Corunna High School Corunna Michigan 1QB0 5Pininir Why sphinx? This age-old question was answered In the first yearbook published of Corunno High, the 1912 Sphinx. In spite of the wonders of our age, some enigmas ore yet unsolved. Each doy unravels more and more hidden truths. Inasmuch as enigmaficol power is supposed to lie in the old Egytian Sphinx, which towers up as an everlasting symbol of learning and wisdom, we hove chosen that name os o title for this, our first publication, leaving the riddles we propound for the wisdom of the future to explain. We do not expect that our small fund of learning can, in the least, compare with the brood knowledge of the Sphinx, but through these pages we merely express the hope that our wisdom may increase with the years, till we reach the highest standard of this world's intellect and the desire that our own meager Sphinx may appeal to us as one of the pleasant memories of our Class of 1912.'' ✓- ' 5PRCE •' ond this one come In when I wos six. Under the direction of sponsor Miss Moddocks. this new spirit group organized, and became a highlight- ed favorite of the fans. The twelve girl squad consisting of juniors and seniors entertained the crowds with original routines. Not discouraged by hard work, the girls made their own uniforms and created every step of their many routines. It was a true group effort by the squad to make the Corunna Pom Pon girl's first year a very successful one. 39 FIRST ROW (L-R): T. Conrod. K. Lenker. R. Dossonce. C. Nourse. T. Dumond. M. Honke. D. This is the first full year Corunna High yearbook ever. The staff worked hard (or is that hardly worked) on the 192 pages to meet the various deadlines. The book has more color this year than ever before also, which should make the book that much more enjoyable. From the whole yearbook staff, we hope that you enjoy this book, and may it keep many enjoy- able memories of C.H.S. right at your finger tips. There, we spent 6 days in the hot sun. outran most bees, and tried to avoid wild-running chipmunks in our cabins. Despite all of that, we did manage to learn 2 half-time routines. During the course of the week, we were left with a note that was put on one of the cabin’s front porch. The next morning we found it and it read: Every morning you wake us up with the MSU Fight Song. We're sick of it and we demand that you play at least a better fight song — U of M fight song would be much better. Play it or else!!” we were a little bit frightened at first, but we found opt that it was just a hoax by someone who obviously doesn’t like MSU. They didn't realize it was also Corunna's fight song. We returned home the following Saturday with sore mus- cles and plenty of dirty clothes. School started the following week. Our first home game was that Friday. We performed our tribute to Mr. Dennis, and made our debut in our new uniforms. The band was allowed to make a float for homecoming. We were not in competition, but we were recognized as part of the student body. The marching season went on and we closed with our annual Marching Dand Concert where we did every routine from our previous shows. Everyone was excited about coming inside for Symphonic Dand. For the first time our band was invited to play at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor. The 82 member band presented a 50-minute concert with 6 selections chosen by Mr. Drooks. The performance was done with excellence by the band members. We were honored to be selected as one of three high school instrumental groups. The bands (Both marching and concert) have received ratings of ones all four years of the Senior's high school career. We are hoping to finish that nul rating by on excel- lent performance at the annual Holland Tulip Festival. 63 Sandy Butcher. Band President A typicol doy in bond. Myl Those drummers ARE oil in step. For the first time in Corunna's history, the Corunna High Symphonic Band was awarded the privilege of performing in Hill Auditorium at the Mid-West Directors Conference at the University of Michigan on January 19th, 1980. Is if really all that bad? If you asked a Senior where he'd like to be, chances are he'd say, Anywhere but Corunna! (with a heavy accent on the run) But why? What's wrong with our little town? Sure, we don't have a theater or a place to go dancing, and there's nothing to do on a Friday or Saturday night, 'cept maybe sit around and wait for the courthouse clock to ring or try to scare yourself senseless by walking through the Pine Tree Cemefary after dark. But think. Think about what we do have. Corunna is a comfortable community where everyone knows everyone else (you can't get away with anything without your parenrs knowing). We hove clean streets, nice homes, close friends, and a secure environment. You can walk down the street without worrying about what might be waiting for you around the corner. I've been a lot of places and seen a lot of things — most of it good, some of it bad. Yet I still feel a certain love for rhe little town I live in. And, no matter where I go, in years to come, or what I do. I'll always come back to Corunna. Karla Damm, R.R.F. The Shtawossee County Court House. Corunna. State Street. Corunna. During these years, we have made many friendships which have helped us to become more unified. This unity has helped us to achieve many of the goals that we had set before us as Freshman. Through our projects, sports, and other activities, we have gained an education which will be as important to us as the education we have received in the classroom. We will long be remembered as a class that was unafraid, we refused to let If get us down, and were always ready to try again. On June 1 st, we became the first class to go all four years In the new high school. We were the first sophomore class to have a donkey-basketball game, which was a great success, aod still is today. We hold the school record for magazine soles. We have also shown our spirit by either winning or trying for the over all spirit point- championship for 3 yeors in a row (10. 