Varsity The best offense ever, was the cry of the coaches as the Colts came forth for the 1973 campaign. The Colts walloped West and Sunnyslope before falling in the final minutes of play to a revitalized Marcos De Niza team. The cortesians then proceeded to rip Washingtons Rams, and then moved towards a tough Brophy team, defeating them in the last few minutes, 30-28. Cortez easily cruised by Glendale, and then lost a tough one to St. Marys. Then came Homecoming night, and the Colts defeated the Apollo Hawks, 40-14. A win over Paradise Valley, and a disappointing tie at Moon Valley, put the Colts out of a playoff berth, and they finished the season 7-2-l. A respectable record, but not what we had hoped for. Cortez put eight members on the Skyline Division Team, Tom Bowers, Bernie Herskoveits, Andy Leeper, Mark Liby, George Sellars, john Walton, Kacey Wessel, and BlG DADDY David Wilson. Our lone Republic - Gazette 'All Stater' was voted as most valuable player by the team, and Tom Bowers also made the first team as a running back. To sum it all up, the Colts had many individual standouts, and next season, Coaches Leikvold, Eastin, and Dingman will be back again, working hard to make Cortez the perinneal winner that it is. George Sellars gg pppp T john Walton fires out against Apollo. Leroy QDavid Rauj is captured by Washington Defenders. ' . AI' X I if J W Q, W 4 3 , ' 7 A'k ' Jim .Wy f F Q M J. Third Row: Tim Welch, Kirk fCowboyj Zartman, Kacy Wessel, and Tom Bowers. A new coach brings new philisophies and sometimes new life. Not necessarily so as the 73-74 season dismally started with a string of losses for the Colt Cagers. A lone win in the G. C. C. Christmas Tournament kept them from an open spot in the win column. A new year and a new format as the Colts came charging on to meet new challenges in 1974 with speed, agility, and careful ballhandling. With a big win over quick Paradise Valley the Colts won the next three out of four including a crushing win over the Apollo Hawks at home after a sour first effort at the Apollo gym. A sub- stantial portion of the season is left and the Colts, with their new full court press are hoping for the best with this new style of play. For Coach Turner, and new challenge, for the senior starters Miller, Walton, O'Conner, Zartman, and Bowers another year, and with the full court press work- ing so well Wessel, Houtz, johnson, Fenton, Martinez as well as Welch will see plenty of action. Cortez is proud to have two hard working coaches who in spite of unsurmountable odds keep trying to make the Colt Cagers the best in the state. wi - - -George Sellers Bowers up on a fast break agains Appollo Z handles the ball with finesse Kacey and Greg work on their opponent for a rebound Waldo and Mack Fan Club? WRESTLING 74' Grueling endurance, unmerciful strength, and the quickness of a cat, all earmarks of a outstanding wrestling team. The 73 - 74 Colt grapplers started this year's cam- paign rated a strong 3rd in the state, and romped through the season with a 7 - 3 mark, far short of their goal, but excellent considering their tough competition. Placing high in tournaments was a trait of this year's wrestling team who despite tremendous potential, dropped a few choice matches. With Coach McLean's watchful eye guiding them the wrestlers who start division competition today ought to place high. This year's Seniors, who paced the squad with relentless competitiveness and strong drive for the State Championship included such names as: Zischau, Enriquez, Headly, Knights, Tyo, Kueker, Arndt, and the Cortez champs, Herskovets and McDonald, who always perform admirably. McDonald, going into division this year reeled off forty straight wins, this is out- standing considering the excellent competition in his weight class. Coach McLean, as all coaches will continue his excellent advice to the grapplers next year in his quest for the State Championship. Due to deadlines set by the yearbook company we were unable to cover the division and state championships, but Cortez undoubtahly had competetors in those meets. . . Varsity Baseball Depth, speed, and consistency are earmarks of this year's Cortez nine. With an endless variety of returning lettermen the Colts should produce a fine season, and hopefully win a playoff berth. The Colts returning talent includes such names as: Zartman, Big Daddy David Wilson, G. Sellers, S. Yozwiak, J. Danielson, and the Bowers boys. Along with these names are several new faces who should perform admirably, juniors, Baker, Hicks, Stamas, and hard hitting left fielder, Mike Todd, so the colts have more than enough talent to live up to their preseason fourth in the state ranking. With john Walton as captain of the squad they dropped their first two games to Coronado 2-O and Flag 2-1 but Coach Hyman expects great things from this year's varsity. The one two pitching punch is supplied by Sellers and Welch who both turned in fine performances the first week of the season but lost on costly errors. The Colts have never been too hot early in the season but always come on strong late enough for a fine season. This year's team , states Coach Hyman, is the finest ability wise, player for player, that I have ever had, but games are won on PERFORMANCE not mere ability. Look for the Colts in the playoffs late in May, they'll be there. G. Sellers 135 Keep that foot on the bag Dobh! ! ! .N A .,L .fy 1. PHOENIX, ARIZONA ROBERT E. MARENTES 5024 W. Glendale Ave. Phone 93940400 Glendale, Arizona CLAUDE HAMILTON 973.0701 A Letter From The Editor - After many weeks of work after school, ditching classes, and a few ulcers, I bring this book to a halt. It was a lot of work trying to make the deadlines: and we only missed them by a few days. Looking back I realize it was more fun than Work. Now We're all a year older, and I would actually like to do it all over again. I would like to take this chance to thank all the people who made this book possible. Thanks to Mr. Hutchison for talking me into . this mess, he is not only a fantastic advisor but a great person as Well. My thanks to Mr. Bursell and all the people at Iostonsg for they had to put up with our late deadlines. Thanks goes to Mary McCarthy for her ideas and help, and to Russ Vanasek for doing all the junk I didn't want to do. Dean Selvey and jo Eaton deserve a thank you for the Work on the Senior section and the ambitions. I thank Lisa Christ, Kathy Berger, George Sellars, Doug Miller, Cindy Van Ness, Steve and Dana Fitch, Randy Goodin, Nick Marquez, Kassey Wessel, jamie Ogden and Mrs. Dunn and her typing classes. In closing, it has been lots of fun and I wish each of you the best of luck in the coming years. W7 Ray Kleing Editor 325 Cxegffwi MMCQ gpzpz 'O'4'4L0v2Q,., C fQ'2e25??,Z,j C21 .
