'f'g:z't L ,tr.t. ?a:'.f'.:1 l .dn 'diy' V St l J 69 FOOTBALL 43, fam BILL BRIETZ Fullback Putz played the game rough and rugged and will be greatly missed next year ALBERT BRISTOL Tackle This was Albert s last year also He played the game well because he liked it BEN BUNCH Guard Ben is as rough as they come He was fighting all the tlme and the Tigers will remember it next year BOBBY BUTLER Halfback Bobby played hts position very well VVe are sorry to lose him to the Naval Air Corps I D CHENEY Guard I D was a small boy but he had plenty of drive He played the game hard and liked it I C COLLIER Halfback I C could really carry the mail He never gave up and that is why he will be missed next year LONGVIEW Out weighed but not out played the Tigers opened their football season with a 7 6 win over the Longview Loboes It was a battle to the finish for both sides but the Tigers rose to their heights of fighting glory and sent the East Texas powerhouse reeling under a great ground and aerial attack Corsicana s touchdown came in the first part of the second quarter with the Tigers taking the ball on Longvtews 40 yard line Tinkle made six yards then a pass to Collier netted 27 yards putting the ball on the Loboes 17 yard line Another pass failed and Brietz crashed through for four yards Another pass went awry and Tinkle behind magnificent interference from the left side of the line went over for the tally Brietz converted for the extra pomt Longview moved about considerably in the third ana fourth periods on power house ground plays but never really threatened in this respect It took a sustained aerial offensive sparkled by Iefferles Nelson and Crowley to gain their only score The whole Corslcana lme crushed the attempted conversion ENNIS Corsicana Tigers opened their home-season football game at Tiger Field by defeating the Ennis Lions 13-0. This was the first game for the Lions since limmie Gardner became head coach. He was formerly Corsicana head basketball and assistant football coach. Corsicarias first touchdown came in the second quarter after Mcliie snagged a pass from Collier and ran 38 yards to the Ennis twofyard line, On the next play, McKie circled end for the touchdown. Breitz converted for the extra point. The next touchdown came in the last quarter after the Tigers had carried the ball deep into Lion territory. Mcliie picked iii' the lcall on a fumble and ran through the middle of the bewildered Ennis team. Collier missed in the conversion. MR BLACK It was a hot sultry afternoon 1n the small town of Radeno 1n Indra I had Just gone lnto the tearoom of the hotel rn hopes of fmdrng a DICE cool corner where I mrght rest wrthout berng annoyed by the beggars and flys I had been strollrng the streets all mormng trymg to amuse myself to no avarl Because there were really no 1nterest1ng srghts or people to see why my busrness asso crate had p1cked th1s town of all towns to establrsh h1s f1rm m was beyond my concerpt So whrle s1tt1ng rn the tearoom try1ng to frnd comfort from the heat a tall slender mrddle age gentleman came up to my table and asked 1f he mrght rom me Of course I asked h11'I1 to s1t down because I realrzed that he was rn the frx I was rn no frrends here no busrness connectron and no socral connectrons He rntroduced hrmself as Mr Black I then 1n turn after the proper lntroductron asked hlm where he was from He sard he had no home or famrly I told hlm I was very sorry I had brought up the subJect and gave hrm my deepest regrets He sard that 1t was qu1te all rrght because 1t drdnt matter We 1mmed1ately dropped that sublect and talked about one thmg or another for about f1fteen mlnutes Then somehow I mentloned the natrves supersrtron of the supematural and all that baloney He sa1d that he had heard qu1te an mterestmg story about the supernatural and 1f I was rnterested he would tell when I frrst notrced h1m berng very nervous He then began someth1ng lrke th1s It was I9 IH London England Str Iohnathan Blackwell had Just purchased the old Brrckerham castle whrch had been vacant for some 20 years because of a curse placed on 1t by an old servant who had been persecuted for wltch craft ln the early 1800s The curse would affect the hves of all the people who ever lrved 1n the castle or those who Joked about 1t It was to no avarl to try and destroy 1t because 1t would take vengeance 1n a terrrble fashron Slr Blackwell had been marrred a year and four months He was purchasmg the castle for h1s lovely wrfe who was not a nat1ve Englrsh but an Amerrcan blueblood The castle was remodeled from top to bottom rn the most modem style and by the best desrgner of that t1me The reason for thrs was to do away Wllh anythrng