This year we started a lot of things and got to know more. The year be- gan September 3.1980, school began to be as usual by November and summer vacation began June 10, 1981. Ready, set and go. 4 Beginning to run and rescue with giving blood. We started new classes, opened more books, began school at 3:00, had a second lunch line for the first time, began a good season for the wrestlers, had excellent starts from startblocks and began to study when we had to. 5 Time To Work Work is an essential part of school and everybody does it-once in a while. Work for exams, work for tests and work for high scores. There is no way to be without it. yet it is awful hard to be with it. Results of work are sweat and even flunked tests, but re- member: it has to be. Talk, train or type-people worked hard and succeeded b Play also is an essential part of school even if you can’t believe it sometimes. Play notes, play in class and play after school. We always find time for playing even if teachers don’t always agree with this way of enjoying life. Playing causes laughter and makes school acceptable. Time To Play 7 Homecoming The court Kimberly and Mr. and Mrs. Kent Kirby Queen Marlene. Mrs. Marvel Conley and Jim Theresa and Mr. and Mrs. James Davis Edie Eldridge and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Eldridge M.B. crowns M.C. This year we had three exchange students from Europe and one from San Salvador. They were intro- duced during halftime and were in the parade. Helena Karppinen from Finland, Andrea Keller from West Germany (above). Soren Nielsen from Denmark and Julio Medrano from San Sal- vador (left) who plans on graduating here in two years. Not only the football game on Friday was a part of Homecoming but the whole week before that we showed our spirit. No mat- ter what we did, dress up, dress crazy or in black and gold, we had a lot of fun every day. And so did the teachers. We also voted for the Homecoming Queen and her court and she was honored on Friday night during halftime by the classes. Melissa Tobey and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Tobey 9 Winning Float Seniors Can” O.-E.l Sophomores Skunk ’em' Homecoming meant floats as well as football, and this year the Seniors won the float competition. Like all the years before, each class had its float and put it together during the week before Homecoming. 10 11 Time To Win Of course we won this year-at least a lot of times. There always was the spirit and the confidence in our teams, and there were a lot of times to be happy about a victory. Even a close one by two points is still a win and will always be. Congratulations, everyone, we did a good job of win- ning this year. Expressions of winning in a face and the will to beat others. 12 Time To Lose A ball can be lost as well as a race. Of course we also lost this year-a few times. Sometimes it helped us to win the next time and sometimes we were just discouraged. There were times to lose but if there weren’t we would be perfect, and ’’nobody is perfect is still true. So, why worry about it, you often learn from losing. 13 fime High school is one of the best times together. The Freshmen experienced that for the first time and our Seniors had a great time being together in their last year. No matter where and when-we nev- er run out of time to be together. To Be Together 14 Time To Be Alone High school can also have a few times and rea- sons for being alone. The bitterness after defeat, quietness in empty hallways and even being in a group can leave you on your own, either of your own choice or of others. 