CORRIAN 1971 CORRY AREA HIGH SCHOOL “HOME OF THE BEAVERS” Corry, Pennsylvania I have broken the bonds of time and space. And my life has flashed before my face. In an instant the light was changed to dark On a new journey I now embark. The past and the present that once were together Are now apart from one another. Mama, it is in order of things That I must leave when my bell rings. I couldn't come back on a wave of tears. Or if you mourned for a hundred years. You need not grieve or have any sorrow For we all must go to our new tomorrow. In our shock we wonder why. But we will never know until we die. It is beyond our simple minds to know Whose destiny is to stay or go. But there's a lesson to be discerned It is our duty to be sure it's learned. We question God, “Does He exist?’’ So many temptations, it’s hard to resist. Is there a Heaven? What is a Hell? We will find out when He tolls our bell. But why is there life if only to die? There must be a new life above the sky. It is nearly time for us to go: so spread Some Love and truth before we're dead. Sam Genco IN MEMORIAM JEAN GREEN March 24. 1952 November 29, 1968 REBECCA KAY MINK APRIL 19, 1953 MAY 17. 1970 WMINISTRATION AND FACULTY t Dedication This book is respectfully dedicated to Mr. J. As you close the high school door after graduation, and later as you close the door at home, you will enter the doorway to a lifetime — a lifetime of reality and problems. How well you and your generation face up to and solve such problems as pollution. drug abuse, lawlessness, and immorality may determine whether or not our great national heritage of freedom and prosperity survives. Yes, you have had free education, free room and board at home, and you now have tremendous opportunities to continue your education and become economically successful. But there is a price tag of hard work and responsibility. What is being said in the news media notwithstanding — the youth of your generation are “burning the midnight oil in college, and they are beginning to help solve the pollution problem (moral pollution, air pollution, drug pollution, etc.). It is from your generation that we will get many of the answers to world problems — and a breath of fresh air. Welcome to the Successful 70’s. Ray E. Elsea Superintendent 8 MESSAGE TO SENIORS: Your high school days are almost over and for many of you formal education is at an end. Many seniors will continue education at the college level, a great number will enter the armed services, others will enroll in vocational and business schools, while an even greater number will find employment suitable to their interests. Whatever you intend to do in the future, you will be planning your own careers, making your own decisions, and taking your place in the outside world. It is my sincere wish that your plans and decisions will be ones to which you have given much thought and careful investigation. May you choose the plan of procedure which will enable you to become the best of citizens in a world which. I hope, can offer you the finest things in life. Russell L. Brant Principal 9 In The Offices Your high school graduation is a time to pause and reflect upon your condition as an individual, as a class, and as a generation. You will note that the accomplishments of preceding generations will have made you the most healthy, most comfortable, most intelligent, and best-looking class ever. Along with these many attributes you will also inherit a world with numerous unsolved problems. Just as previous generations, you. too, will find that the great challenges in your future life will spring from these problems. It is certain that you will not solve all of our problems, but it is just as certain that the world into which your children graduate could be the best ever because of your contribution. LeRoy E. Mrs. Margaret Orcutt Senior Class History The friendships we have made and our experience in our six years together as the Class of 1971 will remain dear to us. We thank our teachers; class advisors, Mr. Plyler, Mr. Bennink and Mrs. Orcutt; and Mike Hartley, our class president for three years. As sophomores, we sold sweatshirts and entered a float, “Little Miss MufFet,” in the annual homecoming. As juniors, we were first with our award-winning float, “The Eagle.” The musical. “Rough and Ready,” met with great success. Our class sold candy bars and magazine subscriptions. We sponsored the Junior Olympics in May and honored the seniors with the banquet and prom. Our class unity will be broken as we make individual post-commencement plans. Looking forward, we will remember that “tomorrow is the first day in the rest of our lives.” Loren Crakcr. Ronald Bailey, Mrs. Orcutt. Barbara Crowell. Gregory Hartley. I was very happy and excited and I tried to imagine what the coming year was going to be like. A little over two months later, on 7 August, I left my family and friends in Whakatane. New Zealand, and looked forward to a big new adventure living in another country, in a different community, with a new family. In the four short months that I have been here, I have been very much impressed by the tremendous people of this beautiful city in this big wonderful country. 1 will take back many memories with me. 1 will never forget the school spirit and the friendliness of the people of CAHS. Nor will I forget the beautiful autumn scenes with whole hillsides covered with a rainbow of color. Pity it had to rain so much, though. 