afternoon, August 22nd, 1982, and the Marching Cavaliers prepare for the adventures into the unknown. The band once again went to Lake Louise for a week of hard work and fun. The band prepared routines to razzle-dazzle their crowds, make tears appear while playing love songs, and to show-off their fancy footwork to the famous hit Bandstand Boogie ' The band hosted a marching exhibition to allow the participating bands display their own abilities. Through thick-n-thin, the marching cavaliers were always prepared for Mother Nature. Neither rain, hail, sleet nor snow could stop the spirited marchers (not even Big Red). Spring is in the air for the Cavalier Band and the seniors get ready for their last stunning performance at the Holland Tulip Festival. The underclassmen strive even harder for perfection so that the seniors can experience the feeling of being Number 1 for the last time. Spirit is everywhere for the marching cavaliers and time is running out. The band banquet is a time for last good-byes, the hearing of the seniors' wills, the passing of the spirit jug, and the awarding for the outstanding accomplishments. Now the year of 1983 draws to an end and can be a memory shared by all. The marching season of 1982-83 can now be added to the other successful years for the Corunna Marching Cavaliers. The senior class of 83 wishes to thank Mr. Brooks and fellow bandsies for the many memories we have all been able to share together. Sincerely Michael P. This year's staff has been very dedicated to the task of putting together the yearbook. We have put in long hours after school, on Saturdays, and in study hall. The results of our hard work is the book you have before you. Without the staff, this book would never have been possible. Although budget cuts have forced us to make a smaller book, we feel this is one of the best yearbooks C.H.S. has ever had. Because of the extra advertising in the book, we were able to keep the Seniors' pictures in color, and we sold the book cheaper than it had been in years. We apologize for any mispelled names or errors in the book, but with a few people doing a lot of work, mistakes will happen. We hope you enjoy this yearbook, and we hope it brings back good memories of the school year 1982-83. Editors (I to r): Colleen Siegel, Mr. Buysse — Advisor, Chris Weathers. Sean McNeil of 105 FM, a well known disc jockey, emceed our homecoming dance. With the start of second semester, we purchased personalized welcome mats to enhance the entrances to our school. Of course mock Olympics is not the easiest job, but the most enjoyable. And among other things, the student council worked this year to establish the Poorman's Prom . Constantly, the council is working to accomplish these things that promote spirit amongst the student body, and pride in our community. Thank you for the opportunity and honor that I have enjoyed in representing the study body. Good luck to all the students, and to the continued progress of the future councils. The varsity football team had a winning season with a 5-4 record. Even though the Cavaliers had a poor start, the team, through hard work and dedication came on strong four of the last five games. The team had great community and student body support at the away games as well as at the home games. Congratulations to the four players who made 1st team all-conference and the two players who made 2nd team all-conference. A special congratulations to Phil Zielinski for making 1st team all- state running back. Good Job Guys!!! 76 J.V. We tied for 5th place in the Conference and 14th out of 20 in the regionals. Three of the run- ners made it to the state finals. Mark Hulliberger went to the state finals for the boys, and Lisa Adams and Natille Nesbit went for the girls. Mark Hulliberger was voted in as the MVP, Marty Gute was most improved, and Chris Bartos was voted in as Team Captain. We are looking forward to a better season next year. The varsity team also had the first perfect conference season in Corunna History, going 5-0. This record led to the first conference golf championship Corunna has ever seen. At Dewitt Invitationals this year three girls came home with 3rd place medals: Gretch- en Manke, Kirsten Anderson, and Peggy Weathers. Corunna placed second overall in Conference. Everyone on the team came home with second place medals except for Kris Kazen, who brought home a first. Mitzie Lykca was voted as Most Improved, and Kris Kazan was voted as MVP and Captain. Dee Weller deserves a lot of credit for she contributed a lot to- wards the outcome of the season, even though she was unfor- tunately injured in the middle of the season. Overall the team did very well and the Coach, Mr. Squires, deserves a lot of credit, and thanks, for bringing the team so far in a short 3 years. Girls Varsity Basketball First row (left to right) M. This year, 1982, the girls basketball team ended with a 7-11 season. Through