15 Overtime Overtime isn't very popular but there sure is enough of it at school. Not only Saturday detention is considered overtime work but so are teachers in the lounge after 2:30, early morning swim practice, studying at home until midnight, team practice after school, writing 200 words for Mr. Clark, run- ning extra laps in gym class for gum chew- ing and having to play five more minutes of basketball. There are lots, lots more-sometimes hated, but mostly accepted-and overtime still is one of our (good?) times at school. People often even liked their overtime when they had fun. 16 Mike Anders Alisa Anderson Carol Atkinson Sara Abbott Lisa Ade Dusty Adkins Stephan Austin Mark Bacigal Karl Baker 18 Mary Beach Randy Beckwith Shelley Belmer 19 Wendy Bradford Randall Browning Sandra Bucsi Scott Burns Kathleen Cach Brian Campeau Robert Carsten Kevin Cerny Charles Church 20 Thomas Cook Tracy Cramner Joe Crego Pam Crowe Roy Dahl Laura Darling Ann Collier Mark Compton Marlene Conley ft 21 Robin Dassance Theresa Davis Karol Dean 22 2 i 24 Daniel Gooding Lorie Gorringe Mike Gowan Cathy Graves Shannon Gray Rob Grumley Chris Guysky Gerri Hagadon Russell Hall 25 Daniel Hanifan Joni Hastings Tami Hauk Jeff Hildebrant Kim Hildebrant Donald Hilliker Kurt Honke Jami Hornus Debbie James Lisa Hitchcock Josephine Hiavna Debbie Hodge Renee Jancarik Christa Janego Philip Jaworsky Laurie Jenkins Susan Johnson Teresa Jones Helena Karppinen Andrea Keller Steve Kildea Kevin Kingsbury Kimberly Kirby Connie Kirkman 28 30 Mary Mahoney Brenda Male Jean Mallery Katherine McGarvey Sherry McIntyre Todd Mehigh 31 Paul Nickels Sren Nielsen Scott Norden Michelle Norman Heidi Numerich Greg O'Dell Thomas Oginsky Laura Ordway Wynell Otto 33 Andrea Parker Linda Peterson Sue Petersen Randie Plowman Sharon Pratt Scott Rathbun 34 35 Tina Savage Scott Schooley David Seely Shawn Sexton Jeff Shire Phillip Sneed J6 Joan Sovis Joseph Spaniola Sally Spring Michelle Springs Terry Stanton Carol Steele Rene Stehlik Martha Stewart Erich Stroub Anita Sturzer Grady Suggs Joseh Szakal 37 39 Jean Witt John Wood Kimberly Wright Lori Yott Jeff Zdunic Chris Zimmerman George Welden Timothy Hess Not Pictured: David Bridges Laurie Colon Mark Colon Teresa Dean Dave Elston Joe Highdale Gary Justice Robert Knowlton Dale Moiles Robert Rollings Brett Warner 40 What a year! Graduation finally came and then it was-bye, Seniors! They could hardly wait to get out of Corunna and explore the world out there (or maybe they already did before?). 1981 hopefully was one of their better years of high school, with the Government day, junior-senior banquet, prom, senior trip and much more. There is more to come, so have a great life. Seniorsll 41 Who. me?? Sorry, folks! Killer statements. 42 FACULTY Aa Cc. Mrs. Eidridge, who was the high school secretary for 17 years, made an indelible impres- sion on all the students and staff with whom she came in contact. She handled the problems with which she was con- fronted with professional poise and patience. Invariably help- ful and understanding, her cheerful attitude positively af- fected everyone in the school. In her way, she fulfilled the highest ideals of education. 56 Barb Augustus Steve Bacigal Barb Bacon Doug Badgero Jeff Baker Ann Beach Cindy Beach Lee Bennett Kim Berthume Randy Black Beth Brown Jenny Brown Belinda Buckley Tim Butcher Shirley Carlin Mary Carpenter Todd Carsten Jeff Caverson John Chandler Lisa Chant 58 Kelly Cherny Mike Cherny Phil Church Larry Cilk Renee Cleveland Kelley Cole Richele Conrad Jerry Coon Vikki Corbin Gary Cramner Delos Cripps Shannon Cummings Ed Curth Rob Curtis Irene Czypera Janice Daniels Joe Daniels Bob Davis Connie Davis Mark Delaney Shirley Delaney Susan Dillon Don Douglas Tammy Dumond Terry Dumond Kris Elkins Bill Ellis Dana Everest Tonya Everett 59 Sharon Farver Brad Fawcett Kent Findlay Jeff Flag Debbie Flowers Gary Fouts Steve Fredrick Lynn Freel Angie Freund Kevin Friday Richard Fyke Mike Galesk Ann Gallant Denise Gasek Jamie Gates Sheila Gewirtz Steve Gewirtz Phil Gitchell Karen Goad Vince Gonyou Tim Gorman Elizabeth Goward Dan Green Rich Griggs Rita Guyski 60 Lee Hebekeuser Beth Hertz Rocky Hickam Joe Hickman Jeff Hickmott John Highdale Jeff Hittle Tim Hodge Dave Holler Ted Holzhausen Eric Isaacson Gregg Janicek Tammy Jaye Eric Jensen Scott Johnson Gregg Jones Russ Jones Greg Jordan Mark Judd Jim Kildea Maxine King Lisa Kirk Mark Kirkman Karen Kitchen Jeff Kominek 61 Paula Koterba Ed Labadie