As seventh graders, we attended classes in the over-crowd- ed high school during the afternoon half of a double shift. With the inaugural of the 7-5 school system the class of '52 became the first eighth graders in Corvallis High school history. As official high schoolers we made our presence known by top- ping the seniors in a hard-fought student body ticket race. An all-time high of 99.3 per cent of -classnfmembers ewitlstiek class-conducted campaign, headed by president, Ierry Hiller. The freshman year activities included the usual class skate and picnic under the leader- ship of Don Scott, class president. It was hoped to establish a tradition, as we feted the eighth grade with a party of games, movies, and danc- ing. For our sophomore year, we elected a girl. Nancy Krehbiel, to head class affairs, and found ourselves becoming an established part of Cor- vallis High activities, clubs, and sports. Keynoting the year the entire class's efforts were put forth in the prom, Showboat , and presented as a gift to the senior class. Howard Bell wielded the gavel during 1949-51, which was an All-School ' yecrrfand..- n- kins representing the juniors in the Circut Court. The final climax to five years of high school came when, as seniors, we stuck our thumbs into every activity pie. Again we presented a successful dramatic production, Ladies of the Iury at two performances. The accumulated treasury went towards buying the traditional senior gift to the school. And although not yet history, the class of '52, like those before us, will graduate and leave behind five big years full of experiences that will soon be but a memory. 43 xmwxxm Sax 'CIKSSXXK 9eXX P+ Un fgta 9 WX X699 Y,-Xixsov N6 SNXRYS s . ki' Ak Q X-if P4 'V v ' X :J wie Qfa PUPULAR ae Hand-:bs Cb ual' Stuczrt 6'0lTS'l' Krehbiel UGHCY e Dick 41057 P4 7191000 Marilyn B ibso rodslm Iv Tom Bla l1l0J'l'0!P!fl I cl-stone 04191 Dick dfgqzg il - V' R . :gs N Destiny is not cr matter of chance, it is cr matter of choicep it is not cz thing to be waited for, it is cx thing to be achieved. Marilyn Bradshaw, 'Editor Chintimini l've only ten minutes to write this before it goes to the printers, and it is a little difficult to think when the Assistant Editor keeps pronouncing roster rooster , and I'm trying to find out who the fella is in the back row of Sparskis, when the President, Dick Olson, doesn't even know. I wonder if the weather will be good for pictures next week? Probably will rain as it always does when We take pictures. More troubles-I put the carbon paper in backwards. It seems like Iane and I will always do that wrong. Mr. Quale is growing short on patience l'm afraid. You can easily see why though. The staff would like to thank you Mr. Quale, for all the help and patience you have given us this year. It is no easy job we know and we appreciate all of your help. We have tried our best to do a good job, although we know the book has its weaknesses. Thanks should be given to Mr. Viestenz and his department for their assistance with the art work. If this book meets your expectations, as we of the staff hope it will, we will feel justified in thinking it was through the student's and faculty's co-operation. Alawg Dow Poling, President Boy's League The Corvallis High School Boy's League was reactivated after an interval of seven years. The first objective of the new club was to re-write the outdated Constitution. An intramural program was conducted for all boys that wanted to participate in the many sports offered at the high school. The teams were organized so that all boys of similar age, weight, and height would be competing together. Assemblies were planned throughout the year and the students and faculty helped to put on these assemblies. An all sport night proved to be a great success. This year was chiefly devoted to re-organizing the club. With the support of all boys it should be very active in the years to come. The officers for the year were: Dow Poling, president, Dick Pollard, vice-presidentg Iohn Seibert, secretaryg and Frank Beer, sergeant-at-arms. The adviser was Mr. Badgley. The Sparts were led this year by captain Tom Black- stone and halfback Dwuane Speers, who was voted the most valuable player award by his teammates. Not much larlher. pdl! Pete 'n Andy get the word Big factors in the team's success were the strong throwing arm of quarterback Dow Poling, the excellent field-generalship of sopho- more Frank Beer, who took over for the injured Poling late in the season, the hard- running of Speers and full- back Bill Thompson and the stalwart line play of such men as Blackstone, Young, Andrews, Lawrence, a n cl McDougald. Spar! meets rough going A clear-cut opening day victory over Newberg already behind them, a fired up band of Spartans faced the highly-rated Bend Lava Bears Sept. Z1 on Spartan tield. The Spar- tans proceeded to sweep the startled Bend team off the field in a game which set the Sparts up as one of the better teams in the state. This game was definitely the season's peak, but was followed by victories over Lebanon, 19-O, and Cottage Grove, 7-2. The Spartans, at a low ebb, ran into three tough customers in a row, Eugene, Springfield, and I Salem. The Corvallis men put up a good fight but lost each ol these by a three touch-down margin. The Sparts then snapped out of their lethargy to maul Sweethome 27-U, and in the big game of the year gave the experienced and highly favored Albany bulldogs a real scare be- fore succumbing l8-l2 on the swamp-like Albany field. Challenging some of the toughest com- petition in the state, the 1951-52, senior- laden Corvallis Spartan basketball team compiled an average 10-won and 12-lost. regular season record. Although the Sparts didn't knock off many powerhouses, no team left the Corvallis floor without feel- ing that they had been in a battle. Proba- bly the high-water mark of the season was the night of Ian. 4, when on the Corvallis court, the Sparts outfought and outscored the tough Albany Bulldogs, 54-44. The fol- lowing night, they gave 7-footer Swede Hctlbrook and his Lincoln mates a real scare before succumbing 36-28 in the final quarter.
