The fact of graduation indicates a reasonable accomplishment of these accepted educational objectives. The future, however, will put you to the real test of the merit of your education. Do not disappoint those parents and teachers who have worked so willingly and capably with you. Above all do not disappoint yourselves. Make the most of your lives and good luck to all of you. Your years here at Corunna High have been happy ones. The school exists for you. We hope you have used it to the best of your abilities and make the best of your opportunities in the future. We of the faculty have tried, during the past four years, to give each of you everything that could be done to stimulate your development and prepare you for the life in the future. In the future remember that you are still a part of Corunna High School with the right to come back to us for any help we can give to you. We hope we can be of service to you again sometime. Congratulations and much success to all of you in the future. R. E. Dennis-Superintendent Holger Andersen-Principal 5 Dale Wightman, B. S. Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Ag. Science Donna Boulee, B; S. As we. the class of 54, are now ready to leave school and find our place in society we will enter a very un- certain and troubled world. With the free nations on one side and communism on the other side we are very fortunate to secure our education in a free world where there is a chance for advancement. Many of us will go on for a higher education, but many are ready to find their place now. With many fields in science still to be covered, and jobs available in almost any line you are interested in, we have a great opportunity before us. Although the country offers us much in advance- ment we still have many problems to workout in order to provide a free country for the next generation to embark upon. Communism is advancing fast and needs every cap- able person to fight against it. We have only truce in Korea and threats from other countries, but the head officials representing us. are working hard to protect us and need your strength and assurance behind them en- couraging them on. We are now ready to stand among the rest of the people of the free nations to face these problems. As we graduate we give thanks to our parents and teachers for the advice and guidance which they gave us in the time when we needed it most, and we hope they will be willing to advise and guide us in the fu- ture. Ladies and Gentlemen, members of the faculty and fellow class mates. It is my privilege to welcome you here in behalf of the Senior Class, and I hope you will enjoy the program as much as we. as a class, have en- joyed preparing it for you. This is a night for fun. but it is only proper that we get a bit serious before the fun starts. During this month Seniors from all over are facing the world alone for the first time. Our success depends upon the preparation we have made for this moment. We have just completed twelve years of professional preparation plus five or six years of pre-school train- ing. During this time we have always had capable teachers to turn to for advice and assistance. We have learned to get along with each other and respect the rights of other people through vocational training we have learned how to take care of ourselves and our fu- ture families. Some of us have prepared ourselves for further education and will continue on to college. But these twelve years of schooling are the real foundation of our lives. And to us it represents the most important part. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have played such an important part in our lives, our first teachers, who helped us to open the doors to education, for all their kindness and understanding. Also each and every one of the teachers during our twelve years, not only for their help in the classroom, but for their interest in us in all activities. For by education. Ido not mean entirely, reading, writing and arithmetic. Those things are highly important—a basic necessity, but hand in hand with those things must go character training that will build a spiritual and mental being that will stand when we have ceased to study the three R's and have began to use them. And last but by no means least we would like to thank our parents for the sacrifices they have made so that we may be here as a group tonight. We may not have realized at times the great part they have played in our education, but we know now that they have al- ways been at our side with encouragement to always better ourselves and to never set aside this greatest of all opportunities given to us--our own public schools. And in closing, to my own mother and dad I would like to say— God bless you for kindness which you have shown to me, For every act of friendship and tender sympathy. For all the joys you've scattered along my busy way Have really, truly mattered--for more than I can say. Thank you. 9 ALICE ADE, General Course Quiet indeed, but always willing to help. Some of us were from Junior High, others came in from the country schools. After we had a chance to get acquainted the Student Council had their traditional initia- tion day. Though all of us dreaded it, it proved to be quite a lot of fun. That night we were honored at a dance at the casino. This year we had a dance and parties which turned out to be a success. Mr. Akins was chosen for our class advisor for the next 4 years. Our class officers were President-Alice Price; Vice President-Harold Taylor; Secretary-Gerald Taylor; Treasurer-Ned Lake. We ended pur Freshman year by a class party at Lake Lansing, which was a lot of fun. At the beginning of our Sophomore year we were a little more sure of our- selves. As Sophomore class officers we elected President