The policies of the Corunna Public Schools are adopted by this group after thoughtful consideration. The completion of the aggenda set up by Supt. Dennis and the schoolboard itself covering the business of running the schools ef- ficiently and for the best interests of the community, takes many hours of work at the monthly meetings, the second Thursday of each month. As you graduates become tax-paying citizens of any community, may you accept your share of the responsibility for promoting bet- ter education. Left to right; Trustee Ralph Chapin, Secretary Harold Wallace, Vice President Arlo Butcher, President Kenneth Hayes, Treasurer Robert Rhoads. Trustee Russell Olmstead, Trustee Ervin Wing As I have said to you before, the processes of education never cease. The attainment of your High School Diploma is, indeed, a goal achieved, but new goals approach which require further education whether on a college campus or on the business field. Use your background from Corunna High School to build upon and to help you accept the responsibilities the world holds for you. Ray E. Dennis Let us all hope that all graduates, not only from Corunna High but across the nation, will assume the big responsibility that is theirs. It is not only a re- sponsibility, but an obligation for every individual to fulfill his role as a good citizen in a free society. This will involve hard work, charitable habits, coop- erative attitudes, and the sincere desire to improve relationships among all mankind. We hope that Corunna High School and the Cavalier tradition have helped you to meet this challenge. Charles Alexander, Principal B.S.-Central Michigan U. M.A.-Michigan State U. May all of you, as Seniors, be especially aware that as you complete your education at Corunna High School, the task of preparing yourselves for your place in society has not terminated. In this world of vastly increasing population, of technological advances, and of increasing pressures in the performance of the daily tasks, it is necessary to realize that a great deal of hard work lies ahead. It is essential, as well, that you be willing to accept this challenge with vigor and determination. GIgm, tMut uf, Our freshman year was relatively uneventful with only an end-of-the-year class party and a trip to Lake Lansing with the entire student body for parties. We also returned to Lake Lansing each of the other three years. Our sophomore yearâs project was the Sophomore Carnival with the teacher- dunking, the various ball throws, the fun house, and the usual fish pond. We also had one party toward the end of the year. The big event of the junior classes is their play. We chose a play entitled âMy Little Oscar.â In May we entertained the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Ban- quet with the theme, âSouthern Hospitality.â The Senior year is full of big things with the Senior Prom the biggest. We chose âCarouselâ as the theme which added to the festiveness of the party. An- other big event is the play entitled âAll Shook Upâ this year. Late in May we held our Skip Day. For the class project we chose to leave $300 to our library. Our four years at C.H.S. terminated June 7 with the receiving of our diplomas. Throughout our four years we have had many money-making projects. As freshmen and sophomores we sold bookcovers in the school colors with Corunna High on them. We also held postgame dances. Our junior year we held the play and had the basketball concessions stands and post-game dances. During our senior year we sold Cavalier pennants, as well as the refreshments at the con- cession stands. Student Gouncil Adviser - Mrs. Race President - Pat Andersen Vice-President - Dick Price Secretary - Barbara Woodworth Treasurer - Sandra Currie We started off our first meeting in September enthusiastically making plans for our first big event----Homecoming. Many little plans had to be made and carried out. Then there were the two main Homecoming attractions, the float and our homecoming queen. Before we got to executing our homecoming plans, it was time for the annual Student Council District meetings. We bundled up all our members, except junior high, and hurried off to the site of our meeting, Ann Arbor. We spent the day garthering many ideas which would tend to better our school and also our council. We got through Homecoming without any casualties, in fact we thought it was the best Homecoming weâve ever conducted. Then it was school picture time. The Student Council takes complete charge of school pictures as this is our big money making project. Soon it was time for our annual clothing drive. Itâs called âSave the Children Federation Drive,â and we ask all students to bring in any clothing they might be able to bring for people less fortunate then we. These were our big projects but in between these we did such things as: ratify club constitutions; buy an aluminum Christmas tree for the school; buy new cheerleading outfits; ratify student council pledge; subscribe to the National Association of Student Councils, and many other day to day things. February and May were busy months for the club. Members acted as hosts and hostesses to the first group of 275 books on display for junior high students as well as attending the Perry meeting of Shi-gra-ton, the three county organization for student librarians. In May we entertained the Shi-gra-ton group here. From 5- 5:30 was a renew-acquaintance time; 5:30 p.m.-dinner; 7:00-the business meeting followed by the program âLife in the Depthsâ to complete the eveningâs activities. Again we served as hosts and hostesses to âBooks On Exhibit,â this time a collection of 450 books on high school level and 470 elementary books which were viewed by many teachers and librar- ians throughout Shiawassee County. 37 ROW 1: J. The paper was named the âCohicaâ using the first two letters of each of the words: Corunna High Cavaliers. The paper went on sale each month at the price of 5ÂŁ per copy. In 1961, the newspaper resumed publication with Mrs. Ash con- tinuing in an advisory capacity until second semester when Mrs. Wolfe became adviser. Donna Pardonnet acted as the Editor and, later in the fall, Carol Freeman was named Co-Editor. The staff grew to thirty-one members who all worked hard to improve the paper and make it successful. âLucy Lovelorn to the the Rescue,â âMan on the Street,â âTeacher of the Month,â club news, and, of course, the gossip column were some of the fea- tures . Donna Pardonnet, the retiring editor, and her senior staff mem- bers hope that the âCohicaâ continues to appear for many more years and becomes more successful and more worthwhile with each issue. sH Donna Pardonnet- Editor Carol Freeman - Co-Editor Linda Schneider - Treasurer Lucy Kalisek - News Editor Sandra Currie - Club Editor Club Reporters Sarah Beckwith - Camera Sandra Currie - Student Council Carol Freeman - Varsity Carolyn Griffin - Red Cross Claire Ockerman - F.H.A. Each Monday night finds the Art Club members enthusiastically coming back to school for painting or craftwork of some design. During the year club members have made posters for many of the school activities. At Christmas time, many bulletin boards throughout the building displayed work of the art students and club members. Some of the members worked in copper while others painted in water colors and pastels. Several designed their own Christmas cards. In the spring the club joined with several other clubs of the school in an exhibit to show the creative results of our yearâs ac- tivities . Club Adviser - Mr. Clark President - Linda Ross Vice-President - Bill Ross Secretary - Carol Lobdell Treasurer - Janice Semans GcuneSia Club The Corunna Camera Club has been involved in many new and interesting activities this year. Among these were our magazine drive and our dance. The money earned from these was used to purchase supplies for the darkroom. Another interesting activity was our âMatch the Master Con- test.