THE BOARD OF EDUCATION we IQ' . . . . . . f LS The duty of the Board of Education is to administer the financial f gg Q9 affairs of the Corsicana Independent School District. This includes t l iii directing the city administration to assess and collect such taxes as are 'fi ' necessary for the operation of the school. The board is further authorized it to use such monies as may have been voted by the city in a bond election 'gl for the erection and equipping of the buildings. The election of teachers, QL? the outlining of policies of the school system, the expenditure of money for teachers' salaries and curriculum reorganization all come under the jurisdiction of the board. Corsicana is fortunate in having an efficient 5'1 board, the members of which are very vitally interested in every phase of lr l gif school activity, through the superintendent keeping in close contact with ki individual administrators. HOUSTON CULBERTSON AGNEW QUISENBERRY ROBERTS MOORE WILES FOREIGN LANGUAGES-Soc1AL SCIENCES The Foreign Language Department includes four years' work in Latin and three in Spanish. The aim of the department is the acquisition of a ready personal command of the language studied. The history course covers the story of man from the early traces of life to the present time. Economics covers the general principles of economics and is designed to give the student some insight into the great economic movements of the present day. Civics gives a knowledge of the government of the United States, the rights and obligations of citizen- ship, etc. Page EI

'L 5 we ne ' A public school system was established in Corsicana in 1881: there had 2: -Q been schools here before, but it was not until this time that the city assumed , control of the school system. The first school building constructed here was 35. the Collin Street School which was located where the new high school now 'fl V , stands. All the grades were held in this one structure: J. A. Townsend was 'Wai the first pr ncipal, J. T. Hand the first superintendent: Miss Florence Bright, fl Miss Mattie D. Steele, Miss Sallie Evans, Miss Pope, Miss Davis. Miss Ida ,sr Thompson and Miss Lottie Picton were among the first teachers. Mrs. Sam ' il Kerr, Miss ,Wilma Edwards, Mrs. Claytie Woods, Mrs. Maggie Carter, Mrs. -A., A. S. Knezlle, Mr. Elmer Butler, Mr. Reuben Morrison, Mrs. Allie Moore, aj 2 1 Mrs. Hennie Sanderson, Mr. Emmett Sutherland, Mr. B. B. Bates and Mr. ja Robert Haynes were among the first graduates of the high school. n li l '-fi' - I Six months after the first building was completed the David Crockett 4 . School was built. The first Stephen F. Austin School was constructed next: . -1 Q then the William B. Travis. The next addition was the Sam Houston School '57 t' which was purchased from a Catholic convent: two buildings were included in it J this purchase. The old high school, which is now the Junior High School, lil 5 was the next school building constructed. Eb A-f In 1920, under the superintendency of Mr. J. E. Blair, a bond issue of l 3 8600.000 was passed by the citizens of Corsicana, and as a result four new schools were constructed. The buildings provided for were: Sam Houston School, William B. Travis School, High School, and Ci. W, Jackson School. gas In the last ibond issue of 1925 the money necessary for the erection of the an Robert E. Lee School was voted. This school serves the western part of our will , City. 51 , 'T fi- Since its organization Corsicana High School has had seven superintend- ents, each of whom has done much toward making our high school what it is Q' today. These men are in order of their terms of office: J. T. Hand, Professor Carlyle, Cl:-airles Alexander, J. T. Hand, H. S. Melear, J. W. Cantrell, J. E. Blair, and T. D. Fillers, our present superintendent. at There have been quite a few teachers in the Corsicana school system of b whom we are very proud, since they have taught here a good many years. A 53 few of these are: Miss Sallie Evans, Miss Florence Bright, Miss Mattie D. Steele, Miss Sue McCrery, Miss Tommie Lacy, and Miss Laura Moore. G. W. 37 Jackson, first principal of the colored schools, served almost forty years, and 51575 as an appreciation for his faithful service, G. W. Jackson High School has been QA named for him.