connected wrth the curse It took well over s1x months to remodel the structure because 1t was 1D such a run-down condrtlon After 1t was done over and the Blackwells had moved rn 1t could never have been 1dent1f1ed as the same place People say that Mrs Blackwell s shnll ch1ld lrke laughter that flowed through the halls chased the curse away untrl a b1g festrval ball that the Blackwells gave It all began when Mrs Blackwell s brother came to l1ve W1ll'1 them He was unmarrled and looklng for a WIIS He was a headstrong and very dar1ng young man who was the tall dark and handsome type One of the IIISI thmgs he asked h1s srster about was the curse of Bnckerham Of course she laughed at hrm because she knew nothmg about the curse because her husband had kept lt concealed from her ln hopes of 1t bemg only a tale I me how it happened. Because he just had to tell somebody about it. Then was So she told hrm he must have been lrstenmg to some of the peasant s talk He assured her rt wasn t Just gossrp and that rf rt was some sort of a curse he Wanted to frnd rt The subrect was then dropped untrl the ball that nrght at whrch trme Mr Robert agarn brought rt up wrth hrs boastrng of gorng to frnd the cause of the curse Some of the people who actually knew about the curse warned hrm about not ever speakrng of rt He then sard he was not afrard of anythmg and he would speak of whatever he chose to Mrs Blackwell then came to the ard of her brother and sard rf he wanted to he could tear the castle down look rng for that srlly curse Then they whrrled away rn a fast and darrng dance The ball was one of the lovlrest ever held on thrs occasron Srr Blackwell had spent a great deal of money to have the ballroom decorated for thrs one occa sron The decorcrtrons shrrnmered rn gay delrght as the brrght and colorful lrghts shone upon them The marble floor glrstened as the gay feet glrded over rt The costumes were of the frnest materral by the frnest tarlors The ball was drawrng near rts close when from the terrace came a blood chrllrng cry of agony and then an ever eternal srlence whrch was only broken by the call of a nrght brrd Then the people collectrng therr sense went out rnto the nrght to see Where the cry came from To therr surprrse there lay Mr Robert wrth a horror strrcken look on hrs face The vrllage doctor was there and ex ammed hrm and found no Wounds or srgns of struggle of any sort He was Just dead that was all The mard put Mrs Blackwell to bed because she was rn a slrghtly nervous condrtron Mr Blackwell went rn and told her how sorry he was about the whole thrng But she was rn no mood for cornfortrng words He then retrred for the nrght The house was strll as a mouse untrl the clock struck three then another shrrll cry cut the strllness of the nrght Mr Blackwell ran down the long dark hallway to hrs wrte s bedroom broke down the door and rushed rn To hrs horror he found her slumped rn one corner of the room as rt she had been tryrng to escape somethrng He qurckly looked her over for any wounds or marks of vrolence frndrng nerther She was dead He then tumed and ran out of the house to the garage got a can of gasolrne reentered the house and rn a frt of madness poured rt on the lovely old tapestrres whrch adorned the Walls He then l1t the gasolrne and qurckly the whole room was on frre He fled the place rn a car whrle the frre gutted the castle and the curse he hoped He was never seen agarn Havrng frnrshed hrs story Mr Black got up apologrzed for havrng taken up so much of my trme and took hrs leave I watched hrm go slowly up the starrs untrl he was out of srght Then I too got up and took my leave of the tearoom but I frrst went to the desk to get my key and marl Whrle standrng there wart rng for the clerk to frnd my key two stretcher bearers went upstarrs and then as I started up they came down wrth a body covered wrth a sheet I went back down the steps and asked the clerk who that was He told me rt was a Mr Black who had been yellrng rn hrs room When they got there he was dead but no srgns of any wounds or vrolence had been found I thanked hrm for hrs rnformatron and rn a whrrlpool of thoughts and a dazed look on my face I went up to my room George Grllespre . . . 1 . 1 . . . . - 1 , . . , . . . 1 1 , . . 1 1 ' 1 1 - 1 , . - 1 1 1 EPILOGUE Iosh a1nt you gomg to get up and go down to the church? When experiments are being made with chlorine, bromine, and sulphur, everyone sniffs, turns up his nose, and runs to the window for air. Notwithstanding, much good is derived, and after all, there is a sense of excitement in not knowing whether there is going to be an explosion or whether some sweet smelling substance will be formed.
