IELJU I.J'U'I.E Newspaper Lacks Funds by Diane Kreitler As edltor of the school newspaper, I see every phase of the newspaper production pro- cess, but without one essential element thls process can not even begin . . . funds. ' 1960 tudents t C rt have been Since a a o ez paylng a small fee of S1 charge of registration for one school year's subscription to The Spoc- fafor. Printing Oosls more than quadrupled since then but the S1 charge remalns the same. The staff tries in every way lt can to ralse enough money to goroduce at least one newspaper a month. sts for a 6-page lssue nm about 5600. The S1 per student currently pays for 2'lz lssues. The rest of the issues must be paid for by selling enough ads and having enough bagel sales to somehow ralse enough money for the Issues. Each year as costs go up lt gets harder and harder to raise the funds. After thls Issue we will be out of money completely. We are again trying to 82 advertisers to support us, but unltl we false necessary monles for another Issue or get money from some other source lt looks as Lhoug thls could be our last Issue for some me. Th' SP9Cf0f0r has won many national awards for the paper as a whole and for individual writers, as well as being a six-time consecutive winner of the George H. Gallup Award, the highest award given to a hlgh school newspaper for its general excellence of news coverage and leadership. 1'he school ad- ministration, stzfvzand students are very sup- eo o portiv urw . It would certainly be a shame lf this publlce- tion could no onger brlng a aplrlt of togethemess to Cortez because lt lacked the necessary funds that district authorltles don't seem to understand we desperately need. Within thls issue, the staff would like to glve its sincere thanks to all of our readers, and with your support, another lssue may bo possible. LETTER TO THE EDITOR YEARBCCK CLASS NEEDED Dear Editor, The yearbook as well as the newspaper is faced with a crucial dilemma. Compliments of The Spectator Staff. Beside appeared in the January 31, 1986 Volume 25, no. 5 Below also Compliments of The Spectator Staff. It appeared in the February 26, 1986 Volume 25, no. 6 Like the newspaper, you cannot function without funds, well the yearbook may not be able to function next year without a class. For the past four years, the yearbook staff has had to do without a class, and each year the task becomes harder and harder to do. As I and Mr. Schlenker have argued, it is almost impossible to complete the year- book without a class, but administration still keeps it closed. Six out of nine schools in the district have publication classes. Those schools have had successful yearbooks that have been delivered on time. Each year the staff is told that if we have enough students for a class the class is ours. Our staff has been refused a class in '83-'84 and '84-'85. We are only asking for a one-semester publications class, a class to finish the book. Without a class, Cortez may be without a yearbook. l hope that this letter will show Cortez how much the yearbook needs your support. Should we be denied a class once more we could be cir- culating a petition to keep our Cortesian alive. Keeping the spirit of our yearbook is what we are fighting for. Sincerely, Veronica Lucas Editor-In-Chief Due? WAN A YA ANglPFICuiJ7ESf 5'-A spam-am Q19 EDITORIALILETTER TO EDITOR 23