Melvin Berry; Vice President Larry Flagg; Secretary Sharalyn Roberts; Treasurer Joan Sersen. This years activities consisted of a dance, movies and a popularity contest in which Sophomore boys sponsored the different girls through the high school. The winners were first place, Alice Price, second place, Marie Flynn, third place, Jane Watson. We prospered by them all. Upperclassmen at last! In our Junior year we chose Melvin Berry as Pres- ident, Charles Fernette as Vice President, Jean Zalesak as Secretary and Millie Flynn as Treasurer. Our activities for this year were as follows: a Junior and Senior Banquet, movies, bake sale, dances, concession stands at the games, sale of Taffy. Our Junior Play which was held November 25, 1952 and was a great success. The new high school which we entered this year made things more bearable for the Junior Class. We closed the school year by a party at Lake Lansing. Now we are Seniors! As class officers we elected: Ralph Stewart,Pres- ident, Larry Flagg, Vice President, Shirley Sheler, Treasurer and Millie Flynn, Secretary. Mr. Andersen and Mrs. Ross are our class advisors this year. We started this year's activities by having concession stands at the games, sold taffy and Christmas Cards. The highlight of our Senior year was the Senior Trip to Washington, April 21st. Our Prom, April 3rd, and Our Senior Play which was December 2nd and 3rd, were two of the biggest thrills for the Seniors. For our class motto we chose: Enter to learn, go forth to serve. Class colors are green and silver and our class flower is the white rose. 14 SENIOR HALL OF FAME Best Looking Julia Kelly Charles Fernette Most Popular Julia Kelly Melvin Berry Best Athletes Shirley Sheler Melvin Berry Most Bashful Mary Jane Kanzel Keith Elkins Fashion Plates Barbara Ward Ralph Stewart Most Original Mary Quayle Bill Mallery Best Dancer Julia Kelly Melvin Berry Class Wits Shy Roberts Rom Kuechman Class Brains Millie Flynn Bill Matzen Best Citizen Jean Zalesak Larry Flagg Most Friendly Alice Price Dick Self Most Likely to Succeed Millie Flynn Dan Worthington Most Carefree Shy Roberts Bill Mallery Most Striking Barbara Ward Jim Martin Optimists Shirley Sheler Tom Kuechman Pessimists Sylvia Stewart Clarence Kramp Sense of Humor Shy Roberts Larry Flagg Best Complexion Barbara Ward Jim Aldrich Most Courteous Alice Ade Gary Sanderson Most Talented Mary Quayle Ralph Stewart Arguers Helen Miller Allan Shire Most Agreeable Lois Brandt Dick Self ' Class Orator Alice Price Jim Holmberg Always Late Alice Price Larry Schlaack Hot Rods Sylvia Stewart Gene Sanderson Class Pest Joan Hildbrant Dick Clark 15 CLASS WILL I, Alice Ade, will my fights with Ted Evans to Marian Root. After everyone had recuperated from the annual Freshman Initiation, we carried on such activities as a turkey raffle, a ham raffle and a dance. We also sold sweatshirts with the Cavalier insignia on them. Our Freshman year went by so fast that we barely had time to catch our breaths before we were Sophomores. As Sophomores we had the pleasure of the Freshman Initiation which was quite successful. This year we elected Charles Nalepa, President; Bill Renwick, Vice-President; Dennis Kelly, Sec- v retary; and Kay Johnson, Treasurer. Our first act was to choose our class sponsor, Mr. Bohac, and co- sponsor, Mrs. Boulee, both new members of the faculty. We also chose our class officers: President, John Schenpp; Vice-President, Larry Run- yan; Secretary, Rose Spaniola; Treasurer, Joanne Kalisek, For our class song, we picked Tenderly and, for our class flower, we chose a white carnation. We also agreed on Conduct and Courage lead to Honor, as our class motto and green and white for our colors. Our biggest trial thru out the year was the traditional freshmen initia- tion which the sophomores handled very well. Our first real money-making project was a dance, called Winter Won- derland . We gained $50. proceeds. As we end the year with a band-up party, we're looking forward to our second year in high school and hope it will be as successful as this year has been. This year the Cavalier football team turned in one of the schools best foot- ball records in its history, under the fine coaching of Mr. Alexander and as- sistant coach, Mr. Wightman. They brought a team, who in the previous year, was on the bottom, to the top and shared the first place title with Elsie in the Conference. From the first day of practice till the last, the squad had only one thing in mind and that was to win, which they did in eight of nine games. A com- bination of hard work, determination, and fine coaching was the answer to this year's record. For the first game they went to Dewitt and started the season off with a good start by downing Dewitt. Then St. Pauls and Flint Central B. were their next victims at home before Chesaning came over and upset us in a game the team will never forget. It was the first Conference game and a tough one to lose. They didn't let this stop them, however, but went on to win the following five, Ovid, Elsie and Durand; the home-coming game, and then Perry to assure us of the Conference. The last game was with Laingsburg, a non-Conference game and ending a season which the team was very proud of. We scored 189 points against our opponents 59. Phil Brooks was the top scorerwithl2 T-D's. He received additional honors by being selected on the Detroit Free Press Associated press team as Honorable mention All-State Halfback. Chuck Fernette, Fullback, was second with 7 T-D's. PhilBendall, halfback, was elected by the players as honorary Captain of the squad for the 1953 year. We expect to have another very good year next year with good replacements for the Seniors that will have Graduated. The Cavaliers opened their '53-'54 basketball season with ten letter- men