1 will also remember my winter here, especially since Whakatane never gets snow. And I will also remember the shelves and shelves of pet food in the supermarkets. The following words of Sanskrit, which have been adopted as the AFS motto, are well known. Walk together, talk together, O ye people of the earth; Then, ana only then. Shall ye have peace. From my experience here, these words now have a new and much fuller meaning to me, and I hope that I am a good ambassador, not only for my country, but also for the organization which stands behind these words. 1 will never forget my year here in Corry. To me, being an AFS student is a personal experience and I am veiy grateful to all the many people in AFS in the school and community here, and especially to my family for making this year possible. 71 Atholl Law Row I: Jocttc Mokwa. Edwards Key Club is an international service organization for high school leaders. No other school organization does more service for the community than Key Club. It also ranks high among all service organizations around the world. The Club is unique because it is sponsored in cooperation with the school officials by a local Kiwanis Club composed of the leading business and professional men of the community. The main goal of Key Club is the development of initiative, leadership ability, and good citizenship practices. These qualities so vital for a useful and successful life are encouraged as each member accepts responsibilities in the administration and activities of the Club, and by allowing each member to use his own initiative in carryim out the project selected by, or assigned to. him. Leadership and fellowship qualities arc best developed by service programs. The organization of Key Club is divided geographically. The first division is Key Club International which is the worldwide club. It is divided up into districts. Corry Key' Club is located in the Pennsylvania District. The District is divided into divisions. Corry is in Division One. This division includes northwestern Pennsylvania. Our Club has many activities throughout the year. Some are service projects, some are social functions, and others arc fund-raisers for worthy charities. The Key Club is a very important part of a high school and community and its members deserve a great' deal of respect. 114 Student Council Row I: Mike Darnofall. Becky Summerville, Mark Bloom. The climax of a great year came after a victor)' over the MeadviUe Bulldogs to clinch the Section If Crown. The Beavers ended the season with a 4-1 record in the league, and a 6-3 overall. Corry lived up to tradition in winning back to back championships in 1969-1970. This year's fine football team was under the guidance of an entirely new staff of coaches: Rushin. DiFonzo, Gruca. Wilson, aniT DeLong. Under these men, Corry put together another fine season loosing its only game in the league to a strong Warren Team. This year’s team had many fine players as is reflected in their excellent record. The backfield was led by field general John Downey along with other seniors: Mike Darnofall, Dave Crowell, Ron Bailey, Butch Dubrosky, Jim Hanna, and Al Harmon. The offensive line had many senior standouts, including tlue-fingered ends: Daryl Emmons and Mark Bloom, tackles: Mike Roden and like McCray, guards: Bill Ross and Bill Darnofall, center, Phil Knoll. There were also some fine defensive senior standouts as ends: Craig Bailey. Sam Barcssi, and Jim Hamed. The Beavers had a number of players selected to the Section II All Star team: John Downey, Senior offensive back: Bill Darnofall. Senior guard; Dave Crowell, Senior defensive back; Mike Darnofall, Senior offensive back; Daryl Emmons, Senior offensive end; and Paul Goodwill. Junior offensive and defensive tackle. The Beavers are looking forward to the younger group coming along to be contenders for the 1971 title. We extend the best of luck to the underclassmen and the 1971 edition of the Battlin' Beavers. Written into this history are the players that made the season a success. A season that saw a new coach bring an inexperienced varsity team to the best section record the school has ever sported. 7-9. The team, lacking in superstars, but loaded with spirit. gave in excess of 100% effort every game. The bench gave added support to the front line, and aided in all of the victories. For the Beavers and Coach Partch it was an eventful and exciting year. Basketball is now-becoming a spectator sport in Corry, and next year's squad hopes to keep the trend going. With a great assistant coach in Mr. Gruca, and many returning lettermen. the future looks very bright! A basketball dynasty in the making? JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL Row I. Bill Hammond. Terry Brumagin. In several of the eight losing meets, the opposing coach was treated to a dose of nervous indigestion by the Beaver swimmers. None of the Beaver opponents planned on “sure win” when they faced the Beavers. This team suffered also from short practice time and lack of depth on the squad, although several members were outstanding in spite of this. Bright spots in the season were several team records, pool records and individual champions in both Section 2 and District 10 meets. Most memorable moment was the Medley Relay Team getting the ladder out to change the record board at Jamestown immediately after establishing the new pool record.!