the season we surpassed many difficulties and struggles, but managed to pull together and work as a team. Every year improve- ment is made and more attention is given towards girl athletics. For the most part, all the girls enjoyed playing, having fun ei- ther during practice or in a game. J.V. When the time came for girls swimming to begin it wasn't even known if there would be a team or who the coach would be. Swimmers were found, Dave Moore became coach again, and the team was formed. The girls didn't even hit the water until two and a half weeks before their first meet but they splashed to a 6-6 record. An excellent job for a team half composed of freshman. Tri-captains were the three seniors, Beth Welty, Karla Kitchen, and Char Bendall. Two varsity records were broken, 100 back- stroke and 200 medley relay. Karla Kitchen, Char Bendall, Jill Rathbun, Tami Hunt, and Beth Welty qualified for the class B state swim meet. 84 Hn v Pom-Pon Front Row (I to r): J. Hagadon — Co-captain, J. Mead — Captain. Tryouts began in October. More than 60 girls signed up!!! All hopefuls were taught a required routine. Each girl was also required to show the judges a personal routine, besides the required one, and do splits and jumps. Enthusiasm and attitude counted!!! Final tryouts were held at Miss Wilson's house and the job of picking the final squad was not an easy task!!! Shelly Arnold, Kris Thornell, Janice Toomey, Wendy Sohorec, Sherri Knauff, Tami McNeir, Lisa Taylor, Becky Kadlec, T. McKinzie, Jackie Mead, Kim Matthews, Janine Hagadon, Lynette Wilkins, Jackie Wilson, Robyn Eg- gert, and Lori Davis survived the final cut. The squad is not on the school sponsored extra-curricular list, so each girl had to buy her own pom-pons and uniform. Music, tapes and special players were all supplied by members and friends. Practices were required 3 to 5 times per week. Since getting the gym during the winter sports season is next to impossible, the squad used the hall near the office and tried to keep out of the way. (At least one early morning session was necessary so the group could use the gym before their final performance.) Practices were often brainstorming times when members would try different moves to the selected music. The squad soon learned that choreographing an entertaining routine is not an easy task. Getting 16 teenage girls to agree or respect peer ideas is a miracle job!!! Tempers sometimes flared and compromising caused some individual disappointments, but the squad was able to negotiate their differences, pull together, and perform entertaining routines which were well received by the crowd. No routine was presented until the squad was ready. The pain, frustration, and personal work was reflected in each routine, and the enthusiastic reception of the crowd made it all worth it. 85 Varsity Cheerleaders Left to right: Coach — Jan Gillum, Julie Corrin, Patti Price, Laura Gorman, Kirsten Manke, Jill Hargett, Leslie Nellis, Shawn Striggow. The Varsity Cheerleaders have had a lot of fun this year. During the summer, we attended camp and competed to win 1st place honors. In August, we competed at Nationals in Lansing. During the school year we also attended DCA, Silver Dome, Regionals, and State competitions. The first day of school brought a surprise for the football team as they found notes from their secret buddies on their lockers. Throughout the season we left sur- prises for them before each game. At the last game, we revealed ourselves to our secret bud- dies . During the week before homecoming, we sold carnations and set up the dress code for spirit week. We tried our best to bring enthusiasm to everyone and cheer the football and basketball teams to their victories. 86 J.V. Cheerleaders Front row (I to r): L. Corrin, R. Miller, S. Brooks. The Cavaliers started out the season winning the Flint Kearsley Tournament with two overtime victories over Flint Southwestern and host Flint Kearsley. They proceded to win the rest of their games before Christmas en route to an area best 5-0 pre-holiday record. A short slump followed as the Cav's lost their first two games after vacation to arch rival Durand and to league foe Ionia. They bounced back against Owosso, and started a six game winning streak. Unfortu- nately, that streak was ended by a red hot Owosso team on the Trojan's home court. They then bounced back against the Bulldogs' from Ionia to grab a share of the conference lead. A win over Kears- ley then preceded a crucial loss to O-E. The loss could have moved the Cav's out of the lead for first, but St. johns did Corunna a favor by knocking off Ionia. A victory over Alma will lead to District Action in Chesaning and on to a future State Championship. Corunna contin- ued to win the last 3 regular season games and then seven straight to win the class B State Championship. Behind the leadership of All State, Phil Zielinski, Mike Weber, Rich Moffit, Jim Herrick, John