating and swimming after the advisers had gone home. As a result, our next year's party was confined to the school grounds! After finishing our first year, we named Bob Cramer as our frosh prexy. Under his leadership the class sponsored its first all school rally dance after one of the basketball games. With the help of the class council, a barn dance, held in the gym, was organized to celebrate the end of our second step on the ladder Our sophomore year was a busy one, for we had to sponsor a talent assembly and take part in the all-school circus. Prexy Clayton Carlson managed to get us a 'pie throwing booth, which was one of the biggest attractions at the circus. Bev Nelson was class princess. Achievements during our fourth year in high school included the class play, Turn Back the Clock, directed by Mr. William Reedy, and the annual Iunior Prom, which was planned around the theme, Blue Hawaii. Ted Davenport handled the gavel well that year, as our class president. Playing an important part in the success of our hardwork- ing Iunior Sales Committee was Mr. Strong. Reaching the top of the ladder, we found much success in our last year in high school. Three one- act plays were presented under the direction of Mrs. Ruby Ruth Smith, and a basketball score board was selected as the class gift to the school. Presi- dent Bob Iensen promoted many other class activi- ties, such as the winning of the student body ticket race and a class chili feed before the Lebanon bas- ketball game. Q The class of '53 now leaves C. H. S. with unfor- gettable memories of five most wonderful years. Nancy Aasum Barbara Albin Shirley Iune Alleman Ianet L. The Spartans started out at the beginning ol the season with a green team and missed the veteran men who had graduated. Under the able tutoring of Coach Twenge and Coach Niemi the Spartans improved and gained in ex- perience with each week and with every game that they played. The Spartans had their ups and downs throughout the season. They played their best brand of ball when they upset the highly touted Gresham Gophers and when they trampled the Albany Bulldogs. Loren Sapp. and Don Powell: on both offense and defense, Cap't.Vern Ellison and Doug Bennion were dynamos of en- ergy. flncidentally, Cap't.Vern Ellison pounced on 8 out of ll fumbles that Corvallis recov- ed from the opposition.l The backfield consisted of all Iuni- ors, with Wendell Scott, who led the Big Six in individual scoring, and Larry Edwards, outstanding on offense. with Mike Wetherbee, the only 3- year letterman, outstanding on defense. The team didn't go as far as We would have liked to have seen them go. but they played good clean ball all season. Everyone played as a member ot the team, instead of as an individual. This also threw the Spartans into a tie with Albany for a first place in the Eastern Division of District 7. With only three seniors on the team, the squad was relatively inexperienced at the beginning ot the sea- son. As the season progressed, the squad became more and more experienced as they played some of the top teams in the state. Showing their real worth as the season came to a close. the Spartans won ten out of their last fourteen games. Summing up the season, we can be proud of our team. Second Place A The Spartans, by tying for first in District 7 play, landed a place in the District tournament. The team went in as an underdog but came out as second place winner. In the iirst game, the boys rolled over Toledo 51 to 36. Corvallis had control of the entire game, the fellows playing together as a well balanced team. As Albany had beaten Newport, we played the Bulldogs in the finals. The story of this game was that both teams played hard and fast to the finish, but Albany played a little better and won 57 to 58. All the boys played good hard ball and were true sportsmen. We can be justly proud of our teamsand coaches. Capt. Bob Iensen holding trophy. 134 Coach Badgley and Manager Tom Shideler J.V. Basketball With a 16 win and only 5 loss record,-we can certainly say that the Sparbabe basket- ball team turned in a very good season. Coach Badgley did an excellent job at the reins, as the record shows. Kent Matheson was high point man for the season, but Ierry Handy and Fred Bennion were just a few points behind respectively. Keith Borrall turned in the best free-throw record with a .733 percentage. Looking back over the season, we are proud of the record the team compiled and know that most of the boys will make a good account of themselves on the varsity teams oi the future. STANDING: Shideler, Grahm, Borrall, Lunde, Walters, Gambee, Beer, Coach Badgley. 135 Traclc With only five returning lettermen, Coach Olson will be faced with a rebuilding season. It's a 'young team with lots of promise. Returning lettermen are Bob Byrd, Ron Taylor. Iohn Yost, Iim Bienhoff and Vern Ellison-the only two-year lettermen. The Spartan Cross Country team, under the leadership of Paul Iohnson. had just a lair season this year with the squad consisting mainly of sopho- mores and juniors. The high-light of the season was when Leonard Sletto won the Iunior Varsity Cross Country Crown. Boxing This was boxing's second year at C.H.S. under the able direction of Coach Richard Thaw. Boxing is not an inter-school sport but more of a recreational activity carried on by the boys tor their own enjoyment. The high-light of the year was the Blue-C Smoker, at which there were several bouts with boxing members as participants. The boys all enjoyed their iistic season, feeling that they had learned something while having a good time. and they are look- ing forward to next year's season. Sitting: Lester, Prell, Masey, Yost, Coach Thaw Standing, Derrickson, E.g Uhden, Barstow, Dar- rell, Barstow, Dennis, Tourville. Wrestling Three Spartan wrestlers participated in the State Tournament this year. They were, Vern Ellison, Les Hilderbrand, and Gordon Gretz. Nineteen boys turned out for the squad, and it can be said that they all participated and had a good time in doing so. The number of boys that turned out this year wasn't quite large enough to shape a Well-rounded squad. but Coach Niemi hopes to see more boys turn out next year.