returning plus Sophomore Allen Walker and Senior Bill Mallery. The only school in the conference with a full squad returning, we were some- what favored for the title. Junior Joe Libra was in the upper bracket as far as scoring goes with 142 points in nine conference games. We hope he does as good or better next year. WE THEY 1. Fowler 33 82 2. M. S. D. 49 40 3. The little Cavaliers under their new coach, Gene Phillips, did not have too good a record, winning 4 of 14 games. They had a young team made up of Freshmen and Sophomores, with a few Juniors who played last year. Leading the team in scoring were Juniors Don Lashaway and Jim Thayer, Sophomore Bruce Schnepp, and Freshman Larry Runyan. What they learned playing on the Junior Varsity will help them in the next few years to become better Varsity players. The little Cavaliers are in fourth place in the conference race. Reading From Left to Right: FIRST ROW: Joe Libra, Phil Brooks, George Davis. Larry Schlaack, Dick Self, Mel- vin Berry. SECOND ROW: Jerald Lounsbury, Harvey Dutcher, Allen Walker, Don Lashaway, Keith Elkins, Ted Evans, Chuck Fernette. THIRD ROW: Bruce Schnepp, Dale Aurand, Allen Shire, Bill Matzen, Bill Renwick, Jack Horton. Coach-Gene Philips. TRACK The Corunna Cavalier' s track team is being guided under a new coach, Gene Philips, who was a former star of Corunna High. As only one athlete graduated from last year's team many lettermen are back for this year's squad. The team will be built around Dick Self in the broad jump, high jump and both hurdles; Larry Schlaack who holds the Central C high jump record of 5'4 also excels in the 880 yd. run. Jerald Lounsbury in the 440 and Phil Brooks in the 100 and 220 yd dashes make up the remainder of the main letter men returning. The Cavaliers placed fourth in the Conference meet at Owosso last year. This spring's schedule will include meets with the Conference teams plus M. S. D. of Flint and St. John's High School. The State Regional Track meet is May 15 at Flint and the State Finals at Ann Arbor on May 22nd. The Central C will again hold their championship meet at Owosso during May. FIRST ROW: J. Holmberg, B. Wright, B. Schnepp, N. Reavely, L. Maudlin, D. Mehigh.-R. Dutcher, Manager. This year Corunna looked forward to as good a year in baseball as they had had in the other sports. Coach Alexander had all but one of the regulars back and tried to bring baseball to the top this year in Corunna as he had football and basketball. Last year Corunna had a 2 win 3 loss record in the conference. They beat Durand and Chesaning but dropped to Ovid, Elsie and Perry. These last three years, however, were very close, but the Caviliers came out on the short end. Each conference team is played once this year as well as playing the Owosso J. V.s, St. Paul, Laingsburg New Lorthrop. 33 Joe Ellen Sprague, peppy little mas- cot. has added much vim and vigor to our cheering section this year. CHEERLEADERS This year athletic teams were supported strongly by Cheerleader's, Shirley Taylor, Captain; the only vet- eran. The new Cheerleaders elected by the Student Body were Rose Spaniola, Joan Libby. Julia Kelly, Iris Dally. They did a swell job in adding to the teams spirit. Their advisor is Miss Alma Stace. 31 FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Millie Flynn, Shirley Taylor, Julia Kelly, Sharalyn Roberts, Pat Flynn. On October 28, 1953, Julia Kelly was crowned Queen of Corunna's first annual Homecoming by co-captain Melvin Berry. Queen Julia was escorted to the game by Ralph Stewart, senior class presi- dent. The court consisting of Mildred Flynn, Sharalyn Roberts, Pat Flynn, and Shirley Taylor, were escorted by Gary Sanderson, Dale Aurand, Kenny Spore and Jim Aldrich. The Queen received a beautiful compact from the football team. On the face of it was engraved to Queen Julia, '53 and on the back football team. She also received a check from the Chamber of Commerce and an ice cream cake from Tony Spaniola. The Queen and court were escorted to the dance by five of the members of Corunna's winning football team, namely, Larry Flagg, Melvin Berry, Allen Shire, Joe Libra and George Davis. The dance was held in honor of the Queen and her court. STUDENT COUNCIL President..........Melvin Berry Vice-President............Larry Flagg Secretary.................Alice Price Treasurer .... During the year some of the projects sponsored were: Dances after the home football games, the annual Christmas program, the annual school pic- tures taken by Avalon Studio, the purchase of a new P. A. system. 37 Seated from Left to Right: Shirley Sheler. Joan Hildebrant, Lary Schlaack, Alice Price, Bill Matzen. Alice Ade. Standing: Miss Spaniola, Julia Kelly. Melvin Berry, Allan Shire, Jean Zalesak, Millie Flynn. On the 2nd and 3rd of December, the Senior class of Corunna High School presented their class play, Deadly Ernest. It was a comedy in 3 acts and was enjoyed by everyone. Miss Josephine Spaniola directed the play. April 7 marked the date of the Junior play, People are Funny, which pre- sented the Saunders family, eight in number. The height of the football season finds Bob Saunders, captain of the foot- ball team, anxiously coaching Johnny, the star of the football team, in English. If Johnny, an Indian, fails the test he will be ineligible. To add to the confusion the man who hired Johnny off the reservation threatens to send him back. Mr. Saunders, who is a lawyer, goes to work on this problem and proves that Johnny is really not an Indian. Consequently the man is unable to send him back. After the English exam is passed, Johnny is able to play the last foot- ball game. 39 LIBRARY STAFF 1st row-Mary Jane Kanzel, Sue Linabery, Joan Hildebrant, Arlene Self, Sally Strawsine, Audrey Duncan. 2nd row-Betty Moats.
