I had heard so many positive things about this country and I wanted to see for myself. I found out that most things are true, like everyone seems to be so friendly. I have enjoyed my year at C.H.S. and be- ing able to participate In school and outside school spirit. Thank you all for making my year at Cor- unna High a special year that I will always remember. Kata Heikklla 6 I am Helle van Doom, one of your exchange stu- dents this year. 1 am from the Netherlands. I am staying with the Charles Hegg family. In school I’m a senior so I’ll graduate this year. That Is something I look forward to. I am having a great time being at Corunna High School. My name Is Raul Reyes and I’m from Mexico. I arrived at Corunna High School without any English and I have troubles with almost everything. There are some differences between my school and this school like “Lockers”, because we don’t have them. But, thanks to my teachers and this school I have a new language and a lot of things to say. 7 Seniors — Back In 8 The Past . . . ‘Cheeeeeese What next? The closest to home — save the minor tremors from Ohio’s earthquake — was the earthquake In Mexico which resulted In major devastation of Mexico City Itself. Memorable, also, was the eruption of Nevado del Ruiz on November 13, covering the city Armero, Columbia In 15 feet of ooze, and causing. In part, the rise In the price of coffee. In South Africa, emotions and prejudice blocked logical thinking concerning the problem of apartheid. The result was rioting, fighting, and Increased violence. Six years ago, Americans breathed a sigh of relief as the Iranian hostages were freed. This also marked the beginning of Ronald Reagan’s first term. Unfortunately, terrorism still exists and Is Increasing In Incident — a sad commentary on our technologically advanced society. 7 iH 1i Although airplanes are still the safest mode of travel within the United States, 1985 saw an Increase of widespread airplane crashes — most memorable being the American Military personnel who were killed In a commercial plane crash while In route to the United States. Probably the most depressing national news of 1986 was the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, resulting In the death of all seven crew members. It was to be one of the first flights Involving civilians — In this case a school teacher. Not all of 1985-1986 was so bleak. Various groups of musicians banded together to help raise money for those In need. We had USA for Africa, Band Aid, Farm Aid, and others. One very Important high point of the year were talks between Reagan and Soviet leader Gorbachev. Things went well and many people were optomlstlc and hopeful about nuclear arms reduction. Only time, however, will tell. The competition and fashion rivalry — reported to exist by many journalists — between First Lady Nancy and First Lady Raisa, Is nonexlstant. In Interviews, both of their comments Indicated that they hit It off well — a definite plus to our relations with the Soviets. Nationally, two headaches of last year only Increased In Intensity. The biggest seems to be the rising deficit and attempts to cut. stop, or at least limit It. Many bills have thus been suggested. The plight of the farmers continued, also, as many lost not Just money, but also their land, houses, and other. If not most of all possessions. In the entertainment world, things, as always, changed rapidly. We are no longer flooded by Michael Jackson songs, posters, buttons, commercials, shirts, clothes, and videos. Tina Turner, on the other hand, has risen quite high In popularity — a virtual rags-to-rlches story, and has starred In Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, from the Mad Max series. Men everywhere were envious as Sean Penn became husband to Madonna — especially after photographically artistic talents were revealed. Bruce The Boss Springsteen stole the hearts of much of America with his All-Amerlcan-Boy personal- ity and many enjoyable songs. Television was the appearance of The Cosby Show, starring — you guessed — Bill Cosby. Sof far as movies go: Back to the Future, starring Michael J.Fox of T. V.’s Family Ties, was the smash summer hit of 85 . Rocky IV and Rambo did much to bring Sylvester Stallone back Into the limelight as well as draw out attention to M.I.A.’s. Ron Howard directed an amusing movie entitled Cocoon. Chevy Chase and Dan Ackroyd laughed It up In Spies Like Us. Lastly, Pee Wee Herman took the big step Into motion pictures with his film Pee Wee’s Big Adventure: It was ten years ago this very night lcsttO Local News The majority of local news Involves changes in business situations. Much to the regret of 1 and Wendy’s — Burger King now Inhabits the area, soon to be followed by Taco Bell.; quest for Herb continues with $5,000 and