11, 12). This ar we also brought bock the Senior Ploy with Har- ve . Also, this year the Seniors lead the Varsity Bas- ketball feam to its first outright championship in 20 yeors. Dowd and his bet friend: an invisible, six and a half foot, white pooka (or rabbit) named Harvey. Elwood's sister, Veto Louise Simmons, attempts to have Elwood committed to the local sanitarium. Instead, Dr. Chumley and Dr. Sander- son believe Mrs. Simmons is the crazy one and commit her in place of Elwood. The play was a big success, which can only be attributed to those who worked so diligently for better than a month: The cast, the directors, the prop commit- tee, and the senior class sponsors. We would also like to thank the audiences, who were so attentive and responsive both nights. Thank-you, Robin Lewis (Veto Simmons) 100 Now Harvey, why don't you toke o seot right here? The Greek Orthodox wedding reflected o lot of research ond wos complete with music ond crowns. The Jewish wedding took place under o flower laden canopy ond wos portiolly spoken in Hebrew. Two of fhe ceremonies were written by fhe bridol parties themselves ond represented fhe personalized note which many couples fovor today. The more fomilior Catholic ceremony was altered o little by modern music and a double bridol party. There wos also a traditional Protestant wedding. The minister scheduled to perform this ceremony went on voca- tion ond forgot to show up. but a teacher was found for o lost minute substitute and the nuptials went as planned. Speech students added to fhe program by speaking on various topics related to marriage. The weddings seemed more realistic with the use of music, flowers, long dresses, tuxedos, ond omple food ond coke - not to mention the tossing of bouquets and garters. Much of the fun ond excite- ment wos captured in the photography session which preceded fhe recep- tion. Korlo Domm Lynn Warner A Time For Love There's o time for love for everyone in their life. Though it be friendly love, puppy love, or true love. There is love in the time of fear. If mokes you feel secure knowing it's there. The time of true mutual love is for those who know, that it's not just puppy love, but o lifetime of love. Love is needed in a time of feeling down. It restores yourself to know there's something more powerful to overcome your letdown. The time for coring love is while you're growing up. Your surrounding love from loved ones. Love comes in oil seasons and all through life itself. So when love is there, take time to love it bock. Pom Morgan Time is the yesterday we spent together, hand in hand, under the starry sky. Time is the tomorrow We are looking for next. Laura Neifer Lynn Warner Loura Fours Time Time is a time of day in seconds. Time is a time of day in minutes. Time is a time of day in half-hours. Time is a time of day in hours. Time is just another thing to worry about. Time is a part of the day and of your life. Time is always around you and your life. Time is the time of the day in the sun. Time is the day of having fun with a girl. Time is the summer day all alone. Time is the time you enjoy in the water. Time is the day to help you tell time. Time is the time when you go to bed. Jay Darling A starry eye shines in the night watching ... wondering ... waiting . . . for what will become of tomorrow. Lori Burgess 159 Lynn Wornei Terri Mehigh Lord Ryan the Irish The clear-cut features of his Irish face scowled, the distinct lips, the russet hair. His square-cut shoulders, eyes crystal blue and deep set and that unrelenting stare. He was an Irishman, through and through, strong and proud, speaking against the English king the arrogant bigot to whom all Ireland bowed. He was fall and thin, prideful in cloak and boots from the County Tyrone. And he talked with Irish tact as if he'd kissed the Blarney Stone. Th' name's Lord Ryan, 'n I do be here To abolish fh' myth that th' English hold dear. Ire'lin's not a land a' Leprochans, er dreamers a clover and light. We're proudmen, not slaves and we'll fight fer our laws and what's right. The king he sneered and shook his belly yet his mouth began to drool. Lord, he said, you're a proud man and I shant take you for a fool . Lord Ryan's mouth was straight and set. he simply said, Go on ... I came here to' warn ya, yer majesty, and I'll be leavin' again at dawn. For what, fool sir? the king replied, Some Irish dreams and a pack of lies? Don't bellow thou king for I shant stay long, but I'll be on me horse and fightin' at dawn. He lowered his head, turned on his heal, the stride of a general, guts made of steel. Over the drawbridge, mounting his horse, with calmness and honor he continued his course. Bring me my armour, my horse and my lance. We'll kill those fool Irish without a trifling glance!” On thourougbred, with banners, the procession did ride, the king at the head, a sword at his side: For Ryan, he whispered, under his breath, He'll beg for my mercy and I'll laugh at his death. A lull. I've finally reached A lull. As I dig for an inspiration I sink deeper into a hole of stagnant dreams: seeing, feeling, touching nothing. My ideas and thoughts are going nowhere. R.R.F. On a field out of Yorkshire in the first lights of dawn The battle was ending and the king's sword was drawn. Lord Ryan stood helpless, but his spirit remained as the wind briskly blew, thru the tossed russet mane. The king struck his lance out but Ryan was quick, he grabbed the king's wrist and he fell like a brick. They stabbed and they tumbled, 'midst the horses and guns. The king fought for his money, the lord . for his sons. The king was older, but Lord Ryan was strong. The king thought he'd win ... but the king, he was wrongl The fog slowly lifted and fury of dust Ryan mounted and said, We did what we must. After minutes of riding, the horses drew reign. Lord Ryan knelt down, the wind blew through his mane. The others they followed, 'twas the inspiring sight, they had fought with their guts, now they prayed with their might. To Saint Patrick and Mary and rightly to God, Lord Ryan was their shepherd, his sword was his rod. ”We are th' Irish, yer people he cried, Fer you we have fought, for you we have died. We are Roman Catholics, and you are our Lord, It's only fer you that we raiseth the sword. They rode back to Ireland, steadfast and brave, but they'd be no man's slave. Mary K.
