Freshmen ‘LOVE THOSE CAVALIERS” Sophomores “STOMP ’EM THE WINNING FLOAT Juniors “CAVALIERS WILL TASTE SWEET VICTORY” HOMECOMING 1978 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20 ami Homecoming Week came to an end with a CHS victo- ry over Swan Valley. The Vikings gave it a good try, but we showed them our strength within the last minute of the game. The enormous crowd also saw the halftime festivities. Queen Kathy Oginsky and her court, Cindy Allen, Angie Spaniola, Shawn Stehlik, and Jill Striggow were escorted onto the field by their fathers. Queen Kathy was crowned by Steve Cummings as the band played “You Light Up My Life.” Also during halftime, the Exchange Students were introduced. They are Janna Routsalainen from Finland, Harm (Jack) Scherpbier from Holland, Sumito Nezo and Shoko Saito from Japan, and Maria Acosta from Mexico. After the game, the day was ended with a Victory Dance featuring a disc jockey from WHNN. The whole week of Homecoming was a very exciting one. The Juniors showed the most spirit by winning both the skit competition and the float contest. 15 Let’s get this straight you dummies! The graduating class of 1979 is as unique as an individual. The times we were discouraged were only temporary. We had the ability to stand up and get ready for events to come. There was great joy participating in class projects. These projects gave us something small to aim for and acheive together. They created shared moments to remember. The four years we have experienced at Corunna High School have contained ambition, defeat, hard work, and success. The elected officials with myself, the mayor, held a city council meeting. We discussed and voted on all of the material sug- gested in the agenda. After the agenda had been covered, the council moved on to look over the rest of the city’s operations, the court house, fire station, etc. Later that same day, we took part in the real city council meeting. With the actual council members there, we had a chance to ask questions of them. They answered our questions very patiently, taking the time to make sure we understood them. I, personally, would like to thank everyone for their excel- lent cooperation in making this a learning experience for ev- eryone involved. 1 would also like to extend special thanks to our fantastic government teacher, Mrs. Kurrle, who made everything possible. The camp was held at Lake Louise, up north, and we worked on two show routines and marching drills for one week. We returned to do all of the home football game halftime shows. The band attended Chesaning Parade of Bands in September, and then we were invited to Michigan University Bandarama at Ann Ar- bor. We performed an excellent show and won 1st in our B, C, D division of the high stepping bands. It was the first time the Corunna Band has performed in competition outside of Holland. We traveled in class down to Ann Arbor in our new band spirit bus. In November we concluded our fall marching season with our yearly marching band concert in front of many spectators. I know, myself, that many students were scared and were positive that they would be lost every minute, but now they have found their ways around and the school is wonderful to them. The Freshman class has done many activities and has cooperated very well with the school rules. John Gacy, of Des Plains, Illinois, was accused of killing 32 boys and young men, then burying them in crawl spaces under his home. 1978 saw the deaths of many famous people: Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul I, Hubert Humphrey, Golda Meir, Will Geer, Norman Rockwell, and Edgar Bergen. Also the most famous birth in centuries, the first Test Tube Baby. In the Star Scene — thousands of teenie-boppers mourned as Donny Osmond took a bride. Steve Martin, that “Wild and Crazy Guy,” rose to the top of the comedy ladder while John Baluchi lead college students everywhere back to a simpler time of toga parties and eating goldfish with his movie “Animal House.” John Travolta and the Bee Gees brought about the biggest craze of the year, the disco, with their movie, “Saturday Night Fever,” and the Oscar winning movie, “Annie Hall,” changed the course of ladies' fashions by borrow- ing men’s clothing. On the state level, the legal drinking age went from 18 to 21 on December 23rd. As of December 3rd, all bever- age cans and bottles had to be returned for deposit.