Fattal, and Coach Davis the Cardiac Cavaliers unranked all season won it all. J.V. There is usually two weeks of chaos before the mock wedding finale, with 56 students trying to get organized. There is scenery to paint, the flow- ers to arrange, vows to write, friends to motivate, musicians to contact, costumes to select, pro- grams to type, and lines to memorize. So why continue with the traditional mock wedding con- fusion? Well, it isn't the wedding day that is so important. As in real life, it is how people treat each other along the way that counts. It doesn't really matter who the brides and grooms are — but didn't they look fantastic all decked out — or even if the words came out the way intended — amazing how quiet otherwise boisterous voices can sound when they are nervous. The main idea behind the event is to see if one can operate under pressure in a way that shows consideration of others' feelings. Will you put aside personal conflicts and walk down the aisle with someone who isn't in your clique? Can you let somebody else make the final decision even if you think your idea is better? When the best man injures his leg, will you fill in for him? Will you do your share so others don't need to work overtime? Will you wear that rather small Aztec costume even if the temperature in room 141 is below 60°? Will you remember to bring the beads, safety pins, and curling iron you promised? Will you sew up the Jewish costumes, even if you're male? And when the wedding cake mysteriously falls off the table and gets ground into the carpet, who will clean it up? The ceremony is soon forgotten, but what was shared in the process stays with you a long, long time. Weddings M. Luft, S. Chapman, C. Bendall, M. Robinson, J. Runyan, M. Weber, S. Walton, J. Crowder. In the future I plan to study interna- tional relations, so later I can become a diplomat. My favorite hobbies are listening to classical music and reading political and historic books. What I like best here, is the warm hospitality of the teachers, students, and the American people. Betania Ferreira Vieira Dear all the students and the teachers at CHS, My name is Kayoko Oshima, but just call me Yoko . I'm from Niigata, population 400,000. It's located in the northern part of the country on the coast of the Sea of Japan. I'm a senior at CHS. I'm staying with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Kinney, Norma, Michael, and Bridget. Japanese lifestyle is not so different from Ameri- can. Japan has become very much Americanized . We have McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Calvin Klein jeans too. But school is really different. I attend a parochial school for only girls in Japan. 600 students. We have to wear uniforms to school daily. And in Japan, no students own cars or drive to school. We have to wait until 18 years old to get a license, and they are very expensive. $500 or more. The driver's tests are also very difficult. I've had many great experiences in this country as an exchange student. Especially in the Art classes. I really enjoyed drawing pictures. I know that art is an universal language. After my graduation at Japanese high school, I wish to attend college in this country. I will study art, along with possibly foreign languages, such as Eng- lish, German, French, and Spanish. We all played dodgeball and jumprope and king-of-the-mountain together. Now we face the somewhat frightening new horizon of adulthood together. But, being the striving young individuals and the strong, unified class that we are, just as we succeeded in dodgeball, jumprope, and king-of-the-mountain, there's no doubt we'll succeed in life together. Although there were hectic times as we tried to meet our deadlines, we always managed to have fun. I would like to thank the few dedicated members who cared enough to help with the book. Above all, I wish to thank Mr. Buysse for all the time and effort he put into the book. Without this great advisor, the book would never have been finished. I hope this yearbook has successfully preserved the memories of this school year, and I hope it will bring back many memories in the years to come. Good luck to next year's editors. It's quite a job. Sincerely, Senior Co-Editor 1982-83 This year, as yearbook editor, was a lot of fun. Of course, there were times that were trying, as deadlines became harder and harder to meet. But, the fun times outweighed the trying times. I hope you all enjoy this yearbook as much as I've en- joyed helping put it together. I would like to thank all the dedicated yearbookers for all of their help putting this book together. Without them, this book would have never been done. Most of all, I would like to thank Mr. Buysse! Without all of his time, help, and effort this book wouldn't be possible. Good Luck to next year's editors and staff! I hope you have as much fun as I did. Sincerely, Chris Weathers Senior Co-Editor 1982-83 176
