V (2 VUU Uta, 'ytytyA School “PredeKte SPHINX 1954-1955 (2 IUK4MI. 0?7tic6i ?a t Just a thank you could not completely express the feeling of gratitude that this staff would like to ex- tend to all who made possible this year's annual. Expecially to Mr s. Ross, who guided us in our lay- out and writeups, to Mr. Andersen and Mr. Dennis for their advice and encouragement, to the Craine Studios for their fine pictures and co-operation in helping us to meet our deadline, to the American Yearbook Co. and their representative, Mr. Hanselmen, for their fine printing and publishing we express our thanks. Our gratitude to the merchants and businessmen whose advertising made our annual financially secure. We once again say Thanks. The Staff. (?l l44e4 s4ctiuitie 2 Education is the greatest factor in the im- provement of mankind and touches every point in the upward struggle of civilization--a factor which takes on added significance as we pres- ently find ourselves living in agreat atomic age. Under our direction for the past thirteen years, you have come to realize the basic tenets of a well rounded education. These would seem to include, among other things, the awareness of the responsibilities this same democratic citi- zenship imposes upon each of us, the absolute necessity to our way of life of the highest spir- itual, moral, and ethical behavior, the recep- tiviness to new ideas, freedom from prejudice, an ability to distinguish between appearance and reality, and the worthy use of leisure time. May this education which you have received and that which you are about to begin give you independence of character and an intelligently discriminating mind, and lead you far along moral, industrial, and intellectual roads. R. E. Dennis This book is being published to give you stu- dents a record of events that have happened dur- ing the past year. In years to come you will leaf through these pages and recall the many pleasant memories and experiences that you have had during your school. For you Seniors it will be the last time for you to take part in publishing the annual. It will also mark the end of your high school days. As alumni I hope that each of you will come back and visit with us. Your school is dedicated to help each of you to get a well rounded, basic education so that youcantake your place in society. We as faculty members hope you have learned well. May you all enjoy success in the future. H. A. Andersen Sponsored by Homill’s Standard Station 3 CHARLES ALEXANDER, B. S. Coach, Drivers Ed. As class officers we elected President, Phil Bendall; Vice President, Sharon Bedford; Secretary, Pat Flynn; and Treasurer, Phil Brooks. V e were aided by Mr. Kapenga. As the year ended we had adjusted ourselves to high school activities and looked for- ward to the next year. As sophomores we entered our new high school, much to our enjoyment. As officers we elected President, Phil Bendall; Vice President, George Davis; Sec- retary, Pat Flynn; and Treasurer, Ted Evans. As advisor we elected Mr. An- dersen. This year we enjoyed initiating the Freshmen. We also sponsored movies, two dances, and put on an assembly. As Juniors we elected President, Phil Bendall; Vice President, Phil Brooks; Secretary, Pat Flynn; and Treasurer, Sue Linabury. Mr. Alexander and Miss Woods were our class advisors. The thrill of the year was the purchase of our class rings. We produced our Junior Play, People Are Funny , which was highly successful. Candy was sold in the halls and at the games and we spon- sored a dance. We enjoyed honoring the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Banquet. Seniors at last! This was a great honor to us for this was a definite step toward our future. We had worked hard toward this goal and were proud to be the graduating class of 55 . As officers we elected Phil Bendall, President for the fourth year; Vice President, Joe Libra; Secretary, Pat Flynn; and Treas- urer Sue Linabury. Two advisors, Mr. Alexander and Miss Woods were needed to help us in our enthusiastic plans. We started the year's activities by selling taffy, Christmas cards, and we had a concession stand at the football games. The Case of the Missing Heirs was the title of our Senior Play under the direction of Miss Spaniola. It was successful, and we greatly enjoyed giving it. Memories of the year were senior pictures which we traded with our classmates and will cherish in years to come. A memorable occasion was our Prom which we had as much fun planning and decorating as we did attending. Finally the trip which we had been planning and working for for four years, became a reality. We spent our glorious five day trip at Washington, D. C. and New York, which was interesting, educational and lots of fun. With Graduation exercises, our high school career was brought to a close. We again looked eagerly and with quite some anticipation toward the future but not without a backward glance and pleasant thoughts about our experience in one of the best-----Corunna High School. The story was laid in a small town hotel lobby run by Mrs. Craig (Kay Johnson). Bruce Clyde (Bill Renwick), a newspaper editor, was about to be fired by Julia Boyd (Audrey Duncan), unless he could dig up something sensational to boost the circulation. When Allen Kent (Denny Kelly) sent word that he was coming back from the Solomons with a real live Cannibal Queen, Bruce pounced on the startling news. This would sell newspapers but was Bruce ever horrified when he discovered there was no Queen at all. Trying to solve his problem, he talked his sweetheart Brenda Day (Marilyn Mallery) into pretending to be the Cannibal Queen. Everything went along fine until juju (Edna Jamnick), the real Cannibal Queen appeared. However. Bruce was able to straighten out the whole situation and the play ended hilariously with juju chasing Lucious (Charlie Nalepa), the colored elevator boy, porter and general handy man out of the hotel. Not only did they capture the Conference Championship, but they attained an un- defeated season and the best record in Corunna's history. This record was obtained through the hard work of the team and the excel- lent coaching of Mr. Alexander and Mr. Phillips. The team was rated ninth in the state in class C competition. The boys who received honors on all state teams were halfback Phil Brooks, tackle Neal Reavely and end Allen Walker. At the end of the season quarterback Joe Libra was elected honorary cap- tain and tackle Neal Reavely was chosen the most valuable player. The football and band banquet was held in January with Nick Kerbeway, general manager of the Detroit Lions, the main speaker. Gold footballs were presented to the letter winners along with some individual awards.