â Each member made a print that he thought was nearly per- fect and then we matched them to the master print. This year Ansco has sent us many new things including film- strips on darkroom procedures and photo finishing, and profes- sional photo displays. We also learned more about tinting by tinting our own protraits. Many of these were displayed in our Photo Show which took place in March. ROW 1: F. Ockerman, D. Hayes, P. Sabow, J. Semans, ROW 2: C. Junior Engineering Technical Society commonly called Jets was reorganized this year under the direction of Mr. Phillips. The pur- pose of the society is to aid the students in discovering and apprais- ing his own abilities, aptitudes and interests in many fields of sci- ence and engineering. The radioactive fall out project was the biggest activity of this year. Several samples of water were taken, prepared for testing, and then tested for radio-activity. However the tests were not too conclusive as the radio-activity seemed about normal. Mr. Wesley Leonard, an engineer from Consumers Powers Com- pany, attended a number of our meetings to see how we were pro- gressing and to give the club more ideas for projects. Our first trip, through the chemical laboratory of Harris Milling Company in Owosso, pointed out the great amount of scientific re- search necessary to keep improving a product. To view H.A.M. radios and their operation, the group visited Consumers Power Company in Flint. After an explanation of how H.A.M. radio works, a demonstration was given with many H.A.M.âs not only heard but also talked to. ROW 1: B. Benjamin, Mr. Phillips, S. Currie, ROW 2: W. Knerr, R. In the Fall, the clubâs eight members planned a membership cam- paign resulting in a total membership of twenty. November 4, many of the members spent an enjoyable, worth- while day at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, attending the sixth F.T.A. Area Conference sponsored by the Charles L. Anspach Chapter of the Student Education Association in co- operation with the Michigan Education Association. In December Corunna Teachers Club entertained our club at their regular meeting. Hazel Smith, President of FTA, explained many features of the club including the point system. After the members introduced themselves, the meeting was turned over to Bill Ross, also a FTA member, who showed the slides he had recently taken while in Europe. Refreshments were served as the closing event. Again this year the club participated in the two weeksâ mag- azine drive along with the FHA and Camera Club. Although the top salesman wasnât in the FTA Club, we came out on top with $92 profit and with Gene Brenneis, Dave Hamlet and Diane Baker receiving prizes or citations for total sales. Also, during this year, our point system was improved in that points are now given to officers and for Sunday school teaching; a constitution was drawn up and adopted; the office of reporter was added; and an FTA pledge was adopted by the club. The pledge deals with the requirements of a teacher under the head- ings: physical vitality, mental vigor, moral discrimination, wholesome personality, helpfulness, knowledge, and leadership. In the Spring at the awards assembly pins were given to officers and members earning 100 points. In the fall we attended a regional meeting at Charlotte, Michigan. Although the main order of business was to vote for state officers, we met many members from other F.H.A.âs and heard discussions of the values of F.H.A. and of the developing of girls, personality- wise and interest-wise. For money making projects we held a car-wash which was suc- cessful in spite of the rainy October afternoon. Following this was the magazine subscription drive. We came out very well. The F.H.A. and the F.F.A. of Corunna were invited to join the F.H.A. and F.F.A. of Owosso for a roller skating party at the Cha- teau Roller Skating Rink. Many of our members attended and had a very enjoyable time. The sale of cook books in the spring helped us to raise additional funds. The Mother-Daughter tea ended the yearâs activities. Jim Boland, Bob Parkinson, Mike Mills, Eugene Ellsworth, and Frank Svrcek from our chapter were on Blair Woodmanâs Farm Forum over W.O.A.P., on the subject of âOpportunities in Agricul- ture.â This year we also had contestants entered in a contest for the highest yield of corn per acre. This contest was sponsored by the DeKalb Seed Corn Company. It is the aim and hope of our advisor and of our officers that the future will bring even greater interests and activities as the chap- ter continues to expand. Many worthwhile projects are possible for the boys interested in agriculture and its related areas. 44 (led Gnate The training of fifteen Junior Gray Ladies was one of our high- lights. Some of our other pro- jects were: building and filling a school chest, packing gift boxes to be sent overseas to needy children, collecting items for the clubâs new scrapbook. Since the form of the club meetings is very flexible, the member has a chance to work on his project for the greater part of the meeting time. This uninterrupted time each week allows him to accomplish about as much as during a whole weekâs time in shop class. The project areas vary as the members wish, extending from autos to bowls. We gave each of the Moms a mum and after the game we held a get-together for the players and their folks. All of the former and present coaches who did not have a block âCâ to wear on a suit or other apparel were given one. The Varsity Club presented all seniors with a sheepskin award. In the fall about 20 members canoed from the Y.M.C.A. camp at Bancroft to the Shiawassee Town Dam. No one was âdunkedâ but a few paddles had to be replaced. In February the Club joined with the Varsity Club for a skating party at Mike Craneâs Landing. No broken bones; but good ap- petites for the hot dogs and pop.