Shelby Lawcoek Barb Lawson Virginia Lazar Kevin Leavitt Cathy Lenker Pat Lennox Chris Lepior Shelly Letavis Priscilla Letts Dave Lorencz Randy Losey Jane Lueker Dawn Lulham Teri Lynes Greg Maffin Pam Male Julie Mallery Bob Marks Pam Mars Michelle McComb John McCoy Rick McPherson David Mead Kevin Mehigh Rick Mehigh Trena Mehigh Teri Michels 62 John Ncifer Angie Nichols Jeff Miller Kelly Moon Claudia Moore Mark Moore Tredd Morris Steve Mosingo Jim Mowl Bobbie Mulholland Phil Mumby Debbie Murphy Jane Nacovsky Ron Nalley Don Nichels Robert Nutt Vicki Ockerman Joyce Oginsky Jim Olmstead John Osika Dawn Palmer Lisa Palasio Dennis Pajtas Marvin Parker Phil Patterson Terri Pilmore Bob Quirk Carl Radon Jim Reasner 63 Tim Reid Mike Renwick Kathy Rock Mike Rundell Robert Sands Jeff Sawyer Rick Schneider Janeene Scott Debbie Sheppard Scott Shipman Dayna Simpson Anne Marie Skodak David Smith Rick Smith Joyce Springs John Stehlik Steve Street Randy Stroup Brian Suggs Monica Swales Penny Swan Tina Swan Melodi Tejkl Missy Thompsen Craig Thornton 64 Jay Toddy Jane Tomcala Cheryl Trimble Laurie Walters Philip Weathers Sue Weber Elaine Weidman Daphne Weller Del Weller Dana Waston Lorie White Leon Whitney Jeff Wieland Glenn Wiggins Sherri Winer Kelli Wing Karen Wisniewski Jeff Wolf Jeff Wright Theresa Yanik Billi Yerian Shelly Zdunic Julie Zielinski Mary Zwolensky NOT Kim Crain Pamela Harley Roy Holbrook Kim Hunter John Knowlton Jody Mamerow Carl Nichols SHOWN: Johanna Nochols Robert Reynolds Angela Smith Mike Smyth Clint Snell Joe Spring Delbert Wall Keith Wooten 65 66 «f . What you are holding in your hands right now. these 192 pages full of pre- served memories, were done by the people you can see on this page. With- out them, and without all the effort, hours and hard work that they put in after school, there would be nothing- no funny faces to laugh about, no- body’s signature in the cover, nothing at all. This is one of our best yearbooks we ever had-one of the nicest ones that 5, sometimes 6. people put togeth- er. They are proud of it and I think, so should you. Maybe there are some things missing or some names mis- spelled. We are sorry about that, but if you would have been there, maybe this book could have been even better. Kotowicz-Finance Manager 87 This year the Corunna band had one of its most successful years ever. In order to prepare for the busy marching year, the marching band traveled to Lake Louise, near Boyne City, in August. During this very strenuous week of marching and playing, more marching and more playing, we learned all of our routines for the upcoming football season. Besides football games, the band participated in Band Day ’ at Central Michigan University, and received a standing ovation from the crowd. During the winter months, the Symphonic band practiced extra hard in order to put on a great concert at the Michigan Schools Superintendent Conference. The Senior and Symphonic bands both received ’Ts’ at band festival, while the pep band performed at basketball games. To end a fabulous year, the Marching Cavaliers invaded the city of Holland, and received straight Ts ' while out marching all of their competitors. Overall, it was a very good year that will not be forgotten by band members and its spectators. Jeff Nellis. Band President 88 89 Choir Back row (l-r)= H. Freel, R. Austin. L. Tipton. J. Adams, D. We have established assemblies for next year, worked on changes for Homecom- ing. I have enjoyed being President for a year, but it is not the easiest job. After struggling for weeks trying to learn our lines, we finally accomplished this feat by the eve of opening night. Arsenic and Old Lace is about 2 old ladies who take pity old lonely men with no fam- ilies. In this manner, they put them out of their misery by offering them Elderberry Wine with poison. Little do they know that the wine is poisoned . . Their nephew, who thinks that he is Teddy Roosevelt, buries the bodies in the cellar thinking they are Yellow Fever Victims. All in all, The play was