Nash ( 905-1964) With deep humility, the Annual Staff dedicates this Sphinx to Raymond O. Nash, teacher and philosopher. “He was more than just a man; he was a combination of many men, for he bore the mark of Will Rogers, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Nathan Hale and many others. He was abundant in his wit, he never met a person he didn’t like; he believed compassionately in equal rights for all people and was a champion of the down-trodden; he spoke softly—yet he carried his big stick; and in the end he gave his life in doing that in which he so strongly believed —the restoration and preservation of self respect in all people. Yes—Mr. Nash is gone, but for that which he left with us we will be eternally grateful. Each of us will be a little more tolerant, a little more understanding, a little better person for his having beenhere.” Cohica—May 28, 1964 3 ADMINISTRATION Row 1. Secretary Robert Rhoads, Trustee Arlo Butcher, Treasurer Erwin Wing. Row 2. President Russell Olmsted, Trustee Ward Hanchett, Vice-President Ralph Chapin, Trustee Kenneth Hayes. Superintendent's Message Your school has made every effort to help you open the doors of opportunity for self ad- vancement enroute to an appropriate vocational or professional competence. If these experiences have not also awakened within you a genuine concern for people and an earnest conviction that something must be done about the current ills of our civilization, then in a sense surely both you and the school have failed. It is my hopeful expectation that each of you will, within this framework, accept your re- sponsibilities to yourself, your family, your associates, your community, and your God. While you may not expect to have to justify your life to others, you must in truth eventually justify it to yourself. R. E. Dennis 4 Congratulations seniors upon the completion of your high school education! Some of you will go on to colleges and universities to specialize, tohers will look to business and industry for your oc- cupation. Regardless of which road of life you enter, you'll see that education must continue and be a vital part of your success. While you're traveling be sure to remember some of the important things of life: The Golden Rule, service to others, truthfulness, sincerity, loyalty, and many others. These will also help to insure success in your future. Charles Alexander, Principal B.S.—Central Michigan U. M.A.—Michigan State U. During the entire period of your formal school training every effort has been made to provide you with necessary skills and attitudes to prepare you for a successful future in today’s busy society. Now it is up to you. Use the experiences and training, which you have received, wisely and with great determination to be a successful citizen. Above all else, be a good citizen, have a high regard for your country, and make your place in society one which you can be proud to occupy. Once again the Student Council began its yearly activities by sponsoring the Homecoming which is one of the most festive times during the school year. A project of the 1963-64 Council was completed with distribution of the All School Handbook. Projects of the year included: the “Dress Code” which was compiled and put into effect after a complete poll of the student body and has proved a most important and successful decision; the setting out of four trash barrels in an attempt to eliminate the litter problem between school and downtown; the purchase of a silver tea service for the use of the entire school; the financing and purchasing of the Nash Memorial plaque; the collecting and repairing of stuffed animals for the children at Caro Hospital for Christmas. These were evaluated by the board of teachers —Mr. Alexander, Mrs. Caylor, Miss McAvoy, Mr. Butts and Mrs. Race. Members were selected, tapped and installed in the spring. This year the Club helped the Student Council sort and distribute the All-School pictures. The money from this was used to design a torch and shield for in- stallation. The Corunna chapter had a busy year furthering their goal of working together to help individuals improve personal, family, and community living. The club members attended the regional meeting at Michigan State University as well as sending three delegates to the State meeting. The delegates were Betty Chalker who was a member of the State Choir, Darlene Valasek, and Barbara Kalisek. The club gave money to the State FH A Scholarship Fund which is awarded to a girl who wishes to further her education in Home Economics. Included in the year's program were an illustrated talk on her experiences in Hawaii by Mrs. Rex Dixon and a discussion of the pros and cons of a beautician's career led by Mrs. Heartly. To qualify for Homemaking Degrees the members worked in various areas throughout the year. Since homemakers are an important part of our society, girls should work to better themselves and their place in the community.
