' . 1 1 1 On September 5 1952 twenty three freshmen enrolled tn Cortland Htgh School Mr Drmgenburg was our sponsor The members of the class were F reddxe Allman Shtrley Allman Em1he Alwes Emma Lou Anderson W1lmaBrowmng RosemarteCarpenter Dor1sDar1age Ruth Franke Marhs Hercamp Anna Belle Hurt Dxck Isaacs Patty Oathout Wanda Rucker Don Robertson Thelma Rust Carolyn Retchenba Lourse Stxlwell Patty Sterlxng JoAnn Schafstall Raymond Thompson Lorretta Trueblood Charlotte Von Hoene and Kathleen W1ll1ams Durmg our freshman year B1l1y Lee came to Jotn us At the beglnrung of our sophomore year we enrolled w1th 22 members and wtth Mr Drmgenburg as our sponsor Rosemarte Carpenter and Btlly Lee d1d not return that year but we gamed Sharon Pettay from Clearsprmg Betty Spurgeon from Freetown also came to be our classmate Dur1ng the year we had several skating parttes at Rok sey and a hayrtde and wlener roast at the home of Enulte Alwes We also sold hot dogs at school We recelved our class rlngs tn March of that year Wtth Mr Drtngenburg as our sponsor we started out J un1or year wlth the same persons except Betty Spurgeon who dec1ded she hked Freetown School better Dur1ng the year we had skanng parues and a hayrtde at Charlotte s We had a paper dr1ve and sold stattonary and napktns durmg the year The class play Call Me Darlmg was gtven and was a grand success Dur1ng the month of March we began planmng for our Jumor and Semor Recepnon the theme was Aprll Showers The gymnastum was ga1ly decorated wxth crepe paper raxndrops a large rambow across one end of the gymnaslum and wtth m1n1ature umbrellas and flowers on the tables Durmg the dxnner speeches were gtven by students and faculty members After the dlnner there was a dance whxch was attended by Jumors and semors faculty members and some of the Jumors parents who helped wtth refreshments We began our semor year wtth only twenty students Patty Oathout had moved to Indlanapohs and Kathleen Wtlhams moved to Mxclugan We were all pleased to have Mr Drtngenburg as our sponsor because he IS so he1pfuL Dur1ng the year we have been busy wrth a paper dr1ve prepar1ng our annual and prmtmg the school paper We have had several surprtse btrthday partles through out the year We have chosen blue caps and gowns for the commencement Our colors are blue and whtte and the flower ts a red carnatton Our class motto xs L1fe Is What We Make It We have dec1ded to go to Washmgton D C and New York on our semor tr1p We are all loolung forward to the tr1p 5' One day tn the early fall of 1966 Wtlma and I Patrtcta dec1ded to VlSlI our former classmates Havtng recetved letters from most of them we ftgured tt would be qulte easy to locate them So leavxng our husbands John Frlsche and Randy Guffey behlnd we started on our way Our ftrst stop was 1n Danvtlle Kentucky There we saw Fred h1s wtfe Vtrgtnta and thetr four boys Fred ts a hxgh school coach at Danvtlle Our next stop was tn Memphls Tennessee We learned that Em1l1e Alwes IS teach1ng tn a small school We wtll tnform you that Emlhe IS very happy and successful 1n her work there U 1 ' . 1 . 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 9 1 1 1 l 1 1 1 1 1 1 - 1 . - 1 - 1 . . 1 0 1 . . , . . . . 1 CO ' ll ' ' v 1 1 1 . . . . . N 1 1 1 . 1 1 1 1 1 - , . 1 1 1 v 1 1 1 1 , . . 1 T ravehng through South Carol1na we stopped 1n Charleston There we saw Slurley and her husband Eddxe Re1chenbacker They are owners of a hotel Eddte and Sh1rley have three boys and two glrls GOIUQ through Florlda we saw the former Anna Belle Hurt She IS owner of a motel l.l'l Lake C1ty Travehng to MISSISSIPPI we stopped 1n Jackson to get some gas We were very surpr1sed when D1Ck Isaacs told us he owned the servxce stat1on In Lou1s1ana we made our stop 1n Lafayette to eat We were glad that we chose Ray s Restaurant because we learned that Sharon Pettay IS a waltress there Gomg through Texas we heard that Raymond Thompson owns a ranch He has about f1ve thousand cattle and h1s home IS a very expenslve southern manslon After leav1ng Texas we went to New Mexlco where we had heard that Marl1s Hercamp now Mrs Delbert K1lgas 1s l1v1ng Her husband Delbert IS the head of a road constructton company GOUIQ through Arlzona we found Don Robertson He IS lfl the Army and stat1oned at Davts F1eld In Utah we decxded to stop and try to locate Charlotte and Lorretta To our surprtse they are operatmg a Beauty Salon together Go1ng from Utah to Colorado our car shd off mto a d1tch We went to the nearest farm house stall s husband They owned a 220 acre farm and seemed to be very happy Travehng on to Wyommg we learned that Thelma Rust now Mrs Joe Jaskey IS operat1ng a soda founta1n Golng on our way to Montana we stopped to VISII one of the h1gh schools and who should be thetr home econorrucs teacher but Emma Lou Anderson Emma Lou mformed us that Carolyn Re1chenba IS attendmg a beaut1c1an school 1n Montana So we declded to stop to see her as we went on our way to South Dakota In South Dakota we learned that Ruth Franke IS secretary to the governor of that state Of course we d1dn t belxeve It at f1rst nevertheless ll IS true Travehng from South Dakota to Iowa we learned that Wanda Rucker 1S teachlng school Wanda IS happ1ly marr1ed and has three ch1ldren On our way back to Ind1ana we stopped 1n ll11no1s to see 1f we could locate Dor1s Darlage Dor1s IS a pr1vate secretary After leavtng ll11no1s we returned to Ind1ana We enjoyed our tr1p very much but we were glad to get back After we got back we went to report our tr1p to Mr. Harlan Dr1ngenburg who was our class sponsor Mr Drmgenburg IS very happy 11V1Ilg w1th h1S wtfe and four ch1ldren He was very glad to hear that h1s former pup1ls were very successful 1n hfe . . l . At the end of the school year, they will have enjoyed a Halloween party, Thanksgiving Dinner, an exchange of gifts at Christmas, a New Year's party, Valentine party, and many other parties. Mrs. Baird, the teacher has taught fifteen years. Ten of those years were at Surprise, and the last five years here at Cortland, which means that her complete career has been spent here in Hamilton Township. There are twenty boys and sixteen girls. The first grade has several activities during the year. They include a Halloween party, Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas program, exchange of Christmas gifts, and a few others. Miss Freida helps the children to make decorations for the room to celebrate the main holidays. Mrs. Freida Bevers has been teaching eighteen years. She has always taught in the primary room and has taught in Hamilton Township every year with the exception of one. Her first teaching position was at Surprise School. '11, A X Vi? lm ,ZLUO The Cortland Eagles opened their athletic season by playing baseball. We had a lot of ftm playing under a new coach, Mr. Sam Wiley. On October 1 we started playing basketball. There were several boys trying very hard for the team but there were only ten, who were chosen for the varsity squad, and twenty-five chosen for the reserve squad.
