WELCOME TO THE HOME OF THE C)0 'unna 7 icj i ScAoof Gorunna, JlTic n an i 7 0 re wo ref The Annual Staff thanks each person, faculty member, and advertiser for his support. Deadlines cannot be met without co-operation. WHY IS OUR ANNUAL NAMED SPHINX?” Here’s the answer as quoted from the first Corunna annual issued in 1912. “In spite of the wonders of our age, some enigmas are yet unsolved. Each day unravels more and more hidden truths. Inasmuch as enigmatical power is supposed to lie in the old Egyptian Sphinx, which towers up as an everlasting symbol of learning and wisdom, we have chosen that name as a title for this, our first publication, leaving the riddles we propound for the wisdom of the future to explain. We do not expect that our small fund of learning can, in the least, compare with the broad knowledge of the Sphinx, but through these pages we merely express the hope that our wisdom may increase with the years, till we reach the highest standard of this world’s intellect and the desire that our own meager Sphinx may appeal to us as one of the pleasant memories of our Class of 1912.” from the cover of the first Sphinx 2 JaSfe of Gon en s ADMINISTRATION.................................4 FACULTY........................................6 SENIORS.......................................11 JUNIORS.......................................34 SOPHOMORES....................................39 FRESHMEN......................................44 ACTIVITIES....................................49 ATHLETICS.....................................77 ADVERTISEMENTS................................90 3 J5 oar cl of C cfucation Ted Johnson, Ward Hanchett, Arlo Butcher, Ken Hayes, John Deppong, Bob Voleck, Ralph Chapin. SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE You are to be commended for attaining a most significant step in the pursuit of your purpose in life. Your school has endeavored to encourage and assist you in attaining these goals. Your parents and your church have played vital roles in your accomplishments to date. While I would strongly urge you to pursue your quest for relevance in our society, it would be my hope and conviction that this worthwhile objective would not be lost in a syndrome of purposeless rebellion. May I wish you every success, and urge you to re- tain your association with your school and your com- munity. R. E. DENNIS Superintendent A.B. Eastern Mich. U. M.A. U. of Michigan 4 Ac minis t.raiion an f Jacufti y PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE A better world in which to live is a sincere desire of almost every American citizen. The primary tool to assist all Americans with this goal is educa- tion. It is hoped that you have taken advantage of the education that has been placed before you. Before you can better the world you must first better yourself. Again, the key is education. Don’t stop with the knowledge you have received thus far. Continue to work and to achieve in order to enrich yourself. If each and every one of you will do this, then you will be doing your part in fulfilling your class motto of To better the world by first bettering ourselves.” DUANE L. ASH Principal B.S.
