SPHINX ’70 Corunna High School Corunna, Michigan Foreword I would like to thank all of the members of my staff for the many hours they have devoted to making this annual a success. A special thanks goes to Mr. Ash for all of his guidance, help, and confidence. Also, thank you to the advertisers for their generous contribution to our yearbook. Ross In appreciation of her many years of service and devotion to the students of Corunna High School. 3 Senior Pictures What a swinger! We listened . . . It’s Been A Mock Session of the U. S. Senate ENGLISH IV CLASSES Present TURKEY TALES Board Of Education ROW 1: A. Butcher, K. Hayes, J. Deppong, R. Chapin. ROW 2: W. Hanchett, R. Volek, B. Conklin. In my judgment your class exemplifies that segment of today's youth which is not only concerned with today’s problems but is committed to seeking meaningful alternatives to solution within our democratic process. As you strive to avoid the polarizing influence of the status quo, 1 feel obligated to call your attention to the necessity for order and disci- pline in your approach. Free and unintimidated dialog cannot be main- tained without rules and respect. Such discourse, as you well know, is the foundation of our national dream of equality, freedom and the pursuit of a full life as each of us view it. If your school environment and its staff have helped you to appreciate the greatness inherent in our democracy as well as some of our weak- nesses in administering its accepted edicts, one of our most important objectives has been reached. Within this framework we would like to believe that your high school education has not been an isolated experience. On behalf of your Board of Education and school staff, I would offer you our continued assistance and association in the years ahead. Sincerely, R. E, Dennis Superintendent 6 During the past four years of your formal education every effort has been made to provide you with the necessary skills and attitudes to prepare you for a successful future in today’s busy society. Now it is up to you. Use the experiences and training which you have re- ceived wisely and with great determination to be a successful citizen. Above all else, be a good citizen, love your country, and make your place in society one which you will be proud to occupy. Richard J. Clark Assistant Superintendent I wish to offer my sincere congratulations and hope for much success to each of you in the future. You are to be commended for the successful completion of your high school education in this time of social changes. Never before has your generation played such a vital importance in the moods, attitudes, and goals that will portray our great country in the future. I only hope that Corunna High School in some way has helped prepare you for these challenges. Keep in mind that for every right you have, you also have many more responsibilities. Again, Best of Luck. Duane L. Ash Principal Graduating seniors, recognize your own importance. It will help make your life worthwhile. Have a good purpose in life. If you use the imagination and initiative entrusted to you, you won't have time to be bored. Do more than earn a living. This country needs people with a real system of values, who are committed in their thinking, have roots, have loyalties, and resist in some symbolic way the nega- tives of life which attack all of us. Not the opportunist who is looking for the easy way, the person who doesn’t believe in the value of work as something in itself, who doesn’t believe in service unless there is something in it for him. Develop your character. Few people realize how much they hurt themselves by failing to develop their moral and spiritual traits. God does not give character. It is the sum total of man's moral choices. 7 Nick Annese, Asst. Principal GARY L. BALMA M.M.Ed. Central Mich. U. Choir JANET R. BLACKFORD B. S. Mich. State U. Home Economics MRS. ELDRIDGE JAMES W. But when I go back to Germany next summer I will be in the 11th grade because I will not get credit for this year. Since we have a 13th grade, this means 3 more years of high school. Although I lost” one year I am glad I could come here, because 1 met a lot of nice people and learned many things - not only about your country but about my own as well. I would like to thank the faculty and the student body for being so nice and friendly during the last months. Special thanks to those teachers who helped me so often this year. Sabine Glahr Germany It is good to live in the small city of Corunna because the people are friendly and you soon get to know the people well. Another thing which I like about Corunna is that it looks like a typical town of the United States. I have many friends both in and out of school in Corunna, and I am very happy to be part of this community. This is my second year here, and 1 feel it is my home. Even if I eventually return to Panama, I shall never forget this town and its people. Max Donoso C. Panama Even though everybody keeps running Corunna down, I am very glad that I came to live here, and 1 don’t think anybody needs to apologize for living here. Of course, the .school is little, but for this reason the students are close-knit and very well acquainted with each other, larger schools - that an exchange student needs to help him not to feel lost. The administration, teachers, and students are so kind to me and are always ready to help me with any problem I might have. Everybody is so interested to hear about the Netherlands that I simply feel flattered, and I learn a lot about the American way of living, so that I really feel my stay in Corunna is useful. We hope it reflects on the kind of activities and meaning you can get from being an FHA’er. New members were initiated in Sept, with both an informal and formal ceremony. October started out by going to MSU for the fall Regional meeting where Joan Van Wagoner served her final time as Regional Parliamentarian, and Ellen Stewart was elected for Regional Secretary 1969-70. Two drug programs, Christmas caroling with the FFA and a Christmas basket for a needy family were activities for the rest of 1969. Individual recognition has gone to some of the girls this year due to their work on degrees. They have done such things as sew swim suits for the girls Physical Education classes, encourage school spirit with a pep club, sew “ditty bags” for children in Viet Nam, plus many other things. 74 Future Nurses Club ROW 1: C.
