VALEDICTORIAN SALUTATORIAN Ladies and Gentlemen, members of the faculty and fellow classmen. As we. the class of 54, are now ready to leave school and find our place in society we will enter a very un- certain and troubled world. With the free nations on one side and communism on the other side we are very fortunate to secure our education in a free world where there is a chance for advancement. Many of us will go on for a higher education, but many are ready to find their place now. With many fields in science still to be covered, and jobs available in almost any line you are interested in, we have a great opportunity before us. Although the country offers us much in advance- ment we still have many problems to workout in order to provide a free country for the next generation to embark upon. Communism is advancing fast and needs every cap- able person to fight against it. We have only truce in Korea and threats from other countries, but the head officials representing us. are working hard to protect us and need your strength and assurance behind them en- couraging them on. We are now ready to stand among the rest of the people of the free nations to face these problems. As we graduate we give thanks to our parents and teachers for the advice and guidance which they gave us in the time when we needed it most, and we hope they will be willing to advise and guide us in the fu- ture. Ladies and Gentlemen, members of the faculty and fellow class mates. It is my privilege to welcome you here in behalf of the Senior Class, and I hope you will enjoy the program as much as we. as a class, have en- joyed preparing it for you. This is a night for fun. but it is only proper that we get a bit serious before the fun starts. During this month Seniors from all over are facing the world alone for the first time. Our success depends upon the preparation we have made for this moment. We have just completed twelve years of professional preparation plus five or six years of pre-school train- ing. During this time we have always had capable teachers to turn to for advice and assistance. We have learned to get along with each other and respect the rights of other people through vocational training we have learned how to take care of ourselves and our fu- ture families. Some of us have prepared ourselves for further education and will continue on to college. But these twelve years of schooling are the real foundation of our lives. And to us it represents the most important part. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have played such an important part in our lives, our first teachers, who helped us to open the doors to education, for all their kindness and understanding. Also each and every one of the teachers during our twelve years, not only for their help in the classroom, but for their interest in us in all activities. For by education. Ido not mean entirely, reading, writing and arithmetic. Those things are highly important—a basic necessity, but hand in hand with those things must go character training that will build a spiritual and mental being that will stand when we have ceased to study the three R's and have began to use them. And last but by no means least we would like to thank our parents for the sacrifices they have made so that we may be here as a group tonight. We may not have realized at times the great part they have played in our education, but we know now that they have al- ways been at our side with encouragement to always better ourselves and to never set aside this greatest of all opportunities given to us--our own public schools. And in closing, to my own mother and dad I would like to say— God bless you for kindness which you have shown to me, For every act of friendship and tender sympathy. For all the joys you've scattered along my busy way Have really, truly mattered--for more than I can say. Thank you. 9