a big success and a lot of fun. Thank-you Director. Ms. Maddocks Alan Durham (Teddy Roosevelt) Soren Nielson lives in Kolding. Denmark, which has a population of 150,000. The city is on the ocean. Its largest industry is a boat and yacht-building company. His father heads the Computer Pay Service for Den- tists, Copenhagen, which serves all dentists in the country. His mother is taking a medical course. He has one brother, 14, who is a junior at school. I like the Corunna school system, even though it is Andrea Keller was the first exchange student from West Germany ever to come to Corunna High School. She lives in Hamburg, the biggest city in Germany, located in the very north of her country. Andrea was born in West Africa where her parents lived for ten years. Her father. Hans, is manager of an import and export company and mostly travels a lot abroad. Her mother. Ingrid, is a skilled secretary but now stays home where she is involved in tupperware and other activities. Andrea also has one sister. Anja. who is 18 years old. Her favorite food while in the U.S. is tacos even though it is not American while she doesn’t like peanut butter and squash. I had a really great time here in Corunna. Michigan, and that includes bad experiences as well. There were some bad times but they gave me just as much as the good ones. I would like to thank everyone for being so friendly to be at the beginning and staying that way all the year through. I just wish I could stay longer because I really found friends for life here. Special thanks go to my family here. Mr. and Mrs. Alan S. Welty. Kurt. Kris. Beth and Kyle from Corunna. I’ll never forget any of you. Good luck to everyone and I hope I can see you' all again some time in the near future.” I know that I can’t mention all the people who were important to me this year but I would like to say that the few persons on the yearbook staff in Corunna mean a lot to me and will always be remembered by me as special friends. I am so glad I worked on it. It made me realize again how much I would like to be journalist after school. Per- sonalities enter into the schools.” While in the states, Soren lived with the Don Hart and the Everett Hickam family in Corunna. He finished this year in Virginia with relatives. Helena Kristina Karppinen was an Echange Student here from llomantsi, Finland, and was staying with the Dave Steele Family in Vernon. Helena says the school system in Finland is very similar to that in Corunna. but- it is so busy here-so many more things going on. Finnish schools do not sponsor sports like those here, but High School is much harder in her Homeland. Students are not required to go to High School, but must complete High School if they wish to enter College, which requires a very extensive and difficult examination. Most col- lege courses require five to six years and are very difficult. During Helena's stay here in the States, her parents, who operate a clothing factory, have moved and she doesn't really know where she’ll live when she returns on July 13. Helena's home is in the central part of Fin- land- very close to the Russian border-we can see the border”. There is much farmland where she lives, but the southern part of Finland is heavily industrialized. I would like to thank all of my American friends and family for giving me so much.” Thank-youlllll Helena Karppinen (MIKA LUTKA) Class Sitting (l-r): Mr. Harvey, Ms. Maddocks, Mrs. Kurrle. As everyone sat sweating under their gowns Mrs. Schultz, our guest speaker described the advantages of living in America, compared to Nazi and Russian ran governments. The class of ’81 has been a special one, reaching new goals and setting a precedent by our spirit. Our salutarian Edie Eldridge brought to mind a few childhood memories and our co-valedictorians Lisa Ade and Joe Spaniola stressed the importance of striving for goals that are impor- tant to yourself. Tom Oginsky, President of the class described the advancements that can be made if we set high standards for our- selves.