a chance at $1,000,000 as a reward. The Capital now only a memory, as the building was purchased by a local church for its services and community uses. The Cfnema3 was a welcome addition to Shiawassee County, providing an Improvement and replacement for the Capital, as well as a better selection of movies. Nineteen Eighty-Five also saw the construction of a fairly large J.C. Penney’s. These additions required some rerouting of traffic patterns centering mainly on the abolishment of one-way streets, such as Park Street. Hutches left and Hamady’s moved to their old location — which was once Giant Way — leaving their old building vacant. It was soon filled by Price-Rite. The Sunset Inn was co-purchased by Jana Kurrle — who was once a teacher at C.H.S. — and christened D.J.'s Statlonhouse. The Exotic Jungle petshop moved and became The Birds of Paradise Exotic Jungle — two pet shops in one building. Also, The Owosso Playhouse fulfilled Paul Young’s threat and was torn down. Corunna High also saw many changes and additions. We experimented this year with an up with students” week, designed to highlight the various school clubs and organizations. The week ended with an assembly In which the teachers performed a skit which revealed their true personalities, Mrs. Hackett especially. We also experienced with a group of dedicated C.M.U. students, an unforgetable program appropriately called “P.R.I.D.E.” (Friends are Friends Forever) There was also a Christmas Play, performed by the advanced speech class, to start off Christmas break. Mr. Smith gracefully played Frosty and the Symphonic Band contributed musically. This was also the first year of completely computerized report cards. Last, but definitely not least, a special Thank you to Mr. Ash for making this yearbook possible; also congrat’s on your 50th Birthday this past January. Remember the Joy. the laughter, and the tears: The memories of us together Will last through the years. There Is nothing more I can say; Just wishing you will walk back my way. And give me one last glance And one more chance. To save the love we once had: The happy and the sad. Anonymous Kellie Kewlsh Art III 92 Cavalier Country 'Cavalier Country’ that’s what we say. It’s not just a school In more than one wayI It’s a place to come to see people who care. The hall’s are full: take a look, but don't stare. Our teams are deadly! Kevin Schooley Is big man. Keep up with our school. If you think you can! 'Cavalier Country’ that’s what we say. We are darn PROUD In more than one way!! Tammy Ash Valerie Vernon Art I 93 Heather Stelnke Art III David Fredrick Art III Did You Ever? Did you ever love someone and know they didn’t care? Did you ever feel like crying but knew you’d get nowhere? Did you ever look Into his eyes and say a little prayer? Did you ever look Into his heart and wish that you were there? Did you ever see him dancing with the lights turned down low? Did you ever whisper a prayer? God. I love him so. but never let him know. Don’t fall in love my friend, you’ll find It doesn’t pay. It always causes heartbreak. It happens everyday. And you don't know why you wonder day and night. Knowing you’re losing him no matter how you fight. Love Is fine but hurts so much. The price you pay Is high. If I could choose between love and death. think I’d rather die. So my friend don’t fall In love, you’ll hurt before it’s through. See my friend. I ought to know. I fell In love with you. Anonymous Patty McCollum Art III Thanks To My Best Friend I was alone and bewildered Before you came along. You directed me In a positive way And you helped me learn right from wrong. You taught me to like myself And you sorted out my mind. Even when I am upset or angry. You have always been kind. When my other friends turned their backs And looked down upon my ways. You comforted and admired me And had kind words to say. You’ve always been so loyal to me. You’re forever by my side. When other people deserted me. Our friendship you’ve never denied. The best friend a girl could have Is who you’ll always be. For you’ve always been terrific. You’ve loved and supported me. Thank you. friend, for everything. Your kindness and your care. I am ever grateful For the friendship that we share. Many players made valuable contributions to our season. Is the season opened, we had a lot of questions about what our season would be like. After the pre-season scrimmage most fans agreed that we would be lucky to win 2 games; however, after we beat Durand In the season opener 13-6 In overtime, our team became truly a team and played as a team throughout the season. We would like to thank the dedicated members for all of their help they contributed on the yearbook. Also. Mrs. Rearick’s typing class that helped so much on the typing needed to be done.
